It happened nearly every night while Ty was overseas. Zane would dream of them. Ty and Becky.
Sometimes it was a little heavy handed, his mind leaning into the obvious anxiety that Ty would leave him just like she did. That they would be together and he would be alone.
There was some comfort in the fact that they always seemed to get along. She would have liked him. Zane knew that much.
But every time would end the same. Waking up cold and alone in an empty house, wondering if Ty was already gone. How long would it take for him to find out?
He tried to sleep.
They where walking along the water this time. Some beach he didn’t quite recognize. He was a few paces behind them as they whispered and giggled.
He couldn’t hear what they were saying. Couldn’t catch up to them. Couldn’t reach out and touch them. They were getting further and further away. The water was rising. He couldn’t call out to them.
Sometimes it was almost nice. The three of them in the kitchen. Talking. Laughing. Making dinner. Like a little family, just the three of them.
Those were always the worst.
Because then he’d wake up. To an empty bed in an empty room in an empty house.
