“Oh, don’t get me wrong Kara, I hope you’re happy but not like how you were with me.”
“Lena, please.”
“Don’t patronize me, Kara! I know I’m selfish, but I can’t let you go. So, go ahead and find someone ‘great’ but don’t find someone better. I hope you’re happy, but you don’t get to be happier.” Lena spits over the top of her scotch glass.
Kara shifts uneasily from foot to foot, not used to being the cause of the young woman’s ire. “Lena, please, you know why I can’t.” Lena scoffs into her glass as she knocks back the remaining amber liquid.
“Do you tell her she’s the most beautiful girl you’ve ever seen? All that eternal love bullshit that you know you’ll never mean. I can remember when I was naïve enough to believe you meant it when you said it first to me.” Lena stands from her desk and goes to her drink cart to pour yet another glass of scotch.
“Don’t say that I always meant it when I said it to you, every single time Lena.” Kara whispers, staring at her feet.
“Yet here we are Kara! I’m stuck here picking her apart like somehow cutting her down will make you miss my ‘wretched heart’. Don’t worry, I heard every word of that conversation.” Lena’s voice drips with venom as she turns on the now shrinking Kryptonian woman.
“But, hey, she’s beautiful, she looks kind and, I’m sure she gives you butterflies.” Lena whispers the last part as the tears she’s been fighting back finally creep up on her. Kara steps closer to the young heiress and gently touches her arm. The touch seems to be enough to refuel the once dwindling fire Lena had in her chest.
“Don’t touch me! You’ve lost that privilege.” Lena hisses before stepping out of Kara’s space. The Kryptonian looks torn between hurt and confusion at the refusal of her touch.
“As I said before; I hope you’re happy Kara. Really, I wish you all the best. Go on, say you love her, but know you will never love her like you love me. Promise me that you’ll think of me fondly when your hands are on her.” Lena’s eyes darken slightly as the air grows thick with the almost electric sensation of her magic.
“Lena, please, don’t do this. You know this is not what I wanted.” Kara pleads knowing how badly this will end. Lena laughs darkly at the nervous hero.
“You sure did a bang-up job of stopping this from happening!” Lena seethes from her corner of the room.
“I have to get married to her! This is an arranged since birth type deal Lena. You know this!” Kara finally yells back at her. Lena stares at her quietly before finally cackling loudly.
“Don’t play me for a fool, I know you were given the option to choose Kara. I heard the whole thing. It seems you have forgotten that though I may be a human, I am also a witch. You made this decision Kara, not me.” Lena says calmly even as her magic continues to swirl between them.
“No, that’s not possible.” Kara murmurs confused. Lena again laughs at the surprising ineptitude of her former lover.
“Kara, really? You brought me with you, of course I was able to hear everything. Honestly, how daft can you be? Your mother knows Kara, that is why she asked you repeatedly if, you were sure!” Lena stares back defiantly at the dumbfounded Kryptonian.
“I don’t, I don’t understand.” Kara mumbles. Lena rolls her eyes at the helpless golden retriever of a woman in front of her.
“For Christ’s sake Kara. You are a grown adult! And a fucking superhero to boot! Krypton is gone, you don’t owe Argo a damn thing but here we are.” Lena waves her hand flippantly, suddenly appearing in her chair again. “Did you honestly think that I would just go along with this whole charade? That I would compromise my own worth for you to fulfill some fantasy at my expense? No. You can see yourself out.” Lena spits.
Kara can’t fight the magic laced around the command and is forced to turn and head for the door.
“And Kara;” the Kryptonian pauses mid stride desperate for Lena to understand “I hope you’re happy, but it’ll never be like how you were with me. I may be selfish, I know, I can’t let you go. So, you’ll find someone great but will never find better. I hope you’re happy, but you will never be happier.” Lena’s magic slides over her usually impenetrable skin, sticking to her bones and burning brightly before cooling to a dull ache.
“Lena, no, please.” Kara’s voice cracks heavily as tears spill down her cheeks as Lena’s spell takes hold.
“Hm? Enjoy your parting gift Kara. Now you’ll always know the extent of damage you have caused. Now I see why the tales of witches and wizards came to such an abrupt end in Kryptonian history, your people weren’t worth the hassle.” Lena says nonchalantly as she sips from her glass.
Kara stiffens at the mention of her lost planet’s history. “You know nothing of what the archives hold about your people!” Kara spits back at the young heiress.
“There she is! Where was this fire when asked to renounce any relationships on Earth for your betrothed, Girl of Steel?” Lena teases with a vicious grin. Kara turns to meet her gaze and knows she has fallen into a trap.
“Just a friendly reminder; be sure to think of me fondly when your hands are on her, I hope you’re happy, but you will never be happier.” Lena laughs darkly as she watches her spell grow and burn under the Kryptonian’s skin again. Kara wraps her arms around herself tightly as her discomfort grows before subsiding as Lena’s spell again takes hold. The Kryptonian quickly makes her way out of Lena’s office and opts to take the stairs to get away from the young Luthor faster.
Lena laughs maniacally from her office, the sound following the fleeing Kryptonian down the stairwell. The young Luthor leans back in her chair humming quietly under her breath.
I hope you’re happy, just not like how you were with me.
