Envious

Summary:

At Loid and Yor's wedding, the only guests who are anything but happy for them are Yuri and Fiona.

Notes:

Had this idea in my head for a while and wrote down some parts a few weeks ago. Finally got around to finishing it!

Work Text:

As much as Yuri hated to admit it, there is no longer anything he can do about Loid getting together with his sister. When Yor announced her wedding date, Yuri finally wove the white flag and gave up trying to break them up.

On day of the wedding, Yuri forces himself to smile throughout the event for his sister's sake. Well, perhaps forced is too strong of a word. He genuinely is happy that Yor found someone that she can live with for the rest of her life. Though he will never, ever feel like anyone deserves his sister, he supposes Loid Forger is the closest thing to that amongst the living. So at least 1% of Yuri's smile is genuine.

As Loid and Yor kiss at the altar, Yuri averts his gaze towards the other side of the aisle to spot the only other person here that isn't in a congratulatory mood for the bride and groom. He only knows this because he has worked with her for the past few months in trying to split them apart.

Fiona Frost.

Their first meeting was months ago, when Yuri was caught by the aforementioned woman while observing Loid. She offered to work together since they had the same end goal. He obliged and regretted it soon afterwards. He's never had a more insufferable partner.

To the rest of the crowd, there is nothing wrong. She stands straight, claps her hands, and her face is as impassive as always. She notices his gaze and meets his eyes not long after. It's only for a few seconds at most, but Yuri reads and understands all the pain in her eyes. She seems to come to the same realization when she looks away first.

The night concludes with fanfare and excitement to everyone except for Yuri and Fiona. He decides he's finally had enough and gets ready to leave at the same time as the guests who are not-too-close to the bride and groom. He gives what feels like the millionth fake thank you to Loid, tightly embraces his sister while crying, and then leaves. Before fully stepping out, he tries to spot his figurative partner-in-crime amongst the remaining crowd, but she is nowhere to be seen. When he gets to the parking lot, he sees her unmoved car.

He sighs. He's come to know various things about her, one of which is that she is a master of hiding her emotions until she is alone. And then, she lets it all out.

At any given wedding, there are only a few places that meet her criteria before she breaks her facade: privacy, no foot traffic, and no alcohol. The only place that fits that description here is behind the chapel. He makes his way there and sees her bawling while sitting on a rock with her head in her arms.

He calls out to her. "Hey."

"...I don't want to talk right now. To anyone." She sobs.

"Come on, we knew this was bound to happen when our last attempt failed."

"That doesn't make me feel any better. What about you? You seem fine."

"Of course it's killing me, but my sister chose him of her own free will," Yuri starts. "And he chose her, so I suppose that he doesn't have the worst taste."

A light chuckle escapes her lips and she finally looks up a little. "You're getting soft."

"Yeah, well that's your fault. You made me see some good in him."

"Likewise. She is also not as unworthy as I first thought. Still is, just not as much. " She rubs her eyes and stabilizes her breathing. "I still will never think that she deserves him. And you will never think that he deserves her. Regardless of our feelings, I suppose we both have to live with it and move on." She then unsuccessfully tries to wipe the mucus from her nose.

Yuri digs into his pocket and pulls out something for her. "Here's a napkin I snagged from the party. I thought you might need this."

She tentatively reaches out and takes it. "...Thanks." She sends him a small smile. It's the first time that he's seen that and it distracts him for a few moments.

He thinks about what their next step should be. "Do you want to go back inside?"

"Hell no." She immediately answers. She scans him top-to-bottom for a few moments. "Let's go to the hotel and do it. I need a distraction."

It takes him a few seconds to piece together what she's saying. "When you say do it, you're saying what I think you're saying, right? You're talking about-"

"Don't say it out loud."

"Alright…" He says, wondering if this is the right thing to do. It's true they could both use something. Alcohol isn't enough for tonight. She's also probably the person he's spent the most time with since he met her. Work and his obsession with his sister have prevented his long and short-term relationships from ending in anything short of catastrophe.

Though there were many times where she got on his nerves for not following orders or being stubborn, there were times where it saved them. Even when Yuri gave up, she still fought until the end. And yes, he sometimes found these traits of hers mildly hot. This may be another disaster. Who's he kidding, it probably will be a disaster if it doesn't end after tonight. This has disaster written all over it. But part of him still wants to see where this goes. And that part of him is what ultimately prevails. "If you're sure about this. Are we going to do it in my room? I'm pretty sure it's bigger."

"No way." She glares at him and he takes it as a sign that he made a mistake. "Are you out of your mind? Your room is right next to theirs. I don't want us to do it while hearing them doing their thing."

Yuri pictures that scenario and it greatly repulses him as well. He presses his temples to erase what he just imagined. "Ugh, you're right. I don't know what I was thinking… Your room, then?"

"Yeah." She then puts her hands on the rock to get herself standing again. "Let's go."

"As demanding as ever." He rolls his eyes.

"Shut up. I'm still mad."

"Yeah, yeah. Whatever, I'll drive." He begins walking ahead of her to get his car.

"Wait a second." He hears her say and he stops.

He slowly turns around to ask what's wrong. Just as he's about to face her, he feels his collar being pulled as she smashes her lips against his.

"...Thanks again." She says as their lips depart.

"Hmph." Is what he says, but on the inside he can feel his heart beating in a way that is only comparable to when Yor gives him a hug. It does feel slightly different and he's not sure why. All he knows about it is it doesn't feel bad. "No problem." He mutters as he slips his hand to hers and intertwines their fingers. Maybe the future isn't as bleak as he thought.
