Everything means nothing (if I can't have you)

Summary:

Dick and Clark have been going strong for two years now.

Work Text:

“Mmm, come back to bed.” Dick moaned in his sleepy state, eyes half-closed. He pulled the covers a little. Winter in Gotham was unforgiving and he already missed the warmth the other man offered him.

“I wish I could Dick, but you know Bruce somehow always knows when I'm here. He’d suspect.” Clark whispered, well aware of how difficult it was for Dick to fall back asleep after being fully awoken.

“Just tonight? Please? I’ll be cold if you leave, I always miss your body heat after.” Dick pouted and Clark's heart couldn’t help but melt. He contemplated for a moment, his temptation too strong, but shook his head. Not that the boy on the bed could see him through the darkness.

“Another time perhaps.”

Dick sighed, disappointed.

“Mhhm.”

Clark tucked his slightly wrinkled shirt in his pants and pulled them up completely. He buckled his belt, put on his shoes in two quick, swift movements and grabbed his jacket on one hand, throwing it behind his shoulder. As his fingers closed around the doorknob, though, he turned to look one last time at the already sleeping boy beside him.

He looked so peaceful, laying there, one hand over the sheets. A dim light, provided by the little green lamp on the nightstand next to his face, rendered only half part of him visible. Clark softly smiled at the irony. He was like the moon, his boy. Bits and pieces of him hidden away, never to be seen.

Except him, on a few lucky days. And what a privilege it was, always. To know you can be loved so fiercely, so freely, it filled you with a confidence no one night stand could ever do. Not that Clark was that kind of guy, but he and Dick were not in a relationship yet either. Dick loved immensely. His love knew no boundaries, he just gave and gave, even when he didn’t receive anything back.

Now, don’t get him wrong, Clark was in love with Clark too; Always. There was no part of him that doubted that. But, he also knew that each person loves differently and he could say this with absolute certainty, he had never been loved like this before, not so strongly.

They had been going strong for two years, whatever this was between them. They've had their difficulties. Sometimes, there were so many of them it felt like they just. Kept. Coming. They had fought and they had cried, they had been hurt and they had been apart, but never, not even for one moment, had Clark doubted him. And he hoped, knew, that Dick hadn't either.

Lately, though, they had been getting more and more, all circled around one topic: They had to tell Bruce. Clark wanted to, he did. The thought of losing his oldest friend, though... It terrified him. Bruce had been there for him in times when he had no one, when all he wanted to do was give up.

Clark snapped his eyes shut, guilt overcoming him. Dick deserved everything. And he was holding back. When he opened them again, the man across him was sleeping soundly, the steady sound of his heartbeat calling to Clark.

One foot out the room, he stopped himself, turning back. Undressing himself again, he went under the covers, pulling Dick closer underneath.

"My heat." His idiot said, awarding him with a beaming smile. Clark leaned in and kissed his cheek.

He would worry about everything tomorrow.
