Work Text:
Kara fell for Lena when the new CEO first moved to National City, and Kara went along with Clark to interview her. Immediately when Kara’s eyes landed on the raven-haired goddess, she knew she had a crush. And when the pair started hanging out and having lunch together, her slight crush started growing. Kara would often talk about her infatuation with her older sister, Alex, and whenever the brunette would tell the super to confess her ‘Undying love’ (Alex’s words exactly), Kara would refuse and tell her sister Lena would never like her back. How could she? Lena was the CEO of a multi-million dollar company and lived a lavish life, while Kara was a measly reporter and owned a small studio apartment.
“Just tell her already!” Alex huffed, dropping a pizza box in Kara’s lap and sitting next to her on the small couch. It was Friday night, and Kara was in the middle of ranting about Lena, yet again, in Alex’s apartment.
“Every day it's Lena this and Lena that, just tell her!”
“Wha-I,” Kara spluttered, taking a bite of pizza, “I can’t do that! Do you really think she would like me back? She’s way out of my league!”
“You’ll never know if you don’t say something, and what’s the worst that could happen?” Alex questions taking a sip of the amber liquid in her cup.
“The worst that could happen is she hates me and never talks to me again!” Kara shouts, at this point, stress eating.
“Come on, Kara, where's your Supergirl confidence? Just tell her you have a ginormous crush on her!” As much as Alex loved her little sister, the number of times Kara talked about the green-eyed CEO was getting out of hand. She just wanted to see her sister be happy.
After that night, Kara decided Alex was right. She couldn’t keep these feelings to herself much longer. Every time she so much as looked at Lena, she was close to blurting out her feelings. So a week later, she confessed and was ultimately surprised when Lena had said the feelings were mutual.
They went on their first date not long after, one date turning into two, then three, until they’d been dating for a little over a year. They were content in their relationship and told each other everything, well, almost.
It had been a long week for both Lena and Kara. Lena having a meeting with men thinking they were better than her, and Kara having to interview a guy with an inflated ego. So, to lift their spirits and make them feel better, Kara had made reservations at a fancy restaurant the couple frequented. It wasn’t cheap, costing the super almost three months rent, but Kara knew the sentiment would be appreciated.
The pair was sitting on their small, candle-lit table. Kara dressed in a blue, mid-calf, lace dress and Lena in a form-fitting, green dress. Conversation was easily flowing between the couple when there was an audible “Lena, is that you?” From behind Lena and suddenly, a woman was standing at their table, and Lena was standing to hug the stranger (Or so Kara was thinking, but with how they were embracing, the two definitely knew each other).
“I can’t believe it’s you! What’s it been, ten years since we last spoke? What have you been up to?” The mysterious woman asked.
“Oh, you know, I’ve been busy running my company. What about you? I heard you were coming to expand your company. How’s that going?”
And the two were talking, completely ignoring Kara. The super slowly picked at her food, her appetite gradually diminishing. It wasn’t until 30 minutes had passed that either woman acknowledged Kara’s presence.
“And who’s this?”
“This is Kara,” Lena stated.
The super didn’t miss how there was not ‘girlfriend’ or ‘date’ in that introduction. Did Lena feel ashamed of being with Kara? Did she not want this CEO woman knowing she was dating a lowly reporter?
“Nice to meet you, Kara. Andrea Rojas,” The woman, now known as Andrea, stuck her hand out for a polite hang shake, which Kara took.
“Well, I’m sorry for interrupting. We should catch up sometime. How does lunch sound? I could come by Monday?” Andrea proposed.
“That sounds wonderful. I’ll have Jess clear my schedule,” Lena stated, giving the woman one last hug before the brunette walked away.
Monday? Did Lena forget they always went out for lunch on Mondays? The ravenette often cleared every Monday in advance, so she was certain there would be nothing to cut their lunches short.
“Kara, darling, are you alright? You seem to be picking at your food. Do you not like it?”
“Hm?” Kara shot her head up at being acknowledged.
Lena giggled, “I said, do you not like your food? We can call the waiter and get you something different,”
“No, there’s nothing wrong; I was just thinking. That’s all,” The blonde stated, eating a forkful of her meal.
Lena cocked her head, “Penny for your thoughts?”
Kara took a few more bites before finally working up the courage to talk, “Who was that?”
“Andrea? She’s an old-school friend. We met back at boarding school. She was my only friend,” Lena responded, taking delicate bites of her food.
Why had Lena never told her about Andrea? It wasn’t like the CEO had a lot of friends in school and couldn’t remember them. Kara had told Lena about Kenny, so why couldn’t Lena tell her about Andrea?
They continued their date, Kara no longer offering much to the conversation, but it didn’t seem to matter. After Kara had brought up Andrea, Lena started telling her about the pairs school days and about the brunette’s company. Kara giving simple head nods to let Lena know she was ‘listening.’
Monday rolled morning rolled around, and Lena had called Kara to apologize for not being able to have lunch with her, “I have lunch plans with Andrea, I’m sorry. We can have dinner together tonight if you want,”
Kara knew that wouldn’t work. Lena liked to work till late at night, and Kara would be asleep by the time Lena even began to even think about leaving, “No, it’s okay, I made plans with Alex anyways,” That was a lie. Alex was far too busy at the DEO to have lunch with Kara.
“Okay, if you’re sure,” Then there was talking somewhere on the other side of the phone, “I have to go, baby. I’ll talk to you later?”
They said their goodbyes, and Lena hung up, leaving Kara to drawn in her thoughts as she finished getting ready for work.
‘Did Lena forget I was sitting right next to her when she had made plans with Andrea?’ Kara pondered, ‘And why hasn’t she realized she had unknowingly canceled our plans?’
The blonde let out a huff as she grabbed her purse and left her apartment, deciding to go to Noonan’s for lunch.
Noona’s was a bad idea. Leaving Catco, in general, was a bad idea. Kara’s lunch break had rolled around, and as she was making her way to the café, she spotted Lena and Andrea walking into a lavish restaurant across the way. If that had been anyone else on any other day, Kara wouldn’t have that much of it. But this was Andrea, a woman that interrupted her date, proceeded to talk to her girlfriend for 30 plus minutes and then making lunch plans with her girlfriend on Kara and Lena’s set lunch day.
Kara pushed her glasses up her face as she continued her walk to Noonan’s. A slight frown on her face and shoulders slumped. As Kara sat by a window, staring far off into the distance at nothing with her coffee and sandwich, she couldn’t help but let her insecurities rise to the forefront of her brain. After she was dating Lena for few months, she had managed to shove all the thoughts to the back of her brain. Now they were resurfacing, all because of a certain brunette.
Kara couldn’t help but wonder if Lena would leave her for Andrea. The woman was also the owner of a million-dollar company and has known the ravenette since they were younger. Kara was well aware that Lena was way out of her league and could choose anyone. Often at the beginning of their relationship, Kara couldn’t help but stay up late at night, wondering why the CEO would choose her. After a while, she finally came to terms with it and stopped worrying if Lena would leave her, but now those worries had come back, stronger too. Now there was an actual person to compare herself to.
Friday rolled around, and Kara was sitting bored at her desk as she waited for her lunch break. When the clock finally read one in the afternoon, Kara hopped out of her seat and made her way to L-Corp.
“Hey, Jess,” Kara greeted the secretary, “Is Lena in her office?”
“You’re in luck, Miss. Danvers, she just got back from a meeting,”
“Okay, thanks. And how many times do I have to tell you to call me Kara?” The blonde asked, a playful tease evident in her voice. Jess only smiled in return as she got back to work.
“Hey, babe,” Kara greeted her girlfriend, who was busy working at her desk.
“Hey, Kara. What are you doing here?” Lena asked, her attention still on her screen.
“I came to take you to lunch!” Kara announced, bouncing on her toes, “There’s this new place that opened down the street, and I thought we could check it out,”
This seemed to get Lena’s attention, but not in the way Kara had hoped, “I thought I told you?” The CEO looked at Kara, her eyebrows furrowed, “Andrea and I made lunch plans. She needs help with her VR. We could check it out Monday?”
Hurt flashed through Kara’s eyes as she tried to keep from crying, Lena didn’t seem to notice, too occupied with whatever was on the screen of her computer, “Okay,” Kara stated, sounding dejected.
A few weeks had passed. Instead of the pair hanging out almost every day, Lena had started spending more time with Andrea. Whether it was during lunch or before Lena left L-Corp, it felt like Andrea was slowly replacing Kara. And tonight was no different.
It was supposed to be their date night. Kara had planned to invite Lena to her place, deciding to make pasta. The Kryptonian had set out a red table cloth and candles at her dining table and had a bouquet of plumerias waiting on the kitchen island. But when five o’clock came, there was no Lena, and before she knew it, nine o’clock came and went, so Kara decided to call Lena.
“I’m sorry, baby. I was helping Andrea with some finishing touches and lost track of time. I’m on my way,”
“No, it’s okay. You should go home and get some sleep,” Kara said, trying to hold back tears.
“Are you sure? I can be there in five minutes,”
“No, I’m sure,” Kara insisted. So the couple bid their goodnights.
Kara had had enough. She couldn’t sit by while her girlfriend replaced her with some friend from boarding school. She already had her insecurities. She didn’t need someone to actually come and take her girlfriend from her. Kara decided to visit Lena’s penthouse and confront the ravenette.
This was it, Kara was going to confront Lena and find out she preferred Andrea over her. ‘How could I be so naive?’ She chastised herself, ‘of course she would want someone who fit her standards better’ Kara stopped in front of Lena’s building, took a deep breath, and swallowed the lump forming in her throat.
She quickly entered the elevator and rode it to the top floor, wanting to get this conversation over as quickly as possible. It hurt Kara, knowing she could lose the best thing to ever happen to her in just a few minutes.
When she knocked on the door, she was greeted with a confused but happy Lena, “What are you doing here?” She asked, moving out of the way to let Kara in, “Not that I don’t like it when you spontaneously come to my place,”
Kara stepped into the lavish penthouse and hung her coat on the coat rack by the door before giving Lena a tight hug, thinking it would be her last.
“Did you miss me that much? We just saw each other earlier today,” The shorter woman giggled as she hugged the Kryptonian back.
After their moment, which lasted almost eight minutes, Kara let go of Lena and sat on her couch.
Lena asked if she wanted anything to drink, to which Kara responded with water, so Lena got a glass of water for Kara and a glass of wine for herself, setting the water in front of Kara before sitting next to her girlfriend.
Kara took off her glasses and started fidgeting with them before Lena ceased her movement by placing her wine glass on the table and taking both Kara’s hands in her own, a look of worry evident on her face, “What’s on your mind, babe? You seem like you’re nervous about something,”
Kara, again, swallowed the lump forming in her throat, “What’s your relationship with Andrea?” She asked, her eyes trained on a spot over Lena’s head.
“Andrea? We’re just friends, why?” Lena questioned, her face morphing from worried to confused.
“You two seem really close,” Kara had to take a deep breath before continuing, hoping Lena didn’t notice how shaky it sounded, “Were you two only friends in school? Or were you something more?”
“I mean, we dated, but when school ended, we fell out of touch, but that was so long ago,” Lena answered. Couldn’t she have mentioned any of that? They only broke up only because they fell out of touch, and none of that she decided to mention, “Why are you bringing this up?”
‘Might as well bite the bullet,’ She took a deep breath, “You keep spending so much time with Andrea and ignoring me,”
“Sweety, I told you I’m helping Andrea with her VR project,” Her voice was soft, but Kara didn’t feel any comfort.
And of course, Kara couldn’t help but feel like crying, “You spend every day with her! Our Monday lunches, our Friday date nights, our lazy Saturdays. It feels like I can’t get a moment with you!”
“Sweety, we had lunch together today, and we watched a movie together last night,” Lena’s voice was still soft and calming. Why was she so calm?
Kara shot out her seat, looking down at Lena and letting her tears fall. This concerned Lena, who stood and went to wipe the tears from her lover’s face, only to have Kara take a step back.
“We only hung out these last two days because Andrea is in France,” Kara could no longer hold her feelings back, “Just admit it, goddamnit!” Lena’s eyebrows scrunched further together in a silent question, “Admit you like Andrea more than me. Admit you’d rather date Andrea. Admit she’s more to your standards than me, that you want someone who can afford fancy lunches and lavish dinners. Admit you don’t love me anymore,”
Lena was too shocked by what was unfolding before her to talk. Why hadn’t Kara opened up to her sooner? Why did she keep this to herself till it bubbled over and she couldn’t keep it in anymore? But her next words broke her heart.
“If you have to choose between me and her, just choose Andrea because if you loved me, I would be your only choice. Just tell me you don’t love me anymore, stop making me believe you still care,” By this point, Kara was full-on sobbing, the lump in her throat was too big, and her legs felt like they would give out from underneath her.
Lena only stood rooted for five seconds before her brain kicked into gear, and she stepped forward to hold her crying girlfriend, “No, no no no,” She whispered, tucking Kara’s head in the crook of her neck, “I love you so much, Kara. More than anything, and nobody could ever get in between us. I’m sorry I let Andrea take up my time, and I’m sorry for making you feel like I stopped loving you. This is my fault, and there is nothing I can say to justify it, but I promise you I’m not leaving you, and I still love you. If you ever start doubting my feelings for you, come to me, okay? Don’t keep your insecurities to yourself, tell me so I can kiss them all away,” and to prove her point, she kissed Kara’s temple, “I don’t care you don’t own a company, or have millions of dollars, that’s not why I love you. You’re kind and generous and brave, and I love you because you’re you, and nothing could possibly beat that,”
Kara cried, that’s all she could do at that moment. Her snot and tears falling onto Lena’s expensive shirt, but the younger women didn’t seem to care. Lena kept whispering reassuring words and ‘I love yous’ into golden locks.
After Kara had calmed down and wiped her face with a tissue, the pair sat on the sofa to cuddle.
“I love you so much, Kara,”
“I love you too,” Kara croaked, her voice still sore from the crying.
The couple shared a kiss, Lena pushing Kara down on the couch. That night they spent together, and nothing could be better than that.
