As of most current testing, quirk use is limited to one subject at a time. User can maintain constant use of quirk up to thirty minutes before side effects arise.
Quirk Drawbacks and Limits: Quirk is fueled/enhanced in strength by caffeine intake. With a sigh, you shut the folder containing your records and push it to the side, the manilla folder sliding smoothly across the wooden table and stopping just before it falls over the edge. You shut your eyes tightly, waiting only until you could hear the faint, pressure-induced rumbling in your ears to release another long sigh and rise from your seat to go to the kitchen counter. The electric kettle had gone cold and you pushed down on the small tab to restart the process of heating the water up. As you went about opening the packet of tea and setting the little sachet into your mug, you thought back to the file you just read. The information there stated that you were found asleep and buried in the closet underneath some blankets, but that was not matching up with what you remembered.
”Stay here! Do NOT move from this spot, do you hear me?” Your mother shoved you into the closet, quickly throwing every blanket she could find on top of you. “No matter what happens, you hide in here until I come and get you! Don’t you even think about coming out before then!” From underneath the blankets, you could feel her lean against the pile, and her muffled voice carried through. “I love you. I’ll be right back, I promise.”
And then the pressure was gone and you scrambled to throw the blankets off of you as the door slammed shut. As you pulled the blankets off of yourself, you could hear more and more chaos erupting past the door. There were screams further off, but the fight seemed to be coming closer and quickly. There was rumbling, too, sometimes enough to feel on the floor and in the walls. Then, suddenly, it was right outside of the door: the screaming, the rumbling. The house shook violently, and you panicked and tried to re-bury yourself in the blankets, whimpering as tears filled your eyes, the fate of your family unknown.
There was the loudest boom you had ever heard and a few more loud thumps, and then... everything was quiet. You waited for a long while before you decided that it was safe enough to try and get out again. You threw the blankets off of yourself and scrambled to the door, thrusting it open to reveal the aftermath of the chaos.
The floors were littered with debris and blood, and you began to shake as you stepped out, careful with each step you took with your bare feet. A frigid breeze blew through the house and you walked towards the front door, hoping to find your mom or dad there waiting for you. When you rounded the corner, there was a gaping hole where the front of your house once stood. The orange glow of fire illuminated the room now that night had fallen, and you stepped out of what was left of your home and onto the road, still shuddering from both the shock and the cold. You look around, eyes wide as you take in what used to be your peaceful neighborhood.
“Wait, there’s someone in the road,” came a deep, lazy voice. You looked up from the ground and found a man with a scarf looking down at you. Beside him was a blond man with wild hair who looked down at you with raised brows.
“Hey kid,” He crouched down to meet you at eye level. “Was that your house back there?” When you slowly nodded, the man sighed deeply and put a hand on your shoulder. “Why don’t you come with us, huh? We’ll get you something warm to eat.”
You hesitated, furrowing your brows as you looked him in the eyes. When you determined that you could not find any trace of meanness in his expression, you relented and nodded your head.
“Alright, you carry her, Eraser!” the blond man spoke with a nod and a grin. The other man--you presumed to be ‘Eraser’--sighed and shook his head.
“No.”
“Aw, c’mon! You take her, and I’ll go take a look at the house. Just to… check things out.” There was something about his expression that made you frown.
The other man hesitated for a moment, narrowing his eyes at his friend. Eventually, though, he sighed and gestured for you to come closer to him. You wordlessly took a few steps closer to stand beside him.
“You owe me, Mic.”
“I’ll meet you back at the base, yeah?”
“Fine.” The lazy-voiced man crouched down to speak to you. “Listen, I’m not going to carry you if you can walk. We’re going to where all the heroes are at so we can figure out what to do with you.” He stood up and held out his hand for you to hold. “Come on, let’s go.”
With a nod, you took his offered hand in your much smaller one and began walking with 'Eraser' down the road. You turned back briefly to look over your shoulder as 'Mic' stepped through the hole in your house, disappearing into it.
The kettle whistled and you pressed the button to shut it off, then poured the hot water into your mug. As you waited for the tea to steep, you glanced around at your dimly lit apartment. It was paid for by the Hero Public Safety Commission so long as you continued to work for them, which you’d been doing for most of your life anyways. You were not a celebrity by any means, as proven by your extremely unflattering billboard ranking, so the pay from the Commission wasn’t enough for more than the studio apartment you called home. It's how they kept you under their thumb, you're sure of it.
You grabbed your mug and made your way over to the bed, sitting on the end of it and turning on the television, the local news channel you were last watching now popping up again.
The news anchor's serious tone filled the room. “The recent rise in both business robberies and street muggings over the last two weeks have resulted in many civilians refusing to go out in the evening past dark. Citizens who do decide to go out are encouraged to avoid walking alone. It is suspected that the crime group known as the Iron Locks are the ones behind the increasing crime rate, but heroes and investigators are still working on finding any true leads or evidence. If you have any information that might assist the investigation, please contact--”
You sighed into your mug, the steam rising up and clouding your vision briefly. Suddenly, the shrill sound of your ringtone sounded from further back on the bed and you leaned back to grab it, nearly spilling your tea in the process. Once sitting upright again, you huffed as you saw who was calling you. You rolled your eyes and tapped the green button to accept the call.
“Hello?”
“Hey, Nightfall.”
“What is it, Hawks?”
“Oh, nothing, nothing. Just calling to check in.” You could hear the teasing lilt in his tone and you narrowed your eyes despite the fact that he couldn’t see you do it.
“No you’re not. What do you want? I’m busy.”
“Busy doing what, reading over your file again?” You met him with silence and he sighed into the receiver. “I knew it. God, don’t you ever get out? It’s a Friday night!”
“I don’t see a reason for it,” you stated simply. “I don’t really go out unless it’s to do grocery shopping, or something. It’s easier to be out in my hero costume than as a civilian. That way, I'm ready for anything.”
“Listen, I know I’m not one to talk or anything, but you need to seriously get a life, Nightfall. Be a civilian! You’re what, in your twenties? Go get a boyfriend or something. Or a girlfriend. Whatever gets you laid and not so boring.”
You wrinkled your nose in annoyance. “Ugh, I’ve had enough of this conversation.” You held the phone away from your ear to hang up but paused when Hawks spoke up.
“Wait! Don’t hang up!”
With a sigh you brought the phone back to your ear. “Fine. What?”
“I’m going to give you the files for your next job tomorrow at noon. I would say ‘be home on time to get some sleep’ but I know you will be, you homebody.”
“Got it. I’m hanging up now.”
“Bye bye, birdie~”
“Shut up with the nickname,” you chastised before you hung up the phone. You tossed it beside you on the bed and resumed drinking your tea, changing the channel on the tv to a variety show, the audience’s laughter filling the room. Once your mug was empty, you rose from your bed and went back to the kitchen to deposit the mug in the sink. As you filled the mug with water in the sink, you thought about what Hawks said with a sigh. You were a homebody. You never left your apartment unless it was necessary, such as reporting for work or going to the store for necessities. Maybe… Maybe you should go out? No, that was a stupid idea. There’s no reason for it. You’d just go out and do what? Get drunk at a bar by yourself? Sounded stupid.
Though, a walk was less dumb, right? You pulled the curtain at the window to the side and bit the inside of your cheek in thought. The sun was setting. Would it be so bad to go for a walk? Some fresh air and getting away from reading over your own file again would do you some good, surely. Maybe you'd be able to catch one of those muggings they mentioned on the news...
Before you can convince yourself to stay home, you changed out of your pajamas and into some clean jeans and a sweater, then headed out of the apartment, locking it behind you. The sounds of the city street grew louder and louder as you went down the hall and descend the stairs, and you pushed through the door to the street with one last long sigh.
A walk would do you some good.
