Work Text:
Ah makeup. Wasn’t it just the perfect thing to express yourself. Not considered art so you’re not coming off as snobby but at the same time abstract enough to express anything one felt. This notion stuck with the ravenette for as long as he could remember. He still remembers the day his mother said the exact same words. She was seated at her vanity, applying a plain nude eyeshadow and humming a little song to herself. He had just turned eight and he was sitting on the, swinging his tiny legs off the edge of the bed. At the time he didn’t make much of it.
He remembered that memory fondly while he applied the eyeliner, giving himself cat eyes. He examined it to see if they were even. Satisfied, he put the eyeliner down next to the tiny ceramic sink. It took some time for the millionaire to adjust to his lover’s apartment, it was after all the size of his bedroom but that’s it. Nothing more. It intrigued him as to how people live their entire lives in a space so small. He didn’t linger on that thought for long. Instead he went out and looked down at his sleeping partner. A minuscule smile crept to his lips, he was glad the older man was finally catching up to his zzzs. It was a day off for Haru and the millionaire didn’t want to ruin his sleep. He barely gets any sleep on an average day after all. And with that little exchange, if you can even call it that, the millionaire left for work, saving the world from misusing adollium.
A FEW HOURS LATER
If anything woke Haru up it was the stark rays of light penetrating his room. The toffee haired man twisted and turned in discomfort before realizing that it was no use. The man lazily lifted himself off the cozy bed that was too welcoming for him to leave. He stretched and looked around, when he didn’t find his ravenette of a partner he shook his head almost as if he was disappointed. Regardless, one has to work. Luckily that one wasn’t him that day. He lazily made his way to the sink outside his little bath area, groggy and almost aching. Was this a sign of old age? Can't be, he’s 31. He lazily reached out for his toothbrush and tooth paste. Only to notice a cylindrical tube. Curiosity got the better of him and he grabbed it, examining the lustrous tube. Was this mascara? A mascara.... why was it there? Was it Daisuke's? He knew that Daisuke's tastes weren't necessarily fitting with his conventional tastes, but he was ready to support anything because thats just how much he loved the ravenette. His mind was running a thousand miles an hour. This was very new to him and he wanted answers. Answers that one may ask and at this point Haru didn't really know what but he needed to talk to Daisuke about it.
That entire day he was restless, pacing around the house, making mental notes as to how to ease into the question. It was a bit personal after all and he wasn't going to be one of those invading people. He has one too many aunts like that and he would want to be as opposite to them as he could. The muddled brain is never a yielder of results, and that was proving true for Haru, he was making mistakes he hadn't made in years. Some of them included, burning a part of a collar of the shirt he was ironing, letting water run out of the kettle when he was pouring it and the list went on.
To say he was distracted was an understatement. By the time he mended his mistakes, it was dusk and time for Daisuke to return, but Haru had lost all his sense of time that day, so when the billionaire unlocked the door and made himself home with a small declaration with a soft "tadaima" , the toffee haired man let out a startled gasp. He whipped his head towards the voice “oh Kanbe it’s just you." the older male sighed in relief and walked over to him.
The man in question raised a brow in confusion and pure intrigue when he saw his partner act the way he did, to say it was quite opposite of him, would be an understatement. For as far as Daisuke knows, it is only when something has his lover vexed or irritated that he acts this way, so he tried to figure out a way to ease him. He walked to his beloved, wrapping his arms around his shoulders, "You know I hate it when you call me that outside of work" He teased the man, arching his feet to match his height to the best of his abilities to peck Haru on the corner of his lips.
"I'm sorry" was all the older detective replied in a murmured manner. He still hadn't come up with a way to ask his partner about his practices. He gulped dryly, trying to think of a way to distract the attention away from him. "Why don't you go have a bath? Dinner will be prepared soon" he finally spouted, that was a valid reason right? Yes it was. Daisuke didn't seem to care since he was fine with taking a shower, seeing he was on field all day and felt a bit.... soot covered, especially with the subtle makeup he had on. Hence, the millionaire gave a nod of acceptance to the idea and parted from his lover, making his way to the shower.
This gave Haru some more time to come up with a good way to break the ice on the whole makeup issue, he whined silently in annoyance, why was this a big deal to him? What was it about this little fact that made Haru so.... confused and conscious? All this thinking made him forget the actual process of how he finished the dinner preparations, he swore he had started just a minute ago. But while he prepared for their meal, he didn't notice a freshly out of shower Daisuke, standing at the frame of the sliding doors, observing his every move. Seeing him work so diligently made Daisuke feel relieved? happy? He shook his head slightly and walked closer to the man in his sight. "Whats on your mind Haru?" Daisuke asked straightforwardly, without a second thought.
"What were you doing with makeup?" Haru answered almost as if he was hypnotized to give an answer but he had actually asked the question subconsciously.
The question itself brought a wave of curiosity to the shorter male who had thought that Haru knew of his habits. And to some extent he was right but Haru didn’t explicitly know about it. He batted his lashes slowly. “What people do with makeup. Put it on” his answer was crisp and short. If any one else was to hear him say it would seem a bit too sharp to them.
Haru wasn’t necessarily surprised with the answer but he didn’t expect a straightforward one either, Sure his partner is known to be the more direct person but some things were still new to Haru who was brought up in a more conservative environment. It wasn’t necessarily his family but just his surroundings.
“Haru. Why do you ask?” Daisuke asked sternly, well he did so only because he had already asked him twice before and had gotten silence in return.
“Huh? Oh uhhh” The toffee haired man trailed off “yeah because I saw your makeup stuff and was not sure what to do with it” he said and shrugged, his voice had something different about it that day. It wasn’t his usual voice whenever he was confused. No no this was uncertainty. And Daisuke picked up on it instantly. “Oh you can leave it as is." He explained. He also picked up how the man was a bit hesitant about the whole topic.
"Does it bother you?" he tilted his head to match those deep ultramarine orbs with the honey orbs of his love. He had introduced Haru to a plethora of practices, social events etc. and Haru had been mostly eager to learn, except the occasional events, which he eventually learned to love. Similarly, Haru had shown him a lot of the more domestic and traditional parts of life. For someone like Daisuke who hadn't grown up with family traditions, thanks to a certain older woman, it was all so new, but then again Haru himself was a rather refreshing person to him, which was the reason why he was so intrigued about him.
"N-no! I was just asking! I have never seen a man put on makeup unless he is acting!" Haru said innocently, trying to clear the air a bit more. In Daisuke's eyes, it was a very expected reaction. It was small but so endearing, showing that age did not define innocence. It was heart melting to Daisuke even, to a point he let the corners of his lips to arch up in a small smile.
"Well silly, it is not very common, but some men use makeup. Its quite natural" he explained as if it was a matter of fact. Haru heard the man speak with great interest and started "I see.. sooo how long have you been wearing makeup?" The question was an innocent one, he wanted to know more about this topic.
"Since I was 14" Daisuke replied flatly, he had found Suzue's makeup when she first moved in and a lot of the products were similar to what his mother used, so he looked at them and gave them a try and the rest is history.
"14?!" Haru asked in disbelief. He had never expected that answer, most children started exploring things when they were old enough to move out of the house. So that was a rather small number to him, but then again the boy had lost his parents at 8 so it made sense to some extent.
Daisuke simply nodded and looked at the man expectantly, as if he had any other questions, this would be the time. Haru was quich to pick up on it and nodded back "oh yes... uh have you done anyone's makeup?" he hoped he didn't sound idiotic but he was curious.
"No. No one except Suzue, Saeki san and you know about it, and hence no one has asked me to" Daisuke said, he wasn't ashamed of it, he just didn't trust enough people to let them in on his "secret".
"I see..." Haru hummed.. should he try it, he was intrigued, he wanted to see what Daisuke felt like more and more so he would ask him if he could experience certain things as Daisuke would. This somehow helped him to understand his emotions and he trusted this practice. Hence, he took a deep breath and finally asked "Would you hate it if I asked you to put it on me?" he said while doing a little action that was supposed to be a brush stroking his face.
That request was intriguing to Daisuke to say the least, he had anticipated the questions beforehand however, this request, truly threw him off. He didn't expect THIS. It took him some time to come to terms with it so that he could agree. He nodded slowly and said "Of course~ Lets finish dinner and get to it" To that Haru, nodded and started setting the table.
LE AFTER DINNER
As they finished cleaning up after them, Daisuke got up and went to get his little make up kit, it wasn't much, mostly the essentials because there wasn't much space at Haru's house to keep. "What do you do with make up anyway?" Haru mumbled and dried the dishes.
“Ah is that so~? Why don’t I show it to you~?” He said as he walked into the little basin area to get his little night bag full of makeup.
“E-eh!?” Haru’s startled voice stuttered out as he tried to follow the younger detective, who was already out with his stuff, now grasping the older man’s hand and dragging him to the bed. “Sit” Daisuke’s smooth voice commanded.
“Oi Kanbe! I’m not gonna-“ And just like that he had a cleansing wipe all over his face to clean his skin. The millionaire had done it enough times to use it to his advantage. And Haru sighed internally. What has his life come to? He didn’t necessarily know but it was something that made him happier. So he might as well embrace it. Besides, it’s just at home. And the cooling fabric felt amazing against his skin.
The ravenette watched the irritable expression turned into a more calm and relaxed one and Daisuke eased. He knew he would come around and accept it. Besides, it had been something he had wanted to share with Haru since only Suzue knew about this and now Haru. Makeup was such an intimate thing for him and he wanted to share every bit with him. He watched the male and then looked into the makeup bag realizing their skin tones didn’t necessarily match and hence his foundation would probably not compliment his tint. He would have to do with eye-shadow and lip work then.
Haru had resorted to accepting Daisuke’s wishes because it helped him understand him more and how his complex emotions worked so he sat there still waiting for this to get over. The ravenette focused on applying the eyeshadow, he didn't go for a very bold look but his subtle everyday look. It consisted of nude shades and a bit of highlight for that extra pop and a heavy serving mascara for making his lashes look thicker. He worked slowly to build it up and finally pulled away from the man. Haru was trying not to flinch because he was scared that he would lose an eye. He was getting rather ticklish and it was getting harder for him to not move. Daisuke scowled like the catboy he is and sat firmly in his lap "Stay still Haru" He requested.
"O-okay" Haru responded and tried his best.
"Now open your eyes and look up" Daisuke guided and got the mascara out to curl up his lashes a bit.
"W-what are you trying to do!" Haru exclaims as he sees the wand coming closer to his face.
"Making you more handsome, now stay still" he said and brought it closer to his lashes and rolled up the wand so that he could make the lashes look thicker as the substance and coated the lashes. Once satisfied with the result, Daisuke retreated and looked at his masterpiece, Haru looked stunning and it was a form of self gratification that Daisuke felt in that moment. He then turned to his little make up bag and pulled out a anice liptint, something he doesn't use unless he was feeling extra special and Haru was extra special to him.
"Now pucker your lips for me like this" and he showed him, Haru watched him and couldn't help but blush, he looked so beautiful in that moment and Haru couldn't resist so he snaked his arms around his waist and pulled him in for a kiss. Daisuke didn't get time to react to this however, so he just melts into the kiss that Haru pulls him in, its a soft and chaste kiss and it isn't passionate however its filled with love. It leaves Daisuke speechless as he drops the tube of lip tint to the floor, tangling his fingers in those toffee locks, kissing him back.
"I will pucker up for you for something else altogether~" The honey eyed man chimed and shifted so he was on top, pinning Daisuke down. To which the ravenette smirked and replied "By all means~"
