sing only for me

Summary:

Yang starts developing feelings for Weiss and she might be slightly jealous of her friendship with Sun.

Or

How Yang's helpless pinning finally got her a girlfriend.

Notes:

THIS!

This was supposed to be the first installment of the series MONTHS ago, but turns out I suck at scheduling and keeping on track so here we are.

I've rewritten this so many times and I struggled to piece together the random scenes I would write during my lunch breaks at work but I enjoyed writing about these two together.

Anyways, I hope ya'll enjoy it!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Weiss Schnee was not the kind of person Yang thought she’d have any positive feelings for. A large portion of her patience was focused on not punching the heiress every time she insulted her sister.

It took a lot of work on Weiss’ attitude and behavior for Yang to even think about her romantically.

A lot of that came from Ruby’s help, tearing down the walls Weiss had built around herself, pulling a chair for herself right beside the heiress.

And just like that, Yang started seeing a softer side of Weiss.

Weiss with her hair down.

Weiss laughing at a cheesy dad joke Jaune made.

Weiss staring longingly in the direction of Atlas.

Weiss with a soft smile on her face as she talked to Ruby late at night when they thought Blake and Yang had gone asleep.

Weiss wiping away a small smudge on the young leader's cheek, causing both of them to grin stupidly at each other enough that Blake would yank Ruby away and into her arms (something she let slide since Yang herself had felt a bit jealous at them as well).

Weiss when she took the time every morning to make tea for Blake in the morning.

Along the way, her observations turned into pining, and for a while, Yang entertained the thought of confessing. To the point where she almost enlisted Ruby and Blake’s help.

So naturally, it hurt when she found out Weiss had been spending a lot of her time after class with Sun.

“So you can spend time with Sun but not with your team?”

Thinking back on it she was being stupid and green-eyed, but Gods had she been in pain.

Weiss blinked, turning her head towards Yang’s direction. Behind her, Blake and Ruby glanced at each other confused.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

Realizing her mistake, Yang stepped backward, hand reaching out to open the door.

“I- never mind.”

She ignored her sister and team’s calls and ran out of the room.

No one brought up Yang’s random jab the following day. And if anyone noticed Yang and Weiss throwing worrying glances at each other when the other wasn’t looking, they didn’t mention it.

Yang knew Weiss could sing.

It was kind of hard not to know when she had been one of the most prominent singers in all of Atlas. But it was never anything solid, maybe catching some words muffled from the shower door, a little hum now and then as she worked on homework.

So when Yang finally heard her voice she had stopped midway into the door room. Having come back from a sparring practice with Nora and Pyrrha she didn't expect to come across this scene.

The heiress looked like an angel, eyes closed as she reached the peak of the song, both her sister and Blake sat cross-legged on the Faunus’ bed listening contently.

As the last note faded out Blake and Ruby clapped enthusiastically.

“That was so good, Weiss!” Ruby breathed out. Blake nodded along with her girlfriend, “did you ever consider being a singer instead of a huntress?”

The rest of the conversation didn’t process through Yang’s mind as she stared at Weiss. Her chest felt like it was gonna explode, her heart aching in longing at the girl in front of her.

Yang was completely taken aback by just how beautiful Weiss had sounded, her voice effectively hitting the nail on the head for her to confidently say she was in love with her.

“Yang?” Warm blue eyes suddenly found hers and Yang felt herself choke on air.

“I- ah- I forgot to tell Coco something!”

Scared at the realization of this deeper feeling, Yang stumbled to close the door on her way out, hands covering her face which had been flushed red. She didn't know where she was going and she didn’t stop until she crashed into a wall. Sliding down to her knees, all Yang could think about was Weiss.

Somehow Sun had convinced Weiss to sing one of his favorite songs in front of the student body. It was a pretty upbeat song, with the kind of tempo that one couldn’t stop themselves bobbing their heads to.

Sun twirled Weiss, a small laugh escaping her before she belts out the rest of the song. A small part of Yang tried not to act jealous of the Faunus boy but she couldn't help it. He seemed to understand Weiss better than anyone else, even Ruby.

Even her.

It had taken weeks of Ruby breaking down her walls for her to finally turn and embrace them. But Sun came in, crashing them all into the ground and latching onto the heiress immediately.

When Ruby had asked Weiss if she was dating Sun, Weiss had been quick to deny it. Face twisted in a clear message that she didn’t think of him that way. And when Yang threw her own jabs at the heiress she felt relieved that they hadn’t been.

“Yang? Are you okay?” Pulled from her thoughts Yang turned to look at her partner. Golden eyes studying her, ears pinned down against her head. Yang slumped forward letting her forehead hit the table with a bang. “No.”

That still didn’t mean she wasn’t jealous.

Blake sighed. It hadn’t been the first time Yang had been this way. And it seemed she was stubborn enough to continue pinning after their teammate without confessing for a little while longer.

“Weiss?” she asked.

“Mh,” Yang grunted, still not budging from her position.

She was whipped.

Completely head over heels and there was nothing else she could do but accept her fate as platonic, never to be a romantic interest, friend, and worst of all... a teammate.

“You’re singing with Emerald from Team CEMN later!?” Ruby exclaimed.

Wincing slightly at the volume Weiss nodded, “I asked her if she could help me with some pronunciation for a song Sun found he wants me to sing.”

From the other side of the room, they heard something snap. Blake groaned inwardly at Yang’s dramatics.

“You good up there, sis?” Ruby asked, eyes filled with worry. Letting out a forced laugh Yang waved her away, “yea I’m good, just broke my pencil.”

Weiss rolled her eyes, “Brute.”

Ruby grinned at her before bopping her nose.

“Weiss you’re smiling.”

Weiss sputtered, “I am not!”

“You totally were.” Weiss turned to glare at Blake who ignored her.

It had started as a regular day for Team RWBY.

Regular boring classes all day, an occasional moment where Jaune almost died in Ms. Goodwitch’s class, and the same old Nora threatening to break someone’s legs.

Ruby had suggested going out into the city for the evening, mainly to get an excuse to take Blake to her favorite restaurant and have Weiss pay for it.

However, she had gotten a call from Sun at the last minute and excused herself from their plans. When she had come back to the dorm later that evening, Yang had gotten up in her face asking where she had been. The fight ended with both of them screaming loud enough that Pyrrha had to come out and mediate the situation.

If their friends saw them exchanging pitiful glances at each other the next day… well they didn’t mention that either.

Two weeks later…

Yang and Weiss were left alone in the dorm room. Blake, having left earlier to check on Ruby at the nurse’s office after her sparring session with Pyrrha left her heavily injured, had yet to return.

The evening had once again led to an argument. Yang having refused to make conversation, much less eye contact with the heiress, left her hurt.

"What is your problem?" Weiss asked, her eyes trying to find the answer on her face.

Yang played ignorant.

"What are you talking about, Princess?" She raised an eyebrow, plastering on an exaggerated smirk in hopes of covering up her slip up.

Weiss felt her cheeks redden slightly before clearing her throat. "You've been very closed off lately, and frankly I am confused as to why." Yang waved her away, "I'm not quite catching what you're throwing, Princess."

At that Weiss finally snapped, "Yang Xiao Long! Stop being an idiot and explain why you've been ignoring me!"

Yang's own patience flared, "I said I'm fine! Drop it!" Her eyes flared red in a warning but Weiss held her ground and got into Yang's personal space. Jabbing a finger onto Yang's chest the blonde shrunk a bit at the glare Weiss gave her, "No! I am tired of this!- walking on eggshells around you! I think your teammate walking out of a room immediately after you walk into one would hurt anyone"

Yang felt her chest tighten as the glare Weiss gave her melted into tears.

"Do you know how much it hurts!?" The pointed finger on her chest trembled. Yang reached up to grasp it into her own, a soft look made it onto her face.

"I'm sorry Weiss."

Weiss scoffed, pulling her hand away from Yangs. "You keep apologizing but I have yet to see a difference in your behavior."

Yang's shoulders dropped as Weiss continued, "I'll have to learn how to live with you disliking me, it's not like I can go to Ruby or Blake. Which is why I turned to Sun-"

Yang's heart clenched as old insecurities came back to the surface.

"Do... do you like Sun?" a soft voice came out of Yang's mouth.

"I- what?" Weiss asked, confused. Yang licked her lips, hands clenching as she steeled her nerves, "do you like Sun?"

"As a person, yes, but if you are asking if I'd date him then no," Weiss said slowly, her own eyes shining with an emotion Yang couldn't place.

"Then... do you like me?" Yang closed her eyes tightly waiting for the rejection.

When she didn't she opened her eyes to see Weiss crying. Jolting forward Yang reaches her hand out, "Weiss? What's wrong? if- if you don't feel the same then I'm sorry-”.

Weiss shook her head and before she noticed had pulled her down to kiss her.

Eyes widening Yang didn't return the kiss immediately, but once her mind caught up, she eagerly moved her lips with Weiss'. Hand resting on the edge of Weiss' back, she had her left hand cup Weiss' cheek to tilt her head upwards and coax her closer.

Underestimating her strength, Yang stepped forward to get closer to the heiress eagerly, who lost her balance and fell down pulling the brawler with her. They both stared at each other panting before the situation caught up to them and they burst out laughing, pressing their foreheads together, smiling at each other.
