Chapter 1: Feeding time

Chapter Text

It was a peaceful day in Isla Nublar, the sun shined brightly accompanied by a gentle rain that managed to cool down the island, but while the tourists enjoyed their day gazing at the dinosaurs someone else in the raptor's paddock worried beyond belief for the youngest raptor.

"C'mon Charlie, you need to eat," He tried to get the tiny creature to take hold of the bottle, but the raptor remained uninterested even if it was sick from not eating.

"I know you don't like the formula but I can't let you starve," He said as he gently lifted the raptor's head to try to open her mouth to eat.

"Just try it, I promise you'll like it," He assured as the raptor grumbled.

At this (F/N) sighed but still not ready to give up used his free hand to take the bottle's lid off and inserted his fingers to coat it in the mix.

He looked at his fingers doubtfully about what he was going to do for a moment but shook his head dismissing the thought as he spread the liquid in Charlie's snout.

This obtained a positive result as she began licking it off, when Charlie finished cleaning herself she became more interested in the bottle of food having liked its flavor.

"Alright girl, just let me..." (F/N) said as the little raptor wiggled in her restraints.

(F/N) quickly put the lid back on the feeding bottle before offering it to Charlie who took a hold of it quickly and began sucking avidly.

He smiled relieved that he had finally gotten Charlie to eat as he saw the little raptor finish the bottle in record time finally realizing how hungry she was, after Charlie finished the bottle (F/N) took the second bottle and offered it, this bottle received the same treatment as Charlie was drinking it down quickly.

"Good job rookie," A voice came from the speakers.

"Told you she didn't like the flavor," (F/N) smiled.

"When you're finished, let her out of the restraints and get out quickly," Owen's voice instructed.

"And remember-"

"Don't turn your back to her, yeah I got it," (F/N) interrupted as he rolled his eyes.

"Don't get cheeky rookie," Owen's voice answered with humor on his voice.

When Charlie finished the bottle (F/N) quickly put it back on the bag and let Charlie down as he carefully took the restraints off.

"Alright girl, I'll be back in a few hours to check on you, don't do anything I wouldn't," (F/N) said as he made his way to the door without turning his back on the raptor who remained in the ground looking at him before (F/N) left the small room.

(F/N) sighed as he left the bag with the bottles on the table for someone to clean and went to where Owen and Barry were.

Both were waiting for him on the catwalks, Barry was smiling as Owen gave him a serious look.

"I'll give it to you, getting Charlie to eat is quite the feat," Owen began as (F/N) remained silent and anxious.

"Told you he knows what he's doing," Barry said with pride emanating from every pore.

"I guess..." Owen said with a tense silence following.

"I'm not a fan of hiring kids who have no experience with animals," Owen began.

"So you better get used to the heat and smell," He finally said with a smile as he offered his hand to shake.

(F/N)'s eyes widened as he smiled brightly and shook his hand vigorously.

"Thank you so much, I promise you won't regret it," (F/N) thanked.

"I better not, Barry will give you your schedule and you better be here in time," Owen said as Barry swung his arm around (F/N)'s arms leaving them both alone.

"You did good kid, I knew you could get him to like you," Barry congratulated.

"Thanks,"

Timeskip

"(F/N) is the food ready?" One of the employees yelled from the catwalk and (F/N) sighed as he carried two large buckets.

"Yup, I'm taking it to them now!" He answered as he poured the mix of nutrients with the meat into their feeding area.

"Ok, tell me when your out," He answered.

"C'mon Leon, help let's hurry, the girls must be hungry," (F/N) said with a smile at the man who followed her.

They hurried to feel the feeding bowls in each of the grooming stations before hurriedly leaving and exiting the area.

"We're out, you can let them in!" (F/N) signaled, and soon the raptors were let into the area, the four making a beeline for their food, (F/N) remained for a moment watching them gauge down their food, but when Charlie stopped eating and took her food to blue (F/N) sighed

"Great, I guess it didn't work," (F/N) said in defeat as he made his way to the catwalks where Owen and Barry stood.

"What didn't work?" Leon asked.

"I've been trying to get Charlie to eat her food and not give it to blue but nothing is working," (F/N) explained before making his way to Owen and Barry.

"Charlie is giving her food to blue again," (F/N) informed.

"Should I feed her separately tonight again?"

"No, she started giving more of her food to Blue when we started that, it's not working," Owen shook his head trying to think of a solution.

"Maybe we'll need to separate them all during feeding time," (F/N) said.

"It would better not since it may separate them as pack...." Owen then sighed.

"I'll try to come up with something, right now we can't do anything, let's wrap it up for today," Owen said as he signaled for everyone to start wrapping everything up.

(F/N) stood there for a moment before sighing in defeat and starting to walk off before he noticed a jeep pulling off in the entrance of the paddock, and groaned knowing who it was.

"Owen!" (F/N) called out as he pointed at the jeep for Owen to look, noticing how he sighed before walking over.

(F/N) wanting to avoid any contact with Hoskins went to pick up and wash the bucket he used for the food.

"C'mon Leon, let's go clean our mess," (F/N) pulled him away from the railing where he had been watching the raptors.

As they cleaned up the area the raptors stared at them for a moment before busying themselves with something else as usual.

"You've been here for while right?" Leon asked.

"Yup, almost since the start of the project," (F/N) explained.

"I guess you know a lot from them then," Leon pointed at the raptors and (F/N) chuckled.

"Yeah, it may not seem like i t but they all have their own likes and dislikes and unique personalities we need to know how to navigate each one,"

"Like what?"

"Well, Blue is the leader, but she is very chaotic but still caring to her sisters, Delta on the other side is much more calm but can be easily distracted with oreo cookies,"

"Don't ask how we learned that," (F/N) interrupted before Leon could ask.

"Then there's Echo, she hates everyone, like even Owen has trouble handling her, she does bother her sisters from time to time but still cares a lot, like when she alerted us when Delta got her leg stuck in the mechanism of one of the gates,"

"And lastly Charlie, the youngest, she respects Blue a lot, she even gives her food to Blue from time to time, but the problem with this is that she is a very picky..spoiled eater,"

"I've had to figure many combinations of food for her to even eat...that's actually how I got my spot here,"

"Really?" Leon asked in awe.

"Yup, my brother actually told Owen to give me a chance when Charlie stopped eating when she was little," (F/N) explained and they soon fell into a comfortable silence, but when one of the raptors made a small sound pulling (F/N)'s attention back to them he worries returned.

(F/N) looked at the raptors and sighed worriedly.

*Charlie can't keep skipping on her meals, maybe I can try to...* He tried to think of something he hadn't tried already but as he scrubbed the bucket lost in his own thought he didn't notice Barry walking towards him followed by another man until Barry called his name.

"(F/N),"

(F/N) almost jumped before turning around trying to mask his surprise at the presence of the three men.

" Barry, is something the matter?" (F/N) asked.

"Hoskins noticed the increase in productivity in the raptors and wanted to know how it happened," Barry explained and (F/N) lifted an eyebrow in confusion

"I mean, nothing out of the ordinary, wouldn't the reports tell you that?" (F/N) asked confused but kept cleaning the buckets.

"That's what I tried to tell them, but..." Barry shrugged as he sent a look at the man beside him.

"The increase is much higher than what we had calculated, so much it's clear it wasn't a miscalculation," The man spoke.

"Oh...I mean, the diet instructions we were sent were good but we ran out of half of those ingredients way too fast, so I replaced them with other things that offered more nutrients, maybe that's why?" (F/N) offered as he put the buckets to dry and turned completely to Barry and the man.

"You're saying you changed the raptor's diet?" The man asked.

"I mean, I just replaced some things for others that were more beneficial in smaller quantities,"

"I wasn't informed of more tests being made, when was this?" The man asked.

"Like six months ago, but it did take me a while to get the best mix, so you could say eight months," (F/N) explained.

The man wrote it in the notebook he had been carrying until he froze for a moment before looking at (F/N) directly.

"You did this?" (F/N) nodded slowly.

"Without the help of any of my scientists or actual testing in the labs?" He asked.

"Yeah?"

"But what does that have to do with-"

"I need you to write down the exact ingredients and quantities you are using here," The man interrupted as he almost shoved the notebook on (F/N)'s chest.

(F/N) gave Barry a look but he simply nodded, so (F/N) quickly wrote it down.

After (F/N) gave the notebook back the man turned around and walked away quickly, (F/N) gave Barry a confused look before he went after the man.

"That was weird," (F/N) muttered as he looked at Leon who simply nodded also confused by the interaction.
