Chapter Text
It was always go big or go home for this small team of swindlers, but eventually that all had to come to an end. The biggest reason was the marriage of Laurent and Makoto, Alpha and Omega. Who shortly after getting married, welcomed their son Maki into the world.
They moved to a small town in California where they planned to raise their son together, but he was only a couple of months old when Laurent told Makoto he wanted back in.
“Aren’t we getting a little old for this? I mean, I just delivered a baby not too long ago and you want to get back in?” Makoto said, standing in the living room holding Maki after he had changed him.
“It’s just this one job. It’s pretty big and isn’t just for some fun or money. It’s a pretty big deal. So why not? I’m not asking you to come along. The others are already on board.” Laurent explained to which earned him a scowl from Makoto.
“So you already talked to everyone but me, hoping that would persuade me to let you go? We have a kid now. Haven’t we talked about this?”
“Will you hear me out about what our plans are before you shoot them down?” Laurent asked, sitting on their large sectional and gesturing to Makoto to come sit next to him.
The Omega rolled his eyes before taking a seat next to his husband, but not before handing Maki to him.
“He falls asleep faster with you anyway.” He grumbled, watching as Laurent held Maki in the crook of his arm, where the baby managed to fall asleep quickly and soundly, but only with Laurent.
Maki, although looking almost exactly like Makoto, managed to have Laurent’s unique eye color. He was so small when he was born they were worried he wouldn’t make it. But he was strong and now Makoto spent everyday taking immense care of their son… who still liked Laurent better.
He cried less, ate better, and fell asleep faster with Laurent than with Makoto, who spent almost every waking moment with him.
“So? What is this big gig you’re already getting the team together for?” Makoto asked, knowing Laurent wasn’t going to take no for an answer so he might as well listen. It wasn’t even about the money. It was about the rush from pulling off a huge job that made it worth it.
Makoto didn’t blame him. That feeling, while scary, was incredible. He just wanted to know what made him want to go back after talking about being done and settling down to raise a family though.
“It’s a little complicated.” Laurent smiled while looking down at Maki who was already slowly shutting his eyes.
“If all goes well, we’ll have a huge payout.”
“Like we’ll be set for life this time?” Makoto asked.
“And you won’t have to work?”
“Yes, but I’m sure you’re aware our work isn’t always safe.”
Makoto glared at his husband.
“And I’m sure you’re aware that you have a kid now who I don’t want to raise alone.”
“I know.” Laurent said. His expression became very serious after that and Makoto knew this was a rare occurrence.
“The job isn’t just for the money though. It’s a little more serious than that.”
“Okay… what is it then? You’re making me nervous.” Makoto said, sitting up straight against the couch, preparing himself for what Laurent was going to say.
“Omega trafficking. We heard some rumors about it. They kidnap omegas off the streets and from their homes. Sometimes in broad daylight. They move around a lot and usually sell through online buyers from other countries. Soon though, they’ll be holding a live auction and we plan to be there.”
Makoto felt sick to his stomach. He’s seen enough human trafficking for one lifetime and didn’t think he could handle seeing how fucked some of the people in the world were anymore. He wanted to raise Maki in a world where he’d never have to experience these things. Which Makoto realized was why Laurent was so passionate about this. He could tell.
“Who’s we?” Makoto asked, not sure what else to say but was confused when Laurent seemed to hesitate.
“Me… and your dad.”
It was an odd situation. Makoto didn’t hate his dad like he once did, but he also doesn’t think he’ll ever think of him as a dad again. He came to their wedding and was at the hospital when Makoto gave birth to Maki, but he knew it was because of Laurent.
Laurent asked him to be there and Makoto agreed, but if it wasn’t for him Makoto didn’t plan on see his father ever again.
“We’ve heard about these rumors for a while so he’s been gathering intel and sharing it with the others. They’re all on board, but I told them I’d talk to you once we knew more.”
Makoto wasn’t sure what to say. He didn’t know how he felt about it. Laurent seemed to have been planning this for a while and Makoto had no idea. He was so busy with Maki who wasn’t even 3 months old yet that he didn’t know if Laurent was keeping it a secret or Makoto just hadn’t been paying attention.
“Makoto.” Laurent said after his husband had been silent for a while.
“Have you been planning this since before I became pregnant?” He asked finally.
“No. We found out a few months ago.”
“Were you always planning to get back in?”
Laurent was trying to read Makoto but it was hard. The omega was staring off into the distance and wasn’t making eye contact with Laurent at all.
“We’re not doing this for the money-“
“That’s not what I asked.” Makoto said firmly.
“I asked if you were always planning on getting back in. Without the reason. Without it being because of what you’re doing it for. Were you always planning on doing this? Tell me honestly.”
Makoto finally looked at him but his face was dead serious and it worried Laurent and little bit to see him like this.
“I… I don’t know. I know we said we were done but this is something-“
“After this. Say you all did this and rescued those omegas and took those people down and got your big payout. Then what? Do I just wait for you to find another case to get yourself tangled up in because you can’t resist the rush?”
Laurent didn’t know what to say. He knew they talked about being done before they got married and that it was really time to settle and not get involved in this anymore. But he didn’t know why he couldn’t seem to think he’d actually be able to give this life up. He knew marrying Makoto and having a baby together really helped him realize he couldn’t get back in. But after hearing these rumors about this omega trafficking ring and that soon an auction would be taking place so close to them. He had to do something.
Not just for the omegas but for his as well. It was so close and he was worried for Makoto and their baby that he couldn’t just sit by and do nothing. It was after this though that Makoto was probably more upset about.
However, Laurent didn’t know what he’d do after this, if it even went well. He didn’t see himself having an office job or something boring the rest of his life to support his family. He needed something and this is all he knew.
“I can’t answer you right now.” Laurent answered as honestly as he could.
“But I know I want to do this one. I can’t turn this down.”
He waited again for Makoto to say something. He had looked away again and seemed to be thinking about what Laurent just said before finally standing up a few minutes later.
He reached down and took Maki, who was sound asleep out of Laurent’s arms and started walking him to his room.
“I’m going to put Maki to bed. Do what you want. I can’t stop you if this is what you want to do. You’ve never been great at telling me everything you’re doing anyway.”
“Makoto.” Laurent said, standing up to walk towards Makoto but stopped when Makoto turned to him and had a stern look on his face.
“Just do what you want. You already told everyone anyway so why stop just because of what I say.” He went to walk away again, leaving Laurent to feel defeated and that he got no where with Makoto, but the omega did stop one more time, keeping his back to Laurent when he said,
“I’m glad we never did what we talked about. Probably better if we never do it at all.” And Laurent’s heart sunk at those words.
