The Space Between Moments

Summary:

Part of you was dimly aware that the party was still in full swing back on the shore. But the rest of you couldn't have cared less, there may as well have never been a party at all.

AKA: You go to a crappy party and Jotaro asks you to ditch with him. Things get steamy in the ocean.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

The party was hosted by a friend of a friend. It wasn’t really your thing. Music thumped through the small beach house and there was more beer around than there was food. Your friend, and the only person you knew at the party had abandoned you long ago to make cocktails in the kitchen. The blender had been running all night and it was only contributing to the growing headache you were nursing.

The wall next to the door that led out onto the deck had become your only solace. The doorframe wasn’t air tight so a cool breeze would occasionally pass through and give you some relief from the body heat of 30-something college students. Maybe if you went out more this sort of thing wouldn’t be so foreign to you. Sighing, you took a sip from your drink. You’d found an almost empty carton of orange juice in the fridge and hadn’t even bothered pouring it into a cup, the weight of the carton in your hand had been keeping you grounded for the past hour or so.

The music changed from something loud to something louder and you slumped even further against the wall. Maybe giving in and heading out onto the deck wasn’t such a bad idea after all. You’d tried staying inside to convince yourself to socialise, but it hadn’t been working. There was a loud crunch when your friend put too much ice in the blender, you could see her laughing with one arm wrapped around a girl you didn’t know. She’d be fine without you, you decided and slid the glass door open. the sounds of the party faded as you stepped out and closed it behind you.

Someone was already out there. He was sitting on the deck, feet planted firmly on the step below him, hands resting on his knees. You could see a cigarette dangling from his lips. You would have assumed he was just taking a smoke break, but it looked like he’d been outside for awhile.

“Hey.” You said, and he turned to look at you. His face was familiar, he shared a class or two with the host of the party. But nothing in common with you, “mind if I sit?”

He turned away, “S’fine.”

You put your juice down on the discoloured wood and sat beside him, crossing one leg under yourself. The cool ocean air was just what you needed. Closing your eyes, you let the smell of salt take you. You could still hear the music drifting out through the door, but it wasn't so annoying now that it was just background noise. Socialising had never been one of your strengths, you always find yourself sitting outside at parties.

“JoJo, right?” You said, peering at the stranger with one eye, trying to remember what the host of the party introduced him as. You really hadn't been paying attention at the time.

“Jotaro.” He corrected, taking another drag, “but JoJo is fine.”

“You’re friends with what’s-her-name, aren’t you?”

“Hana?”

“That’s it.”

“No.” He paused for a moment before realising he should probably clarify “I mean. We take marine biology together.”

“But you aren’t friends?”

“No.”

You nodded, but otherwise had nothing to say. If Jotaro was anything like you, he’d probably come outside for some peace and quiet, you weren't planning to take that away from him. Sighing, you leant back on your elbows and let your eyes fall closed again. The thumping music from inside has quieted a little, so you could hear the ocean crashing against the sand, and if you focused, you could hear Jotaro’s even breathing. That was it though, and that was nice. You’d never been a fan of loud music, or loud people.

“Sorry about the smoke,” Jotaro said, prompting you to open your eyes again. He ran a hand through his unruly hair, “I’m trying to quit but it isn’t taking.”

“Don’t worry about it.” you replied, sitting up and hugging your knees, “You want a drink?”

He chuckled, “trying to quit that too.”

You grabbed the carton of juice and passed it to him, “I didn’t mean beer, I have orange juice. Want some?”

He didn’t say anything, just took it from you and unscrewed the cap. His fingers brushed yours and it made you feel woozy. That was weird, but you supposed that you'd been out of the dating game long enough that even the smallest physical contact made your palms sweat. There wasn't too much juice left in the carton, but Jotaro at least had the decency to leave a little for you. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and passed the carton back.

“So.” You begin, taking the juice back and finishing the final sip, “did you move here for college?”

Jotaro nodded and you laughed.

“That’s a bummer. I was hoping college would get me out of this dump, but my grades were so bad that nowhere else would take me. I’m stuck here for another two years.”

“I wanted to come here.”

You turned to look at him. His mouth was a firm line and his eyes were hard, “Why?”

“I uh...” he paused, taking a moment to look up at the stars, “I thought the small town would be a nice change of pace”

You sidled a little closer to him, shoulders almost touching, “wish I was moving at your pace. This place is killing me.”

“No you don’t.”

That response was like a loaded gun. You didn’t feel like pulling the trigger.

“I won’t ask.”

He hung his head, “Thanks.”

You weren’t sure why, but the lingering heat from a summer day mixed with the cool ocean breeze was making you bold. You rested your head on Jotaro’s shoulder, because it felt right. You felt him tense up for a moment, but he eventually relaxed. Not moving to return the gesture, but letting you keep leaning on him all the same.

“Are you enjoying the party?” You asked, mostly in jest.

“No” He huffed, bringing the cigarette back up to his lips, “but I like being near the ocean.”

“Me too.” You said, looking past the trees to where the water lay, slowly lapping at the sand, “I think that’s the only thing I'll miss when I eventually move away.”

Jotaro turned to look at you, his eyes like the ocean itself. You couldn't look away, it was like you were caught in a rip.

“Do you want to go?” He asked, softly. Voice barely a whisper.

You met his gaze, unable to match his intensity, “what, like ditch the party?”

He nodded.

Looking back through the glass door, you could see everyone else inside. They were dancing and laughing, the music was still way too loud. It wasn’t like they would miss the two of you anyway.

“Yeah.” You said, “let’s go.”

He grabbed your hand and started tugging you to the tree line. His hand engulfed yours, warm and firm. It was hard to keep up with him, he walked a lot faster than you did. Clearly he’d been wanting to leave that party for awhile now. You’d just been the final push he needed. Pine needles crunched underfoot as you walked, almost jogged behind Jotaro, deep down you knew leaving a party with someone you’d known less than an hour wasn't a good idea. But that was deep down, and you were stuck on shallower things. Like the smell of the ocean, the rush of adrenaline, the punch of Jotaro’s cologne and the way the salty air further tangled his already unruly hair.

Jotaro didn't let your hand go until you reached the sand and that was only because he needed both hands to pull his shoes off. They were nice shoes, shiny, suspiciously expensive for someone living in a place like this. You didn't mention it though. All you did was borrow his shoulder for balance as you pulled your shoes off too, chucking them into a pile with his. The sand was warm and familiar between your toes. Jotaro shot you a look that might have been a smile, and you felt it from your chest all the way out to your fingers.

“Come on.” He said, heading towards the water, tugging off his denim jacket and dropping it onto the sand. You followed. Untying the flannel shirt you had wrapped around your waist and letting it fall. Jotaro hadn't stopped walking, and was pulling his shirt up over his head. In the darkness, you could barely see the outline of his form, the light of the moon the only thing keeping him visible. It was like he belonged out here. With shaky hands, you found yourself taking your shirt off too. By the time you were done, Jotaro was already knee deep in the water. Jeans abandoned just before the waterline.

“Jotaro-” you started, the ocean air making you shiver, you crossed your arms over your chest.

“Are you coming or what?”

You were. Of course you were. Unbuttoning your jeans and kicking them off, caring little about getting them covered in sand, you followed Jotaro into the ocean. The cool water lapping against your calves as you walked in. When you reached him, Jotaro held his hand out again, and you took it without question, letting him tug you further out.

Part of you was dimly aware that the party was still in full swing back on the shore. But the rest of you couldn't have cared less, there may as well have never been a party at all. There was a full moon high against the sky and the water was so calm that it reflected perfectly on its surface. When you were younger, you dreamt that you could follow the path of the moonbeam all the way up into the night. That had never felt more real than this moment. The world around you felt loose and liminal, like you were swimming in it. Time was slippery, if you tried to grab it out here it would just slip through your fingers. The fingers Jotaro still had a firm grip on. He was not slippery, he was real and solid and heavy.

He looked back at you and it felt like he had his hand clutched around your heart. When the water was deep enough Jotaro heaved a breath and dove under the surface, his grip on your hand tugging you down with him. The salty water stung your eyes, but you wanted them open. His hair didn't look like such a mess down here, untangling and flowing without gravity. And now that you were in it, you could see just how well the ocean matched his eyes. Reaching out tentatively, you ran one finger across his cheekbone before cupping his face in your hand. He didn't react. He was just blinking at you slowly. You were surprised that your heartbeat wasn't making the ocean ripple. It felt strong enough.

When you rose for air, because despite how little you wanted to, you still needed air. Jotaro floated a little closer. His brow creased like he was thinking hard about something before he slowly pushed your wet hair out of your face. You blinked at him, unable to ignore the droplets of water crawling down the bridge of his nose. You’d never been any good at prose, so the only word that came to mind was beautiful. He was close to you now, so close that you could feel his breathing. Before you had a chance to ask him to, or if he wanted to - he was already kissing you. Like he’d read your mind.

His lips were soft, and while he tasted mostly like saltwater there was still a kick of smoke at the back of your throat. One of your arms wrapped around his head and you dug your fingers into his hair. The salt made it hard to run your fingers though, but you managed. His arms locked around your waist and tugged you up against his chest, his skin felt so good against yours. The water was shallow enough that you could still touch the sand with the tips of your toes, Jotaro was still able to stand flat footed without his head dipping below the water. You slung your other arm around his shoulders and opened your mouth beneath his, he accepted your invitation gladly. His tongue tracing your upper teeth.

Your heart felt hot and heavy in your chest, and all you wanted was to be closer to him. So you pushed yourself up from the ground and hooked your thighs around his waist. To his credit, he only wobbled a little. You felt more than heard the growl that rumbled through his chest as his arms closed tighter around you and his tongue grew only more insistent. The smell of salt in the air was thick and overpowering, but pulling away from Jotaro’s mouth and burying your face in his shoulder, all you could smell was him. His breath stuttered when you pressed your lips at the join between his neck and shoulder, and one of his hands moved down from your waist to cup your ass.

“Hey.” Jotaro breathed, his voice raspy.

“Hey.” you replied, meeting his eyes. You were a little taller than him like this and looking down at him felt so intimate . His expression was soft, softer than you had expected. It felt like time was waiting for the two of you back on the shore. Like you were trapped in the empty space between two moments. You let your head loll back so you could look at the sky, the stars dotting the blanket of the night were dancing in the water around you and when you looked back down. You saw them dancing in Jotaro’s eyes too.

“What-” He started, trying to look everywhere but at you, “what do you want-”

“Jotaro.” You said, stopping him dead in his tracks.

He stared up at you, blinking slowly as you brought your hands around to cup his face.

“All of it. I want all of it.”

His mouth was against yours again, tongue tangling with yours as his second hand joined the one already on your ass, hitching you a little further up his torso. You moaned, hands exploring the expanse of his shoulders. His muscles tensed under your touch and he pulled his lips from yours to kiss his way down your neck. It might as well have been forever since someone touched you like this, Jotaro’s kisses burned as he made his way down the column of your throat to your collarbone. He stopped there for a moment, sucking gently on the exposed skin.

“Take your bra off.” He breathed against you, tightening his grip on your ass, “my hands are full.”

That made you laugh, “Sure.”

Leaning forward so you didn’t topple the two of you backwards, you reached around and unclasped the garment. It was a solid colour, boring affair, which was probably good considering you then tossed it into the maw of the ocean, never to be seen again. Maybe it would wash up on a beach somewhere, it really didn't matter to you. Especially not when Jotaro was looking at you like that . His mouth found your breast, and he kissed you there, slowly and softly. His breath was warm against your skin and it made you shiver, when he placed a gentle kiss on the edge of your nipple you felt your breath stutter in your throat.

“You taste like the ocean” He whispered, pulling your nipple into his mouth and sucking gently. Your grip on his shoulders tightened and you let your cheek rest on the crown of his head. His tongue was hot, wet and very warm. You could feel him growing bolder, more desperate, going so far as to nip at your skin with his teeth. You gasped, your heart racing behind your ribs. It felt like the world was tilted on its axis, like the stars above you were spinning. Jotaro pulled away from you, looking up to meet your eyes again. He was so damn beautiful. Any words you might have wanted to say were caught in your throat. All you could do was kiss his forehead and hope he knew what that meant.

He smiled. Barely. A quirk of his lips that you wouldn't have noticed if you weren't so close to him. You smiled too, but you smiled wider.

“Do you want to-”

Jotaro kissed you firmly, “Please. Can you move down?”

You nodded, letting yourself slide down his body until your legs were clasped around his hips. Wrapping your arms tight around him, “You can let go, I'll hold on.”

He did. Pulling his hands away, the water was the only thing keeping you up. You could feel his hands fumbling around between the two of you, freeing himself from his underwear and then pushing your panties to the side as best he could. The saltwater had made the fabric shrink a little, but he managed. Moving his hands to your thighs, you could feel the rough pads of his digits digging into your flesh. His arms were shaking.

“Ready?” He asked.

“More than ready.”

Then he lowered you onto his cock, gently. Your breath caught in your throat at the feeling, it had been so long and it felt so good. Jotaro’s eyes fell shut and he groaned as he moved you further down, your grip tightened around his shoulders. When he finally bottomed out inside you, the moan that fell from your lips was downright obscene. You were so full and he was so big

“You good?” He asked and you nodded.

Then he started to move. Being in the water meant neither of you needed to worry about things like gravity, Jotaro’s gentle grip on your thighs was enough to lift you up from his cock and slam you back down again. You were floating. Another moan escaped and you buried your face in his shoulder.

“Fuck” he muttered, thrusting inside you again, “you’re so warm.”

It might have just been because you hadn't had sex in years. But you were pretty sure Jotaro was the best fuck you’d ever had. He filled you in ways you couldn't remember being filled, his staccato breathing in your ear made your heart race. The ocean was cold, but leaning against his shoulder felt like you might as well be laying in the sun. You needed more. Hooking your elbow around the back of his neck, you squished your other arm down between the two of you. Reaching out to circle your clit, you accidently bumped his cock as he pulled out and he hissed in your ear.

“Sorry.”

He laughed, pausing inside you, “It’s fine. I would have done that for you but-”

You kissed him, “your hands are full, i get it.”

This time, your fingers met their mark. You clit was swollen and sensitive from all the buildup, so even your first gentle touches had you groaning. Jotaro was being a little rougher with you now,  thrusting harder and deeper than before. Your breath caught as your fingers picked up the pace, trying to match the speed Jotaro was setting, looking up at him, you saw his cheeks were pink and his lower lip was clamped between his teeth. You were pressed so tightly up against him that you could feel the muscles in his abdomen working as he pounded you. The beginnings of an orgasm were building inside you, the muscles in the base of your stomach were tightening, you were breathing faster and faster. Everything felt so good

“Jesus Christ . Jotaro… I don't.” You moaned, “i don't know how much longer i-”

He growled into your ear and you felt his movements becoming sloppy, like he was having trouble keeping a rhythm, “Me either.”

He looked up at you, those beautiful eyes meeting yours and crashed his lips into yours. His tongue was like molten lava in your mouth, there was no delicacy anymore. The kiss was a mess of teeth and tongue and desire. You pressed your fingers harder against your clit and groaned into his mouth, your insides twitching and begging for release.

“M’gonna” Jotaro groaned, “inside okay?”

Please .”

Then he fucked you, hard and fast. His breath was coming out in bursts and you couldn't hold your upper body up anymore. As you leaned back, his lips wrapped around one of your nipples and you cried out. Your orgasm hit you at that moment, your head lolling back, watching the stars spinning in circles above you. Jotaro’s hips stuttered and you felt his orgasm follow yours.

The few moments afterwards were weird. Jotaro pulled yourself from you, and you made no effort to stand back up. Letting him go, you floated on your back, staring up at the sky. Still riding on the coattails of your orgasm, you were lethargic and tired. Content to watch the stars and let the waves rock you back and forth. Then, you felt a hand grab yours, and turned to see Jotaro had joined you, floating on his back too. He looked calm, his mouth curled in a gentle smile as he looked upwards, the light of the moon dancing in the water droplets caught on his skin.

“I like it here.” Jotaro whispered

“What?” You laughed, “In the ocean?”

“I meant the town. But sure.” He sighed, “We’ll need to head back soon.”

You squeezed his hand, “Probably.”

He was right. Time waited for no-one. Looking past Jotaro, you could just barely see the lights from inside the beach house through the trees. It was weird remembering just how close you really were to the rest of the world. You’d felt so disconnected. Driving your friend to the party felt like a distant memory, you would have forgotten all about it if not for Jotaro’s reminder. She was probably getting ready to head home. Sighing, you let Jotaro’s hand go and stood up. Your legs were wobbly and your fingers were pruny.

“Ready?” You asked

Jotaro maneuvered himself back onto his feet and nodded, following your lead and heading back to shore. The walk back didn't feel as long as the walk there. Time wasn't so gelatinous, the world had started spinning again and you’d realised that you hadn't even been out all that deep. Jotaro was back on the sand and trying to wriggle his way back into his jeans before you knew it. Not an easy task you soon learned, the salt from the ocean stuck to you like a second skin and made putting the clothes back on a lot less romantic than taking them off.

“HEY!” a voice called from the tree-line, startling you. Jotaro was halfway into his shirt and you still only had one leg in your jeans.

Squinting a little, you could see your friend leaning against a pine with her arms crossed.

“If you socialites are done with your skinny dip-” she teetered a little, grabbing a branch for balance, “M’like eight cocktails deep and you’re meant to be my des- ugh my designa-” she groaned, “my desigated driver.”

Now that was a good dose of reality, you sighed, “Yeah, i know. Just wait on the porch, I'll be there in a sec.”

“Mmmmm, yeah. I’ll wait.” She slurred, “Your tits’re out.”

“I'm aware.”

She gave you a thumbs up and almost went to leave, turning back at the last moment, “Hey, Jojo from marine biology! Thanks for keeping this loser company.”

Jotaro nodded seriously and you watched your friend disappear into the trees. With a sudden urgency, you jammed your second leg into your jeans and headed further up the shore to find the rest of your clothes. You shoved your shirt on over your head and gave your sandy flannel a shake before tying it back around your waist.

“Hey, uh. Sorry for bailing like this but I’ve gotta make sure she gets home okay.”

“It’s okay, um-” Jotaro swiped his denim jacket from the ground and dug through the pockets for a second, “gimme your hand.”

You were confused, but did as he asked. Watching as he pulled the cap of a sharpie off with his teeth and inked a phone number onto the back of your hand. You smiled, you couldn't help it.

“Call me.”

You nodded, slipping your shoes back on and kissing him one last time.

“I will.”
