Work Text:

It was a quiet night in Kashiku forest, silent save for the faint chirping of grasshoppers. It was this forest that was the sight of the Monoma family camping trip. While the adults in the family were fast asleep in one of the tents, the only child wasn't as lucky.

Neito laid on his sleeping bag, staring at the ceiling of his tent, and cursing his sudden inability to sleep. 'I can't believe mother and father decided that we were to go camping this year!'  he complained, rolling over in an attempt to get comfortable.

'These woods are so boring, I wish something would happen!'

After laying in his tent for almost an hour trying and failing to fall asleep, Neito decided to get up and go for a walk to try to shake his insomnia.
He crept over to the door of his tent, trying to keep quiet as to not rouse his parents sleeping in the other tent. He crawled out of the tent slowly, tugged on his shoes, and set out in a random direction.

'Well, it seems this walk is helping me fall asleep.'  Neito thought, his eyes drooping slightly. 'I should probably start heading back now.'

Neito turned around and started to head back, but stopped when he heard rustling followed by a wet coughing sound. Neito turned towards the sound and saw a small clearing in the woods. He crept forward, trying to be stealthy. He came into the clearing, and what he saw took his breath away.

In the middle of the clearing, leaning against a tree, was All Might.

Neito's eyes widened, and he quickly ran up to the Number 1 Hero, but slowed down as he got closer. Something was terribly wrong. He noticed that All Might was slumped over, the tree supporting most of the hero's weight, and that the hero was clutching at the side of his stomach, blood dripping from his hand onto the ground.

"All Might?" Neito whispered, not quite believing what was on front of him.

All Might turned his head towards him, his face pale and gaunt. "Hello young man, what has brought you to these woods?"

"My parents and I are camping over that way." Neito says, pointing in the direction of his camp. "What happened to you?"

All Might pushed off of the tree, and sat down against the tree. "What is your name, young man?"

Neito sat across from him. "My name is Neito Monoma."

All Might smiled, seemingly pleased with this knowledge. "I was fighting a villain, Young Neito, a villain so dangerous and secretive that the world has never heard of him, and likely never will. I thought I had managed to win, but with his last move he transported me here." All Might recounted, weakly coughing up blood. "Tell me, Young Neito, do you wish to be a hero?"

Neito nodded, not quite trusting himself to speak at the moment.

"Young Neito, I am sorry I must ask this of you, but our world needs a Symbol. They need someone to rally behind, someone to keep them safe and give them hope. Someone to say "You're safe now, because I am here!" All Might proclaimed weakly, the hole in his side flaring in pain.

"I believe you could be the next to become that Symbol."

Tears started to run down Neito's face, which would be surprising in any other circumstance. "But that's you!" Neito shouted at him. "You're the Number One Hero, you're the world's Symbol of peace!"

All Might grimaced. "You have no idea how much I wish I could continue to be the world's Symbol of Peace, but I'm afraid to say that I have fought my last battle. That fight took too much out of me, and I would be lucky to make it to a city in this state, much less a hospital. I'm dying, Young Neito, but before I do, I have to give you something. I must ask you to take my Quirk."

Neito couldn't believe what he was hearing. All Might, the strongest Hero in the world, was dying in front of him.

"Y-you want to g-give me your Quirk? H-how?" Neito stuttered, barely able to get the words out.

"My Quirk is called One For All, it is a sacred torch that is passed from holder to holder, building power with each person that holds it. If I do not pass it on to you, it will die along with me. So I beg you, Young Neito, take my Quirk, and keep the torch burning!" All Might pleaded, his strength fading quickly.

"I guess I don't really have a choice do I?" Neito asked rhetorically.

"I accept, All Might."

All Might smiled sadly, "I am sorry I have to burden you with this responsibility, but I can't allow One For All to end with me, now..." All Might reached up and tugged out a single strand of his blonde hair, a strand unfortunately stained with his own blood, and handed it to Neito.

"Eat this, Young Neito."

Neito grabbed the strand. He opened his mouth to ask why, but was cut off by All Might slumping back with a wet cough, blood pouring out of his mouth. Neito quickly stuffed the strand of hair in his mouth, swallowing painfully.

All Might smiled weakly, and reached into a small slot on his belt, pulling out a small card.

"I have one more thing for you, Young Neito. I want you to go to my agency, and I want you to ask for Sir Nighteye. I want you to tell him what happened, and I want you to tell him that you're my Successor. I want him to train you to use One For All. If he refuses to see you, show him that card."

"O-ok." Neito said weakly.

"Thank you, Young Neito. I wish I could have trained you, and I think you'll become an even greater hero than me someday." All Might said, weakly smiling at Neito.

"Now go forth, Young Neito, and show the world the hero you can be!"

"O-ok All Might, I'll do that. I p-promise." Neito swore.

"Good." All Might said with a smile, his eyes growing heavier.

"I'll see you soon, Master." All Might whispered, his eyes finally shutting.

Neito watched All Might for what felt like an eternity, and when All Might's chest stopped moving, he turned and walked away from the clearing.

That night Neito Monoma went camping in the Kashiku forest.

That night All Might fought All for One.

That night Neito Monoma went for a walk because he couldn't sleep.

That night All Might was transported to Kashiku forest.

That night Neito Monoma became the Ninth Holder of One for All.
