Chapter Text
Not long after Dante and Vergil were born, Malaina had begun to take an active role as a guardian over the family. During the day she’d check in on everyone and make sure that everyone was healthy then it was off to patrol while Sparda spent time with his sons. It was important to her that Sparda be there with his children along with Eva. Something that she didn’t have and wouldn’t dare wish on anyone.
This lead to her taking to performing the evening patrols while everyone else was asleep. The fallen angel made it somewhat of a routine to stop in and check on both boys to make sure they were doing alright. In case one or both were hungry or just needed some attention. This way Eva and Sparda could get their well deserved rest.
Her routine continued even when the boys were no longer infants. Though seeing if they were hungry wasn’t exactly what she was checking on at that point in their lives. It was mostly to make sure Dante didn’t have hidden cookies or other sugary snacks and to ensure Vergil was going to bed and not staying up reading.
It seemed to almost be a way of being able for the eldest twin to say goodnight. At least that’s what she’d assumed. Vergil would simply say that he was too intrigued by what he’d been reading and lost track of time.
Proof of the former would come when one night, Malaina didn’t show. “Vergil? What time is it?” Dante sat up in bed and slipped a cookie from his not so secret hiding place. Maybe by doing this he’d be able to summon their nightly guest.
A glance to the clock revealed it to be almost 11:30 pm. “She should have come in and scolded us by now Dante.”
Both twins suddenly bolted up from their beds, their eyes wide when a particular scent hit their noses. “Blood” both said at the same time. Vergil being a bit faster, told Dante to stay there and he’d go check it out. Dante hadn’t wanted to have his brother leave him, but knew it would be easier for Vergil to speed over, get a glance and return.
That’s just was Vergil did. Well sort of. The eldest twin quickly made his way to Malaina’s room. The door was open so he slipped inside and looked around. He saw Malaina curled up in a ball on her bed. His senses told him no one else was around so he motioned for Dante to come, his pale blue eyes wide with shock. Both twins then entered the room and it was Dante who called out, “Malaina? What’s wrong?” As they got closer, they could see the wing that hung at an awkward angle along with the healing gash on her arm.
Malaina turned her head to look and see who’d come in. She was relieved and horrified that it was both boys. “You don’t need to see this my little devils. Go back to bed I,” she inhaled sharply from the pain of trying to move her badly broken wing, “I will heal and be fine.”
Vergil shook his head and moved closer as did Dante. “It’s broken. Your wing. It won’t heal right if you don’t set it first.” He remembered when he and Dante had been play fighting.
Dante and Vergil had been practicing their swordsmanship in the yard under the watchful eye of their father and Malaina. As they were told, when one of them was done, they were to toss their wooden sword to the ground and step back with their hands up. Vergil had done just that, but Dante hadn’t wanted it to be over. His brother launched himself at him, knocking him to the ground with a crunch.
Malaina rushed over to see what had happened while Dante was disciplined by Sparda. “I’m fine” Vergil insisted, showing his wrist that had been injured. Already it was in the beginning stages of healing due to his demon blood. But it wasn’t sitting right.
“No Vergil, it’s not fine. Your wrist was broken and now your body’s healing it as is.” She sighed and placed her hand on the boy’s shoulder and sat down on the ground beside him. “I have to re - break it or else it won’t heal properly. On the count of three okay?” She began to count. “One… two…” she then snapped his wrist before counting to three.
Vergil didn’t cry out though tears did fill his eyes. “You didn’t count to three” he hissed.
“You’re right, I didn’t. The pain is worse when you expect it. I am sorry. Come here my little devil.” She motioned for Vergil to come sit in her lap. She gently wrapped her arms around him and started purring just for him to hear. As she did, she whispered a healing spell to help speed up the healing of Vergil’s wrist.
Malaina gave a soft chuckle and nodded. “Care to help me since you’re here?”
Dante nodded and looked to Vergil who did the same before they both climbed onto the bed.Malaina told them how to pull and where to push to get the wing back into place. “On three?” She nodded and braced herself. “One, two,” Vergil pulled the joint out of socket then Dante pushed it back in properly.
“Thank you my little devils. It was much easier having your help.” Malaina could have done it herself or she’d have gone to Sparda to be able to help her. Eva wouldn’t have the strength to break her wing given the advanced stages of healing that it would be in. She was actually surprised that the boys could do so with relative ease. What surprised her even further was when Vergil came closer and hugged her gently before settling at her side. She smiled and ran her fingers through the boy’s hair. A further surprise was when Dante joined his brother but lay on the other side.
They looked to one another and started to attempt to purr for her. At first it was mainly low growls that soon picked up in strength. Malaina had thought it might turn into a fighting match but they both just continued to do their best until satisfied with the purring.
It wasn’t long after that which all three of them ended up falling asleep. Malaina was on her back with Vergil tucked into her right side and Dante on her left. With her wings now healing, she was able to wrap them around the sleeping boys to provide them with warmth and protection. This was how the trio were found in the morning by a pair of relieved parents.
