Hello Again

Summary:

Shizune's back in Konoha ready to see Tsunade take the title of Hokage. While exploring the village, she runs into an old friend.

Work Text:

Konoha hadn’t changed a bit since her last visit. All of the shops she once visited were still open and booming with business. The Hokage’s residence looked the same, and even the training field just outside the Jonin accommodations seemed to be unchanged.

That was the one place Shizune had expected to change, but she could imagine even the best Jonin in Konoha would want to go easy on this particular field.

After all, if a Jutsu went a bit too overboard it put the Jonin Accommodations at risk, and no one would live down being the person that took down everyone’s home.

Making her way through the streets, she wondered if Tsunade-sama would like something from one of the shops. After listening to the elders telling her about the job she was taking on, she was bound to be hungry.

Angry and hungry.

It would probably be best for everyone if Shizune provided food before Tsunade-sama was released into the village.

“You seem lost.” a familiar voice called out to her, prompting Shizune to turn and see who it was interrupting her thoughts.

The answer she received was not one she wanted.

“Kakashi,” It had been years since she saw the Silver-haired jerk. Not enough years, in her opinion. “You’re still around.”

“Too stubborn to die,” there’s a cheerfulness in his voice that catches her off guard. It doesn’t match at all with the Hatake Kakashi she knew. “Are you looking for something in particular?”

“Food.” Searching for an escape, she sighed when she failed to see one. No Asuma or Kurenai, and not even Gai was anywhere to be seen. “Tsunade-sama is in meetings and I think it would be best if I picked up something for her to eat once she’s done.”

“A wise idea.” he laughed. An honest real laugh. Was this even the same man at all? Was it legal for Kakashi to laugh?

Surely there were rules he was breaking by doing that, and rules were important to Kakashi.

“I… I should go,” this was too weird for her. She needed to find someone she trusted and fast. They could tell her what was wrong with Kakashi. “It was nice seeing you again.”

Before she could leave though, Kakashi stepped into the spot at her side. “I think she’d appreciate some sushi,” he suggested. “And how long has it been since you had Dango?”

Dango?

Now she knew he was an imposter. Kakashi never liked Dango when they were younger.

“I might stop by…”

“I’ll buy,” he decided, smiling her way. “It’s the least I can do. Jiraiya-sama said Naruto was a bit of a … handful.”

That was putting it lightly.

“And what does that have to do with you?”

“Well, Naruto is my student.” Impossible. As much as she could complain about Kakashi’s attitude, it was the complete opposite of Naruto’s. There’s no way he had a student who was so brash and loud.

“Who are you?”

Kakashi blinked. “Umm, Kakashi.”

“Don’t lie to me,” she waved a finger in front of his face, narrowing her eyes when he stared at her with a blank expression. “The Kakashi I know is a stickler for rules and a little jerk.”

“I-“

“Not to mention he’s arrogant,” she huffed. “I mean, he doesn’t like praise but he certainly thinks he’s better than everyone.”

“Shizune-“

“You may be Handsome like Kakashi, but that mask is covering lies. So tell me, imposter. Who are you really?”

He stood there for a moment just staring at her, processing everything she had said. Then, with a shake of his head, he reached up and lifted his headband.

The sharingan was undeniable. No one could copy a Sharingan so perfectly that it's Tomoe’s spun-on command.

This was Hatake Kakashi.

The real deal.

And she had just insulted him to his face.

“So, he lowered his headband back over his eye, smiling while Shizune stared at him with bewilderment. “Arrogant?”

She could already tell that he was never going to let her live this moment down, and honestly, she deserved it.

“When did you-“

“Get a personality change?” She nodded, still struggling to process the complete 180 that his personality had taken in her absence. “Oh, a few years ago.”

“And I-“

“Yep.”

Tsunade-sama was going to laugh at her if she ever heard about this.

“So,” Kakashi smiled. “Lunch?”

Lunch. After the discovery and disaster, she had just gone through in the last five minutes, Lunch sounded good.

“You still buying the dango?” She asked.

“Mmm, well… I hear I’m a bit of a jerk,” his words hit like one of Tsunade-sama’s punches. Except this shot was aimed right at her pride. “But I think I can spare a few Ryo for a pretty lady.”

Kakashi turned his back to her and started to walk, stopping when she didn’t immediately start following him. “Well?” He glanced back at her. “Are you coming, Pretty lady?”

Konoha hadn’t changed at all since her last visit, but Kakashi? He’d become a different person.

If she was being honest, she kind of liked it.
