Chapter 1: Bunny Suit

Chapter Text

You were literally on the brink of tears. Everything is an entire mess! I can't stand Wanda, I can't stand Tony, I can't stand law, I can't stand these stupid smelly streets! I can't stand those closet case cat-callers! I can't stand the stale unseasoned non gourmet food! I can't stand Oklahoma! God, I wish my sisters were here now. I wish I didn't go here at all!

"... Are you ok?" You hear a voice to the left of you. You nod your head at the stranger, not looking up. "Can you stand up?" You grin a little and look up to meet pale turquoise eyes. Maybe things aren't that bad.

He moves a little closer and leans over you. Usually you'd be screaming right now, but you're completely frozen and in awe of the stranger. Hot and caring, this is a bigger win than that Burberry trench coat I got for only $1,590! He stands straight up after doing nothing and leaving you confused. "You were sitting on my keys." The jingling noise ringed in your ears as he dangled it by your head.

You silently curse at yourself for your idiocy. I knew something felt lumpy. I hate keys, I hate Oklahoma! The stranger raised an eyebrow at you flawlessly, making you swoon in your head. Did I say that outloud?! He chuckled in amusement at your horrified face, but hid it. You just assumed it was something he didn't do normally, and honestly, he should because Omigod! "Yes. What's a girl like you out in the middle of the night?"

Your mood got worse at the question, forced to replay the events of this evening. "I was on a case but…" The brunette laughed at your swift mood change. "I didn't know lawyers dressed like that." He referenced your bunny outfit and gave you his jacket. "Don't ask."

You quickly put it on, the winter was never your thing. "Do you want to tell me why you were sulking in that corner over there warming my keys?" He asked while the two of you walked to no place in particular. "Or is that related to.. all that." He pointed to your fluffy white bunny ears and stockings, making you scowl. "Love." You see his confused expression and explain everything to him. You can't help it! Whenever there's a hot person willing to listen, you suddenly become Doris Day!

"So you.. followed your ex to an ivy league school just to get him back? What type of rich romantic planet are you from?" You had a small feeling that the question was rhetorical, but you answered anyway, although you sounded more like you were asking yourself a question. "Malibu?"

"You'd rather come to boring old Oklahoma than to lie outside of some crystal clear pool giggling with your sorority friends?" How'd he know I'm in a sorority? "Tell me about it, I'm such an-" You looked at him, finally noticing the amused glint in his eyes. "Well excuse me for being such a dunce! Why are you here in the middle of the night then?" You glared at him, though you didn't really mean to be harsh. No matter what, you can't take your anger out on a stranger, rule number four hundred and fifty six of Delta Nu's handbook of Sisterhood.

"I work four jobs from twelve to nine, I just finished my first." You got another hidden laugh out of him for your shocked expression. "Why?!" He smiled fondly for a few minutes, thinking of something before answering you. "I.. I have kids at home. A single parent, if you could call it that." He said the last part mostly to himself. "I'm sorry, four jobs and kids at home to take care of?! I thought it was just a small chip on the shoulder. How do you do that?"

He shrugged his shoulders. "Well, first of all, I don't go to parties a lot," You rolled your eyes at the third remark about your out of place outfit. "It isn't a very good use of the time I have. And," He looked at you seriously, and you barely heard him talk because of you getting lost in his eyes. God, that sounds so cheesy. "Absolutely no spending hours on my hair.

You gasped in mock offense. "I do not spend hours on my hair! You're just jealous you don't wake up with dozens of beautiful locks like me." You showcase your hair like your in a conditioner commercial. "I know it'll all be worthwhile when I see my youngest brother smile at his college admission with pride." You grin at him wholeheartedly. "That's so sweet!" He shook his head. "No, it's that chip on my shoulder." That's not a chip, that's a boulder!

"Though I haven't gone to college, my advice to you would be to get a chip on your shoulder, or at least a sweater." You pouted at the joke. I hope we never meet again, if I have to hear about the one piece one more time.. "Take pride in the chance you've been given and be driven as hell." You nodded your head filled with determination, and walked off.

You came back fifteen seconds later, grinning shyly and laughing sheepishly. "So, uh," Your eyes became interested in the floor when you saw him getting into his truck. "I don't know where I am and, uh, I know you have somewhere to sleep and all so, uhm," He gave you an unamused expression, though it was more scolding than patronizing. "Are you seriously about to ask a complete stranger to bring you home with them?"

You twiddle your thumbs. "I mean, when you say it like that it sounds completely idiotic but," You pout and try to put what your thinking into words. "We trust each other, right? I mean I just told you my entire life story and you told me a vague description of your so..!" He still held a stern look on his face. "And what if I'm a serial killer who goes after pretty women dressed in Halloween costumes for court cases?"

"... You think I'm pretty?" He sighed at you deflecting the question. "Get in. But you're going to have to find your way back to your dorm yourself, alright?" You nodded your head, though you got lost in his eyes again. Turquoise just has to be the new pink! You thought dreamily while smiling at him.
