Sometimes he told Gordon he loved him with a careful smile and glancing touch when he needed him to cooperate, when he was being difficult. This almost always resulted in greater hostility but it succeeded in putting him on the back foot. It made it harder to ignore the emotions being manipulated, the raw, honest ones thrumming under every interaction they had.
After all, however much suspicion Gordon had about the motivation behind everything he said and did, he knew deep down he wasn’t lying. That’s what made it so destabilising.
