A Sonnet for Sofa - by Coat Peg

Summary:

What if your soulmate just appeared at your place of work one day? What if he initially seemed a bit rough around the edges and she initially seemed to look down on him?

Regardless of circumstance, first impressions, or furniture placement, fate will not be denied.

She has decided to tell him how she feels via sonnet — telepathically of course because, although she is a Romantic, she is also a Coat Peg and therefore cannot speak.

Notes:

I was trying to write something in the comments section for the fabulous “Why The Sofa Farts” piece. I started with “Oh, Sofa! How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” Things just kind of snowballed from there.

Please accept this as the equivalent of 100 hits to the kudos button for your work, which I *adore*.

Also: My most sincere and humble apologies to Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

I love thee past the depth and breadth and height

Thy frame does reach; when feeling out of sight,

Eloquent air biscuits always amaze.

I love thee to the level of every day’s

Most quiet creak, by sun and dim street light.

I love thee freely, for thy strength and fight.

I love thee purely, more than any chaise.

I love thee with the passion put to fart

To help most all who come in through this door.

I love thee and thy hidden gentle heart.

From my perch, I look down and I ask for:

Fewer star charts, more time for (Swedish) martial art,

A chance to stay near thee forevermore.

Notes:

I am more familiar with Shakespearean sonnet structure — but as EBB’s original piece follows Petrarchan sonnet structure, that’s what I’ve used here. (abba abba cdc dcd) The iambic pentameter is a bit iffy in some parts but, hey, I tried. 🤣
