When Holmes and I retired to Sussex, it came as a surprise to me. I had urged him to rest for years, but he had always found some reason or other to put me off, and I could hardly deny the man the joy of his work. I had been injured during our final case, but I couldn’t imagine this to be the reason for our retirement. After all, Holmes and I had been injured many times in the course of our career.
