Snapshot #1: "Advent"

Summary:

Akihito decides to visit Asami’s work as a surprise on a foggy afternoon, but encounters some setbacks.

Part of a (slowly) growing collection of fluffy, bit of angst and sometimes smutty short stories centered around the couples in Finder Series.

Work Text:

Akihito hikes his foot onto the pedal before taking off into the city, opposite from the luxury apartment building where he’d been staying with Asami for a few months now. Kou did find it odd that he suddenly moved out of his place without much explanation, but aside from a few texts here and there throughout Aki’s stay at Asami’s, his friends have left it alone to let him do his thing. Which always seems to mean getting into trouble.

But, living with Asami hasn’t been too bad, Aki thinks. He stops over at a crosswalk as cars pass, sporting coats of dew as the traffic all try to make it home to their loved ones. But after Akihito got the usual midday text from Asami that he’ll be back late, Akihito’s decided to come to Asami, himself.

Though, he hadn’t said so when he replied to Asami’s text. He didn’t think of it until he tucked his phone back in his pocket before continuing to take snapshots of the model before him. While he’d continue with his work, Aki thought about the usual evening beside himself. After his gig, he hitched his bike off the racks- and without second thought, started cycling the other direction from his usual route back to the apartment.

Akihito realizes the cars have still been going, having waited to cross for several minutes now. A few students and a businessperson near him get antsy, the schoolgirls exchanging pursed smiles while the suit-clad man blankly glances at his watch.

“Have a good day, Asami-sama~ Work hard!”

“Hey, give me a kiss first.”

“What?! Hell no.”

“Alright… Saving them for tonight, I see.”

And like that, Asami walked off into the hall and turned the corner as Akihito stood there a bit dumbfounded. Was Asami feeling unwell? Did he actually- respect Aki’s refusal? Maybe he was just in a hurry and didn’t have time to start his usual teasing. No, Aki’s observed the man head to work in the late afternoon, if he pleased. Anything , if Asami so pleased…

Fog has dissolved the streetlights, though the flash of red turns green across from them as others walk past Aki, who snaps out of it and takes off onto the street. The brisk air pricks his skin as Aki regrets he didn’t take a jacket with him, but all the more reason to reach his destination faster.

But really, Asami wasn’t going anywhere. He’d stay parked in his seat till the AM as per usual, though Akihito wouldn’t admit that his rush to get to Asami’s workplace was out of excitement; if Asami had stolen a kiss from him that morning, Aki would outright deny it. Hell, he would’ve gone straight home from work like any other day.

Akihito wonders if he should turn back. Maybe it’s the gloomy weather, but a wave of some mildly ill feeling crashes over him now that he thinks about what he’s doing. But it’s too late; Aki spots the building past a veil of mist and blurred lights. He slows down, and looks to the concrete below to find specks of the incoming rain sprinkled along his path as he decides to head inside.

A whiff of leather and bergamot greets him as the scent fades into the lobby, dark walls projecting a soft gleam as rows of muted lights embed along where the wall and porcelain floor meet illuminate his path towards the elevators. He walks past the front desk as it shines a luminous white cast over Akihito’s passing shadow.

“Hello, sir. How can I help you?” The female clerk greets him with folded hands. Akihito turns to greet her with a faint blush while making a beeline to the elevators, though can’t help but awe at the thin curtain of water between two areca palm trees rolling down the wall behind her.

The echo of his footsteps across the lobby pick up pace once the secretary notices him, who storms over to intercept the boy while Aki makes a run for it.

Kirishima slows down as Akihito looks over his shoulder in puzzlement, then stops in his tracks as Suoh turns up ahead of him.

“Let me in, Suoh-san?” Aki asks with twinkling eyes.

“Not even a question!” Kirishima shakes his head as he walks in front of him. “The boss is extremely busy, he cannot be d i s tur bed, a nd…”

Akihito’s eyes would glaze over if it weren’t for Suoh’s hand trailing up the panel of elevator buttons. Really, they’re going to call backup on him? He was ready to leave without the hassle, anyway. Though he sees Suoh’s hand pass the phone button as his forefinger presses the one of the top floor.

Kirishima stops his speech and takes Akihito’s shoulder to escort him in the other direction as the elevator open. The secretary turns back around to the agape doors, then looks at Suoh, who gives him a deadpan stare as Kirishima glares back with an unreadable expression. The two have their little telepathic dispute as the elevator doors begin to close, and Aki takes his chance. He swoops under Kirishima and throws himself past the shutting doors, then whips around to see the secretary’s already walked off to the side as the beanstalk of a bodyguard utters something Akihito couldn’t decipher once the elevator takes off.

“I’ll phone in Asami-sama, then.” Kirishima grumbles as he goes over to the intercom. “Sir, Takaba Akihito is here to see you in your office…” After a few moments, he looks to Suoh from across the lobby. “Asami-sama, are you there?”

“Try his cell.” Suoh suggests.

“I did, his office.” Kirishima says. Suoh snorts as the front desk laughs. “Haha ok back to work. ”

The elevator stops before reaching the floor of Asami’s office. Akihito scans the panel of buttons in a slight panic, wondering if there are more of Asami’s men he’d have to cross first to reach him. The doors open, and he gawks upon seeing Asami return a muted look of surprise.

“Asami!” Akihito tries to sheathe his smile. “I just wanted to, well say ‘hi’ is all.”

“ … Hi, Takaba.”

Asami juts a hand at the closing door before joining Akihito in the elevator, and silence erupts between them as Asami finds the top floor had already been pressed.

“You know about this floor?” He asks Akihito.

“What? I thought it was to your office?”

“No.”

“Better not be some sort of sex dungeon.” The boy mutters.

“We’re going to the roof.”

“So… Sex ‘attic’?” Asami shakes his head with a chuckle. “It’s raining, you know.”

“Is it? Well, we’ll be fine.” The elevator doors open as gilded eyes turn to the boy, who steps out first and onto the vast patio. Akihito braces for rain, but looks up to see a clear dome roof above them as Asami strides past.

“We hold meetings up here, sometimes.” He says, walking past a deck of chairs tucked into a matching hardwood conference table. “I come here to watch the city, every now and then.”

Yellow and red bromeliads, peach kalanchoes, and white asylums speckled around prickly succulents border the patio as Akihito walks over to admire them. Asami himself goes up to the ledge railing and rests his arms along the bars as he watches the traffic below.

“Who waters these?” Akihito goes up to the ledge railing to meet up with Asami.

“Take a wild guess.” He responds. Akihito pictures the secretary gardening up here and wonders if he likes it. He then looks down to see the intersection he’d been waiting at to come see Asami just a block away; he can even see Asami’s apartment building from far off, as the sun dips below skyscrapers and pierces orange through the fog.

“I’m glad you came here.”

Akihito turns to him with wide eyes. Though Asami remains staring out towards the city, leaving it at that.

“ … Y-yeah, me too.”

Asami chuckles, then slips his hand over the small of Aki’s back as he gently rubs it before drawing Akihito closer, his other hand in his pocket.

“What about that kiss?”

Akihito glances up at him, then hides his face in Asami’s chest as his cheeks sweep pink. He feels a hand glide over his neck before caressing his feathery blonde hair, and Akihito looks into those gilded eyes again, the sunset now cast across Asami’s gaze to shimmer unto his.

“Okay…” Akihito murmurs, and his eyes waver down to Asami’s lips before closing.
