Chapter Text
The moment Kate went out to get her breakfast and saw Mary sitting on the dining table, with a stern expression on her face, she knew that they were about to have a serious talk. Mary seldom pulled that serious expression, so some shit must have gone down.
Seeing that she had no option but to ask Mary, Kate moved forward resolutely.
Deciding to start their conversation on a cheerful note, Kate greeted her. "Good morning, Mary. Ready for your classes?"
"Kate, we need to talk."
Oh, so today was one of those days. When Mary was in a no-nonsense mood. Okay, that's alright, she reminded himself. She has done nothing wrong, she repeated to himself like a mantra. And it's not like anyone knew about Anthony and their little arrangement, or her own confused feelings. So it was all okay, she reminded himself. It must be about something else. Someone else.
Feeling a lot better after having this conversation in her head, Kate replied. "Sure, what about?"
"You know exactly what I am talking about."
Well no, that she did not. "No Mary, I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Kate, I have eyes y'know. I have seen you stare all moon-eyed at Anthony Bridgerton!"
Okay, so maybe she wasn't as great an actor as she'd thought herself to be. "No really Mary, I'm not kidding. We're just friends. Anthony and I, we are literally just friends. Friends. Just friends." Satisfied with the number of times she stressed on the fact that they were just friends, Kate was decidedly not ready for the next words that came out of Mary's mouth.
"Okay then, how often do you wake up naked with your other friends?"
Thank God, she was not drinking water. Or else she would have spluttered everything out. "Mary, what, uh, what do you mean?"
"I mean exactly what I said Kate. I came a bit early two days back, knocked on your door and permanently scarred my eyes by seeing you two naked. So now do you want to tell me something?"
Uh-huh, looked like the cat was out of the bag.
