He’s My Everything

Summary:

What happens when you have to watch the man who means everything to you and your son have his heart stopped by a psychopath? It’s not fair. Neither Eddie or Buck did anything to deserve this. It was them who was investigating Jonah.

-The fic where we see Eddie become an emotional wreck over Buck instead of Buck over Eddie.

Notes:

So I saw some fun thoughts on twitter saying what if Buck and Eddie had been in Hen and Chim’s place in Hero Complex and then went farther to say what if Eddie had to watch Buck get his heart stopped. So. Here we are. An alternate take for Hero Complex.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

My Everything

This was not a situation Eddie Diaz ever wanted to find himself in. Restrained to a chair as he watched a psychopath kill and revive one of the most important people in his life

“No. No, please! Stop! Buck! Buck please…” Eddie felt his chest tighten. He could barely breath. Seeing Buck’s heart stop, his world felt like it was being ripped apart. He felt tears, hot against his cheeks.

“I’d rather have had you on this table, his girlfriend was the one who tipped me off after all. Butttt I ran into you first so here we are.”

“You don’t have to do this. Please, please stop.” His eyes barely left Buck.

“Well, Taylor freaking Kelly didn’t have to look into my past either! Yet, she did. That crossed a line. I ONLY wanted to save lives. Yet you meddlesome 118 do gooders just…couldn’t help yourselves.”

“How’s injecting healthy patients with a drug that stops their heart helping?! You’re no better than an angel of death!”

“That’s NOT true! I save them!”

“Until you don’t!”

“Shut up! Perhaps…another round? To prove my point.” Jonah approached Buck again, syringe in hand.

“No! No. Please, no, don’t.” Eddie’s not sure he’s ever sounded so desperate.

“Ya know. Everyone said you two were…close. Just how close are we talking? How much does he mean to you?” Jonah hovered the syringe over the line he had in Buck.

“Everything! Ok. He means everything to me and to my son! Don’t…don’t do this. I love him! You don’t have to –” Eddie was interrupted as he injected Buck with the drug.

“Everything? That’s interesting.”

“NO! Buck!” Eddie sobbed, “Evan! Please, hold on…” This second time took too long for Eddie’s liking. He had forgotten how to breath.

“You’re a monster! Evan…Evan …please…be ok.”

“You’re a fool. You can’t deny the feeling of power that comes when you save a life. From the adulation you receive.” It appeared the universe took pity on Eddie, during Jonah’s monologue he noticed Bucks hand twitch. Eyes flutter open. He just had to keep him distracted a little while longer.

“The feeling. The feeling we should hang on to isn’t the ego boost, it’s the fact we helped someone that couldn’t help themselves. We are there during someone’s worst moments. It’s not about us.” Eddie had a mantra going in his head, don’t draw attention to Buck.

“That’s rich coming from a former army medic. Yeah I did my homework too. On all of you.”

“Evidently not enough.” Eddie took a a shuddering breath. “Since you were still stupid enough to play god around some of the smartest people I’ve ever met.”

That got Jonah’s attention. “I. Am not. Stupid!” Eddie braced himself for incoming punch. That would bruise later. “I. Am a hero. And that’s what I’ll tell everyone when I heroically tried to save you and your everything from a burning building! I –” He didn’t get a chance to finish that sentence, Buck had injected Jonah with one of the needles left on the table. He stumbled his way to Eddie to undo his restraints.

“Buck! Buck..” Eddie started to hyperventilate, fresh tears staining his cheeks. Eddie embraced Buck the moment he was free, not leaving an inch of space. He relaxed against Eddie.

“Eddie…Eddie I’m…I’m ok. I think. Did he stop my…?”

“Heart. Yeah.” Eddie choked out another sob.

Buck gave a dry laugh, “You think…there’s a…record for…department injuries?”

Eddie chuckled, “Not funny.”

“You’re still…laughing.”

That’s how the others found them, laughing and crying. Hen checking their vitals, Athena handcuffing Jonah. Both men found it very satisfying watching Bobby take a few shots at the psychopath. Both will have to spend a night or two in the hospital. At least they got a shared room.

“Chris-”

“Is still with Karen. You two just get some rest.” Hen left no room for negotiation.

Eddie let out breath. He has never been happier that Chris was at a sleep over.

The 118 all took turns fawning over them. Though one person was suspiciously absent.

“So. Ah. I didn’t see Taylor at all tonight.”

“Ah. Yeah. Well…I don’t expect you will…”

Eddie turned fully to look at him now. “Why?”

“She…she ah…well. She took the conversation Hen, Chim, and I had. That we included her in on, off the record, and made it a breaking story. And that’s why you were…we were…I ah. I just finished leaving a not so nice voicemail when Jonah showed up.”

“Not so nice?” Eddie raised his eyebrows.

“I broke up with her.”

“Buck…I-”

“No. It’s fine. She Ah. Work is what’s important to her. And it’s not like we were without problems anyway. It’s. It’s a decision I should have made awhile ago. Just sucks now that we moved in together…”

“You’re always welcome with the Diaz’s, you know.”

Buck’s smile lightened some of the tightness in Eddie’s chest.

“Yeah. I may have to take you up on that.” Buck paused, his expression more serious. “So. Um. I’m pretty sure I didn’t hallucinate Jonah say…you meaning you Eddie and your everything meaning me.”

Eddie pointedly looked away.

“Eds…?”

“This probably isn’t the time to unpack that.”

“Then when? I-”

“Evan please. I promise we can have that…conversation. But for now can I just…we just…take this moment. I thought…” Eddie’s voice broke thinking about how he almost lost Buck.

Eddie was still not looking at Buck so he very much jumped when he felt a warm hand grab his.

“Eds…I’m sorry.”

“No. You don’t have anything to be sorry about. It wasn’t your-”

“I know. But…I also know it was hard. Trust me, Eddie, I KNOW.”

“Right. We’re a pair, huh.”

Buck laughed, “Yeah we are. But we’re at our best together. Even at our worst.”

That got a chuckle out of Eddie. “Yeah.”

Notes:

I might continue this story at a later date. The continuation, the talk that Buck wants to have. But for now hope you enjoyed this little alternate storyline ^-^
