Work Text:
So there was a dragon, and they fought it. It used to be a person? Maybe an alien? And called himself Fin-Fang-Floom?
Scott is kinda done. Literally. Mission done. After a shower and a nap, he's chilling in a large living room with type area on one of the floors of the avengers tower. Because he has 6ish hours to kill until his flight leaves. ( "No Tony, I'm not taking a private jet to get back to San fran, but I will accept a lift to get past the TSA and lines.")
Big bowl of fresh popcorn in his lap, He channel surfs to find something entertaining. And he find it. The Producers is on and he's a sucker for a musical comedy. It's only a few minutes in and he settles in the the large couch.
He's not surprised when someone else joins him on the couch. It's really big and really comfy, and it recipes too! What is surprising is that it's Sam. Scott and Sam both agreed to move on from that break a long while back and are decent on the field together. Friendship is tentative but not unwelcome.
He doesn't even glance when Scott hums along to I wanna be a producer, just reaches in to the bowl of popcorn.
They both take a break at the hour mark for food and come back to the couch with sandwiches that were fresh from a local deli and waiting in the kitchen for them. (Jarvis is one amazing piece of software!) Thanks expressed, they settle back into the movie.
Scott allows himself to sing along (quietly) to the song on screen.
"Springtime for Hitler and Germany, deutschland is happy and gay!
We're marching to a faster pace, look out here comes the master race!"
He's interrupted by an unamused voice from the doorway asking, "I really hope I misheard what you were singing."
Steve Rogers enters the room with a frown and his arms crossed.
Oh shit. Captain America just heard him singing about Hitler. The blond man on the screen is still belting out nazi praise in key and Scott wants to die. He regrets punching the dragon in the face and not being flame broiled by its fire breath.
He freezes in place while he works out the best way to quickly evacuate the room, building, state, and then possibly the planet.
He's wondering if he can even make it out of the room when Sam bursts out laughing next to him.
Both Scott and Steve turn to stare at him, one with relief and the other in confusion.
"Steve, this isn't what it looks like, this is a musical comedy about two guys who try to make a play that'll fail, so they make it about, well, nazis. Jarvis, tell him the summary of the movie please."
"Mr. Wilson is right captain, this fictional comedy musical is about two men in 1959 who realize they can make more money with a flop rather than a hit so they find the worst screenplay, written by a nazi."
Sam butts in with his own explanation. "It ends up being funny because the guy who ends up playing Hitler in the play is a very feminine guy and the audience sees it as a joke so it ends up being a comedy hit." Slowly Captain America loses his frown and Scott allows his muscles to unclench.
"Listen, watch the rest of the movie with us, and you'll see that I'm right. You might even enjoy it."
"I'm not one for starting a movie in the middle." Captain America now looks more human when he's having and uncertain moment.
"So we can start over. Jarvis. Can you restart the movie?"
"Of course." The British voice responds in his ever polite manner. So another sandwich is made because food makes everything better, and the three of them start the movie over. Steve even laughs when Uula paints the room white, and after that what little tension remained shatters into good humor.
"You know all of these songs?" Steve asks, after the movie is over. "Yeah, I grew up watching the original, I like musicals." Scott tries not to be defensive about it. He used to be teased for it.
"Got any recommendations?" Scott smiles. "Yeah Cap, a bunch."
About 4ish months later, somewhere in the tiny islands of Hawaii, Scott is gently sweating under two uniforms, and if all goes to plan hell be ditching the yellow one soon. A.I.M really needs a new uniform because its too easy to knock out one head-to-toe yellow henchman and steal one.
Its easy to gently hum the first few bars of " I wanna be a producer." When he passes by a captain america locked up like hannibal lecter, mask and all. Steve doesn't even look in his direction, but responds quietly with 8 bars of prisoners of love. Behind his own helmet and the A.I.M. mask, Scott smiles. Jarvis found an HD version of My Fair Lady, they were gonna watch it tomorrow with Thor.
Life is good.
