Chapter Text

“Hitoka-chan.”

Hitoka looked up at Kiyoko sitting across the table. Kiyoko smiled and tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear.

“You seem nervous,” she commented idly. Hitoka blushed.

“Ah…” She fiddled with her fingers on the surface of the table. What was she supposed to say? What does someone say to the girl they’ve been crushing on since they first saw her? Who they were on a date with?

She thought back to when she confessed to the other manager. Does she just talk to her like they do during practice? Tadashi had given her some tips, but Hitoka wasn't quite sure if they would help.

“Wh… do y- how are you?” She settled on finally, face burning red and eyes averted to the table. A tinkling laugh came from the other seat.

“I’m doing quite well,” Kiyoko responded in a wry voice. “I’m currently on a date with a really great girl I’ve liked for quite a while, so I don’t think I could be doing any better.”

At that, Hitoka raised her eyes to meet Kiyoko’s and noticed the older’s cheeks were flushed a light pink.

“How about you?” Kiyoko asked in response, smiling when Hitoka let out a breathy laugh.

“I’m also doing really well,” She said with a nervous giggle. “I’m also on a date with a really, really amazing girl I’ve liked since forever, so I think I’m in the same boat as you.” To her immense surprise, Kiyoko’s light flush went dark and a bright smile broke out on her face, prompting one of Hitoka’s own.

“You look really pretty right now,” Hitoka added after, eyes widening after a moment. “Not to say you don’t look pretty all the time! Because you do, you really do-”

Kiyoko laughed again, hand coming up to cover her mouth as Hitoka mumbled on.

“I’m going to go get a drink,” Kiyoko said to her as she stood up, bag in hand. “Would you like one? My treat.”

“Oh… thanks! I’ll have a matcha tea.”

“Be back in a minute.” And then she left Hitoka to her thoughts.

What should she say to Kiyoko? Hitoka was on a date with a goddess . She couldn’t just make… small talk. Kiyoko would be so disappointed. Surely she would want an interesting, stimulating conversation-

“Hitoka-chan, I’m back-” Kiyoko started, placing the two teas on the table.

“What do you think it would be like if chests got hard like dicks do when turned on?” Hitoka blurted.

Oh fuck fuck abort abort-

“You know, I don’t really know,” Kiyoko responded while slipping back into her seat. “I’d imagine clothing would likely have to be altered to compensate for hiding that and people would likely have less shame. But this is a rather intense topic for four in the afternoon on a Tuesday, isn’t it?”

“I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean- that came out of nowhere- I’m so so sorry!” Hitoka stammered, mortified. Where could that have possibly come from? Maybe interesting conversations weren’t a good idea.

“Hitoka-chan,” cut in Kiyoko, “it’s perfectly fine to feel nervous on a date. I’m nervous too.” She tucked her hair behind her ear again and adjusted her glasses before smiling at Hitoka. “So don’t worry and just say what comes to mind, okay?”

“Right,” Hitoka nervously agreed. If only the things that came to mind were coherent thoughts.

“Why don’t we try some icebreakers?” Kiyoko suggested, taking a sip from her drink. “Like those questions you ask when you meet someone new. Simple things, like your favourite colour or birthday.”

“Oh, okay,” Hikota said, thinking for a moment before shrugging. “What’s your favourite time of day?”

“Twilight,” Kiyoko answered in a soft voice with a smile. “Yours?”

“About an hour after dawn, I think.” Hitoka grinned. “Your turn!”

Kiyoko seemed to think for a moment. “Favourite class?”

“English. You?”

“Biology. Your turn.”

“Ah… favourite colour?”

“A deep blue, like indigo. Maybe more purple.”

“Light Purple! Now you.”

“What’s your favourite book genre?”

“Romantic fantasy. You?”

“Mystery. You go.”

“What’s your favourite team, besides Karasuno?”

At this, Kiyoko burst out laughing, leaning over a bit and covering her mouth to stifle the noise. Hitoka joined in after a moment, giggling into her hand and mumbling apologies to people turning around.

“Hitoka-chan,” Kiyoko finally said after they composed themselves. “I think if I were to answer that, Tanaka and Nishinoya would bawl.”

“They probably would,” Hitoka giggled again, imagining the dramatic tears the two second-years would sob. “But they’re not here right now, right? So there’s no harm if they don’t find out.”

“True,” Kiyoko conceded, before seemingly stopping to think over an answer. “I think… maybe Nekoma. They seem very put-together while still having fun. Johzenji might be second, but I couldn't imagine trying to manage a team like that.”

“That’s fair,” Hitoka nodded. Johzenji had excellent teamwork when they focused, but the energy of the team would have eaten her alive if she had gone there instead of Karasuno. Nekoma, though, was an excellent team with a good fun-play balance. “I think my favourite would probably be Dateko because there might be some pretty scary-looking players on their team but they’re good players and seem to get along really well.”

“Dateko’s also one of my favourite teams,” Kiyoko agreed, reaching for her drink again. “They’re all quite good. We’ve played some very impressive teams this year.”

“Oooh, I have another good question.” Kiyoko looked up curiously. Hitoka grinned at her. “Who’s your favourite Karasuno player?”

That caused Kiyoko to snicker again before seriously considering the question. “Don’t tell anyone, but… I think Azumane and Yamaguchi-kun. They’re very impressive volleyball players who are also kind and level-headed when needed.”

“I know you just said not to tell anyone, but can I tell Tadashi? He’d be absolutely overjoyed.” Kiyoko smiled at her again.

“Sure. I don’t think he’d say anything to the others anyway. I’m mostly worried about Tanaka and Noya’s opinions again.”

Hitoka pulled out her phone and shot a quick text to Tadashi. kiyoko just said you were her favourite player. She grinned as he immediately went to reply.

omg
tell her she’s my favourite ever

Hitoka relayed the message to a now-beaming Kiyoko when her phone pinged again.

enjoy your date >:) i expect details later

She grinned and dropped her phone back in her bag.

“Hitoka-chan, you haven’t told me yours yet,” Kiyoko teased with a smile. Hitoka huffed jokingly.

“Impatient, impatient. I think my favourite is probably Ennoshita-san, funnily enough. He’s got a level head and has very reliable playing. He can also keep Tanaka and Noya in line, which automatically puts him right at the top.”

Kiyoko nods. “Ennoshita-kun is supposed to replace Daichi next year, actually. He’s the perfect fit, so I’m glad he agreed to it.”

Hitoka paused to check the time and felt her eyes go wide. “Shit, it’s six.”

Kiyoko looked at her with a matching surprised expression. “Already?”

“Apparently. Damn.”

“Alright.” Kiyoko stood up then, slinging her back over her shoulder. Hitoka felt a brief flash of disappointment, sad the date was over already. “Come on, I’ll walk you home.”

“Oh, you don’t have to,” Hitoka said, gathering her things and standing too with a flustered face. Kiyoko smiled at her again.

“I want to. Don’t worry.”

The walk back was mostly quiet, the two girls just enjoying the shared silence all the way to the front of Hitoka’s apartment building.

“Well,” Hitoka said nervously. “Here we are.”

“Here we are,” Kiyoko repeated. She looked at Hitoka for a few seconds, seemingly debating something. “Hitoka-chan, may I kiss you?”

Hitoka felt her face explode.

“Yes! Yes, of course- I mean, only if you wa-” and Kiyoko kissed her.

On the lips.

Hitoka had to be dreaming. Surely it was too good to be true.

Kiyoko drew back after a few seconds, cheeks flushed and a smile bright on her face. “Would you like to go on another date sometime, Hitoka-chan?”

“Yes, I- yes,” Hitoka repeated for a moment, before shaking herself a bit. “And you can just call me Hitoka, if you’d like.” Kiyoko’s smile seemed to grow even more.

“Hitoka, then. I’ll see you tomorrow?”

“Yes! Tomorrow. See you. Yes.”

Kiyoko giggled once more before walking off back down the street.

Hitoka blinked a few times.

She had to tell Tadashi about that.
