Chapter Text
The temple was quiet.
The kind of quiet that settled deep into the bones, wrapping around the stone walls like an embrace, whispering through the open-air corridors where incense burned low in its dishes. It wasn’t a silence of emptiness, but of something softer, something lived-in.
Namjoon sat beneath the temple’s central archway, where golden light spilled through the latticed windows, painting soft patterns across the stone. He had been up since before dawn, his hands steady as they worked through the morning tasks—relighting the incense, replacing the offerings, sweeping away the night’s dust.
His body ached more than usual.
It wasn’t an unbearable kind of pain. Just… a heaviness. A lingering weight pressing down on his ribs, coiling around his breath like unseen vines. But Namjoon had learned to live with discomfort. He had learned how to push through exhaustion, to tuck away the way his limbs trembled sometimes when he overworked himself.
The temple would always need tending, and he would always do it.
A warm breeze drifted through the hall, carrying the scent of sandalwood and aged parchment. Somewhere in the distance, the temple bell swayed gently in the wind, its chime soft and rhythmic. The sound should have been grounding.
Instead, it felt distant. Like Namjoon was hearing it from far, far away.
He exhaled slowly, pressing the heel of his palm against his chest. His breath stuttered slightly at the motion, catching on something thick in his throat.
Not now.
Not here.
He closed his eyes and swallowed against it, forcing his shoulders to relax, willing the tightness in his lungs to ease.
He was just tired.
It would pass.
"You're up early."
Namjoon startled at the voice, blinking up to see Yoongi leaning against the doorway, his arms crossed loosely over his chest. His dark robes hung loosely around his frame, his hair still tousled from sleep.
Namjoon offered a small smile. "So are you."
Yoongi snorted. "Someone took my pillow."
Namjoon huffed a quiet laugh. He could guess exactly who. "Jimin?"
"Jimin," Yoongi confirmed, shaking his head fondly. "I didn’t have the heart to wake him up."
Namjoon hummed, setting his broom aside. "You didn’t have the heart, or you didn’t want to deal with his whining?"
Yoongi smirked, pushing off the doorway to come sit beside him. "A little of both."
They fell into a comfortable silence after that, listening to the wind, to the faint sounds of movement within the temple as the others stirred awake.
Namjoon sighed and leaned back against the stone pillar behind him, tilting his head up toward the open ceiling. "I think the storm god was angrier than usual," he murmured.
Yoongi hummed, following Namjoon's gaze toward the sky. "Seokjin handled it."
Namjoon didn’t miss the way Yoongi’s fingers flexed slightly against his knee. He didn’t push. He just nodded, exhaling softly. "I know."
Another pause.
"You still feel sick."
It wasn’t a question.
Namjoon turned his head slightly, meeting Yoongi’s gaze. There was no accusation there—just quiet observation.
Namjoon hesitated, fingers curling against the fabric of his robes. "I’m fine."
Yoongi’s gaze didn’t waver.
Namjoon knew that look. Knew that Yoongi wasn’t fooled.
But Yoongi only sighed, reaching over to squeeze Namjoon’s knee briefly before standing. "Come back to bed," he said, voice softer now. "Otherwise you know how pouty Jungkook gets."
Namjoon exhaled, pushing himself up to follow. "We can't have that."
Yoongi hummed in agreement, but his eyes lingered on Namjoon a beat longer than necessary before turning away.

The day passed in a slow, easy rhythm.
Taehyung and Hoseok had returned the night before, and though they were home, their gazes were heavier, their shoulders tense in a way that hadn’t yet faded. The summons had been particularly cruel this time—Namjoon could see it in the way Taehyung’s hands trembled slightly when he thought no one was looking.
Still, they carried on as they always did.
Hoseok helped Namjoon mend a tear in one of the temple banners, his fingers deft as they threaded the needle through the silk. Jimin took it upon himself to tease Jungkook through his chores, which led to the youngest chasing him through the halls, their laughter echoing through the corridors. Seokjin prepared a meal for all of them, side-eyeing Namjoon every time he paused between bites as if willing him to eat more.
It was peaceful.
It was warm.
And for a moment, Namjoon let himself believe that everything was fine.
Until his body betrayed him.
It happened quickly.
Too quickly.
One moment, he was standing in the temple courtyard, watching Jungkook wrestle Taehyung into the dirt with a triumphant grin. The next, a sharp, suffocating pain speared through his lungs, ripping a sound from his throat that wasn’t quite a gasp, wasn’t quite a choke—just raw, jagged agony.
The first cough tore through him like a blade.
His vision blurred. His knees buckled.
Someone shouted his name—Jimin, maybe, or Hoseok—but he barely heard them through the roaring in his ears.
His body convulsed as another cough wrenched itself from his throat.
And then, something fell past his lips.
Something warm. Something soft. Something wrong.
It landed in his palm with a sickening finality.
A single petal.
Deep, dark red. Drenched in blood.
The world around him went silent.
The air turned thick, heavy with something unspeakable.
Namjoon’s breath came in sharp, uneven gasps as he stared down at the delicate horror in his hand. The blood soaked into the lines of his palm, painting grotesque patterns against his skin. His fingers trembled. His heart pounded.
It wasn’t possible.
It wasn’t—
Another cough racked through him, knocking the air from his lungs. His body lurched forward, and this time, he couldn’t stop it.
Another petal.
Then another.
They tumbled from his lips, curling like dying embers against the stone floor, their edges soaked in crimson.
Someone caught him before he collapsed completely, strong arms wrapping around his shaking frame. Jungkook, his voice frantic in Namjoon’s ear.
“Joonie— what— ”
Seokjin was already kneeling beside him, hands cradling Namjoon’s face, thumbs swiping away the blood smeared at the corner of his lips. His expression was carefully composed, but his hands trembled.
Yoongi was pale. Hoseok’s breath hitched. Taehyung had gone rigid, his wide eyes locked onto the petals scattered on the ground.
Jimin… Jimin looked stricken.
Namjoon swallowed, forcing his throat to work past the burn. He tried to speak, tried to force some semblance of reassurance past his bloodied lips—
But the look in their eyes told him they already knew that this was no ordinary sickness.
The temple was impossibly still. Not with the quiet of peace or reverence, but with something heavier—thick and suffocating, pressing against their lungs like an unseen weight. The scattered petals on the stone floor glistened wet with blood, their deep red edges curling as if wilting before their eyes.
Namjoon’s breath came in shallow gasps, his chest rising and falling unevenly as he slumped against Jungkook’s hold. Jin’s hands were steady as they framed Namjoon’s face, but his grip was just a little too tight, fingertips pressing into Namjoon’s jaw as if he could anchor him—keep him from slipping away. He wiped at the blood smeared along the corner of Namjoon’s lips, his touch careful, reverent, almost desperate, like he could undo what had just happened if he only tried hard enough.
“What—” Jin’s voice faltered before he swallowed hard and tried again. “What is this?”
No one answered.
Yoongi’s fingers curled into the fabric of his robes, knuckles white. His voice was hoarse when he finally spoke, like the words burned on the way out. “It’s Hanahaki.”
A curse of unrequited devotion. A disease born from love that was never returned.
“But it shouldn’t be.”
His words rang through the temple like a struck bell, echoing in the heavy silence.
Hanahaki didn’t grow where love was returned. It shouldn’t be happening to Namjoon.
Jimin flinched like the words had struck him. His lips parted, but no sound came out, his gaze darting frantically between Namjoon’s pale face and the bloodstained petals. Taehyung was still frozen, his eyes impossibly wide, his breath coming too fast. Hobi had his hands braced against his thighs, fingers flexing as if fighting the urge to reach out—to fix something he didn’t understand.
Jungkook’s grip on Namjoon tightened. “That’s not possible,” he said sharply, voice laced with something close to panic. “We—” He shook his head, like he was trying to make sense of something inherently senseless. “We all love him.”
Namjoon exhaled shakily.
“Maybe it’s—” His voice cracked. He swallowed, tried again. “Maybe it’s not—”
“Don’t.” Yoongi cut in, sharp, pained.
Namjoon looked at him.
Yoongi’s jaw was tight, his gaze unreadable, but his hands were trembling where they rested against his knees.
“Don’t tell us it’s nothing,” Yoongi said, quieter this time. “Don’t tell us you’re fine.”
Namjoon didn’t.
Because they all knew he wasn’t.
A petal, still stained with blood, lay at Jimin’s feet.
He bent down, hesitated, then picked it up with careful fingers.
It was small in his palm. Fragile. A twisted, wretched thing, soaked in something that should have never touched its soft edges.
Slowly, Jimin looked up. His voice wavered when he spoke. “The petals…” His throat bobbed. “They’re all different.”
Silence.
Namjoon felt it again—the ice creeping through his veins, the weight sinking deeper.
The others turned their gazes back to the floor.
To the petals scattered around them.
To the colors.
Not just deep red. Not just one bloom.
But many.
Magnolia.
Night-blooming cereus.
Marigold.
Lotus.
Wisteria.
Flame azalea.
Each one distinct.
Each one belonging to one of them.
Jin sucked in a breath, his lips parting as if to speak, but no words came.
Yoongi’s hands curled into fists against his knees.
Hobi’s hand slipped from his mouth, his shoulders heaving like he was trying to steady himself.
Jungkook’s grip on Namjoon tightened, fingers digging in like an anchor.
Jimin clenched his fingers around the petal, his knuckles paling.
And Taehyung—
Taehyung took a slow step back.
The smallest movement. Barely noticeable.
But Namjoon noticed.
It hit him like another blade to the chest.
His breath stuttered, another tremor wracking through him as understanding finally settled like lead in his stomach.
This wasn’t their tragedy.
It was his.
Because he was the one loved.
Because he was the one adored, worshipped, wanted.
And it was killing him.
It shouldn’t be happening at all.
Namjoon exhaled slowly, his breath shaky. He wanted to tell them it was okay, that they didn’t need to look at him like that, like he was already slipping through their fingers. But when he opened his mouth, the taste of iron coated his tongue, thick and bitter, and he barely had time to turn his head before another sharp cough wracked his body.
Jin caught him, his palm pressing against Namjoon’s back as his shoulders curled inward. Namjoon clenched his jaw, trying to fight it, trying to keep the wretched thing inside, but it was useless. The next petal came with a fresh splatter of blood, landing against the temple floor with a quiet, damning sound.
A sound that shattered something in all of them.
Yoongi swore under his breath, a rare thing, and immediately pushed forward, his hands hovering over Namjoon’s arm like he wanted to grab him but wasn’t sure how. “We need to figure this out now.” His voice was tight, controlled only by force of will. “Something’s wrong. This isn’t—” His throat bobbed, his expression darkening. “This isn’t how it’s supposed to be.”
Jimin’s breath hitched. “We should get him inside,” he said, voice barely above a whisper. “Make him comfortable.”
Jungkook turned to him sharply. “Comfortable?” Disbelief flickered across his face before it twisted into something wounded, something desperate. “No. We need to fix it. We can’t just—” His voice cracked, and he swallowed hard, his fingers gripping Namjoon’s wrist like an anchor. “We can’t just wait for it to get worse.”
Namjoon, exhausted and aching, squeezed Jungkook’s hand. His fingers were unsteady, but his touch was warm. “I’m not dying yet,” he murmured, his attempt at reassurance only making Jungkook’s grip tighten further.
The silence that followed was thick, heavy with the weight of everything unsaid.
Then, finally, Taehyung moved. He stepped forward, his golden threads of divinity still flickering dimly around him, his presence usually so radiant now subdued. He crouched beside Namjoon, his brows furrowed in frustration, in fear, in something deeper. “There has to be an explanation,” he said firmly, his voice unwavering even as his fingers trembled when they reached out to brush against Namjoon’s wrist.
Hobi nodded, his jaw clenched. “The gods know something,” he muttered. “They have to.”
Jin exchanged a look with Yoongi. “Then we ask,” he said, voice steady with resolve. “And if they don’t give us an answer, we demand one.”
Yoongi met his gaze, something sharp flickering behind his eyes. He nodded once. “Agreed.”
Namjoon wanted to protest, wanted to tell them not to go against the gods for his sake. But when he looked at them—at the set of Jin’s shoulders, the fire in Yoongi’s eyes, the way Jungkook refused to let go of him, the worry written across Jimin, Taehyung, and Hobi’s faces—he knew there would be no stopping them.
And in truth, he didn’t want them to stop.
Not when the weight in his chest still pressed down like a vice.
Not when another petal, trembling and bloodied, fell from his lips.
