Work Text:

Humming, singing, snapping, clapping.

The stars shone in the sky, a full moon hanging heavy and bright, illuminated the flat rooftop of the building. It sat in the middle of the city, one of the tallest. It was an office building, owned by a big company or a private business. Not that it mattered to him.

Humming, singing, snapping, clapping.

The world was a cruel one, it dealt him the wrong hand in life, he lost the gamble. The winners get a quirk! The losers remain quirkless and end up bullied…

He lost. He lost everything. A friend, a dream, a passion. They didn’t feel bad for him, they told him he could still be great. Be a doctor, a firefighter, a support engineer. You’ll be great at it, Izuku! Why don’t you think about it? They told him to sit on the sidelines and watch everyone accomplish his dreams.

Humming, singing, snapping, clapping.

He was dancing around the ledge of the roof, balancing on one foot.

Heroes were watching him, Uravity and Dynamight, they were ready to charge at him if necessary. It didn’t bother him.

They called for him; ‘get away from the ledge Deku ’ and ‘come on Izu-kun , just come with us!’

He could hear the fear in their voices, but he didn’t stop. He was having fun, why should they ruin it?

He laughed, something that was dry and bitter, it interrupted his humming and singing awkwardly. The area fell silent, even the city life was dead. He let out a giggle before picking up his humming, singing, and dancing, taking more daring dips over the ledge of the building. He felt joy hearing the way they would gasp, hearing the sound of their shoes shuffling in place as they readied themselves to save him if he fell.

He wasn’t going to fall.

Humming, singing, snapping, clapping.

“You take my fun away, Kacchan .” He watched as the pro hero flinched at his words, knowing it would hurt him, “Wasn’t middle school enough for you? All those years of torment, the bullying, the physical abuse. Didn’t that please you ?” He stopped for a second, staring at the hero.

He gasped, putting his hands on his cheeks, exaggerating his expression.

“Does Ochako-Chan know what you did to me? Do your other friends know?” He smiled. The look in his eyes was sinister and lacking the warmth and admiration they showed in their youth.

Humming, singing, snapping, clapping.

He sat on the ledge, back facing the other buildings and street below. He kicked his feet, whistling a tune no one could name. ‘Just come with us Deku, this isn’t you.’

He whistled a different tune, another one none of them could name.

Humming, singing, snapping, clapping.

He looked to the night sky, his eyes tracing the stars and connecting them in his mind. ‘Izu-kun, please, just get away from the ledge of the building.’

He closed his eyes and sighed a long and tired sound.

Humming, singing, snapping, clapping.

He looked between the heroes, a small smile appearing on his face. His voice came out sweet.

Humming, singing, snapping, clapping.

“You don’t need to worry about me, Kacchan , Ochako-Chan , I’m okay! Pinky promise.”

Humming, singing, snapping, clapping.

His smile soured, his eyes shining with something the heroes had never seen before.

Humming, singing, snapping, clapping.

“I’m just having some fun.”

He shrugged, pushing himself off the building, laughing as he seemingly fell.
