Chapter 1: Even the Prettiest Flowers Wilt

Chapter Text

Seonghwa loved Yongbok, despite his mortality. He didn’t care.

The moment he met the young brother of the emperor, he fell in love instantly.

His pretty blue would always light up when the demon talked with him. Yongbok’s freckles seemed to glitter like starlight no matter what his mood was.

Seonghwa loved Yongbok, despite his mortality. That was his killing grace.

The demon was immortal. He couldn't die unless at the hands of another demon. Yongbok was mortal. He would end up dying soon. Seonghwa wanted to cherish every moment with the young prince, every single tiny moment.

If only that man with the sword didn't stab him through his heart.

"Your majesty!" General Hyunjin runs up to the human emperor's side, his twin swords in hand. "The intruders are almost all dead!" The emperor, Chan, stabs his sword through another enemy soldier and kicks his body free from it.

"Good," he nods. "Any fatalities yet?" Hyunjin shakes his head no. He and Chan quickly duck their heads as an enemy arrow flew through the air and struck a pole. Hyunjin quickly stands up and begins running towards whoever launched the arrow, his swords poised for attack.

Almost all of the soldiers were dead. Chan hoped their bastard leader was still alive. If not, they'll just find a living soldier and use them for questioning.

"Channie!" Chan's younger brother Yongbok runs to his side, blood covering his face and spear. Judging by Yongbok's state, it wasn't his blood.

"Yongbok what is it?"

"I can't find Seonghwa!" There was worry on Yongbok's face, immense, painful worry.

"I believe I saw him outside with Hongjoong trying to prot- YONGBOK WAIT!" Yongbok was already racing away from Chan. He could feel his heart sink. Something bad is bound to happen. The outside perimeter was where the fighting was worse. Yongbok may be good but he wasn't good enough to fight off the magic users.

Yongbok jumps over the body of a soldier and runs out the wide open doors of the hall. He finds himself in the garden where he and Seonghwa would take walks. Some of the plants were now burning to a crisp from a fire user.

"Seonghwa!" he calls out. Yongbok needed to find him. He needed to make sure that he was safe. He couldn't live with himself if anything bad were to happen to Seonghwa.

"Seonghwa, where are you?!" Yongbok cried out again. In the distance, there was screaming.

Yongbok knew if there was a scream of terror, Seonghwa was nearby.

The prince starts running as fast as he can to where the scream was. He jumped over a hedge and another dead body with slashes crisscrossing it. Yongbok skids to a halt and sees Seonghwa. His blonde hair moved with him as he dodged attacks from a soldier.

He was quick with his attacks, stabbing more and more of his favorite daggers into the body of the soldier.

The man begins to crumble from the blood dripping out of his body. His breath became hitched and weak. Seonghwa watched as he collapsed to the ground, barely holding onto life. The demon kneels down to inspect him, his head turning slightly.

"Don't try to fight it," he mutters. "Those daggers are lined with poison. You're never waking up." The soldier let's out a final groan as Seonghwa stands up and wipes dirt off of his feather cloak.

"Seonghwa! Love!" Yongbok jumps down the slope and makes his way to Seonghwa, a large smile on his freckled face.

The demon returns a soft smile full of love and adoration.

"Yongbok..."

The prince drops his spear and jumps into Seonghwa's arms. The demon pulls him close and presses a soft kiss onto the top of his head.

"I'm glad you're safe, my darling lilac." Yongbok smiles and wraps his arms tighter around Seonghwa, brushing his back gently.

"Are you hurt?" Yongbok asks in a low voice. Seonghwa shakes his head. He pulls away from Felix and cups his cheeks in his hands. He looks longingly into Yongbok's sparkling blue eyes. Seonghwa takes in all of the young prince's features. Oh how dearly he loves him.

Suddenly, Seonghwa felt a sharp pain in his chest. He watches as the light in Yongbok's eyes slowly dim. The prince coughs up blood as his grip on Seonghwa slowly loosens. Yongbok falls over, his head hitting the demon's shoulder.

"Yongbok? YONGBOK!" He wasn't breathing. Seonghwa looks up slightly to see a man wearing a metal helmet, a sword in his hands going straight through both Yongbok and Seonghwa.

The demon chokes back a cry, his gray eyes dilated in horror. He looks up at the man.

"What have you done!" he hissed. Seonghwa pushes himself away from Yongbok, the tip of the sword leaving his body. He stands up, the wound instantly healing itself. The man lets go of his sword, stumbling back in horror.

Darkness extends from Seonghwa's fingertips. He looks down in disgust at the man as he tries to run away. The dark tendrils quickly loop themselves around the man's leg. They drag him back to Seonghwa and lift them above the demon so he could see his face.

Seonghwa removes the helmet and grimaces at him.

"You bastard," he growls in disgust. "You killed my Yongbok, my darling lilac. You killed him!" The man puts his hands together and starts whimpering.

"I-I'm sorry! Please forgive me!" Seonghwa gives him a confused look. He starts laughing at him, a cackle that sends darkness into the man's heart.

"Forgive you? After what you have done? You'll be lucky just to get struck down by your own sword!" The man starts crying as more of Seonghwa's darkness travels up his body and into his mouth. He drops to the ground as he crawls his way to Seonghwa, grabbing his foot.

"Help me!" he gargled. Seonghwa rolls his eyes and steps on his foot. The man lets out a guttural scream as he begins to choke. Seonghwa bends down and lifts the man's chin slightly.

"I hope to see you in Hell. Trust me, I am far less kind down there then I am at this moment." The man continues screaming as the darkness devours him from the inside out. Soon there was nothing but dust.

Seonghwa looks back to wear Yongbok's body laid. His eyes filled with tears as he slowly makes his way to where his lover was. Seonghwa carefully takes the sword out from his chest and holds the dead prince close to him.

He cried silently as he took in Yongbok's sweet scent of flowers one last time.

"My darling lilac... I'm sorry I couldn't protect you. I hope you can forgive me."

Chan and Minho's wedding was put off, they said they wouldn't get married until the first snowfall. It was spring.

Yongbok's pyre ceremony was full of heartache for Seonghwa to be at, but he came for Yongbok. To see him one last time before his ashes became one with the wind.

"Chan... I'm sorry your brother was killed because of my actions," Seonghwa apologizes as they watch Yongbok's body burn. The young emperor looks up at him, his eyes red from tears.

"It isn't your fault, Seonghwa. None of us knew this would happen," Chan responds quietly. Seonghwa looks at the ground sadly. He turns his attention back to the emperor and hugs him.

"We're never seeing Yongbok again..." Seonghwa cries. Chan nods his head, tears streaming down his face.

Seonghwa loved Yongbok. He wished he could come back to him.
