Work Text:
I wonder if you even hear these, the voice rattles and Tommy lets the book in his hands hit the floor with a thud.
"I do," Tommy promises, "I do, I'm listening."
Your Priest doesn't think you can hear us. He said something…something about the walls? I don't remember.
They'd suspected as much, long before the Mystery God had started talking to him. There's no way they really think Tommy's getting these, with how they nervously bare their soul for him to hear.
He was nice to me today, they tell him, He gave me his bread when they forgot to feed me.
"That's Wilbur," Tommy laughs, "He's basically adopted you already, yeah?"
Techno watches Tommy from the armchair with bright eyes, piecing together the conversation as it runs.
He cried when I told him I was praying to you, the voice says and Tommy chokes, He laughed when I told him I called you the Midnight God and he thought it was funny when I yelled at him.
The Midnight God wasn't one of Tommy's titles, but he wouldn't tell the Mystery God as much even if he could.
It's a cool name! Even if it isn't his, he'll answer to anything once. Besides, no one else has to know.
Wilb--Your Priest, your Priest, they stress, Your Priest told me your name. I thought he was joking. The Priests would flay me alive if they heard me calling you something like that.
"Sounds like a bunch of pussies," Tommy says, leaning back on the couch, "Techno and I are gonna fuck 'em up when we find you."
Techno grumbles an affirmation and Tommy snickers, "He's worried about you. Both of you."
Techno's eyes narrow, but he doesn't deny it. Tommy and Wilbur have both apparently roped the Mystery God into their group and Techno is nothing if not susceptible to peer pressure.
He mentioned I might have forgotten to introduce myself, the voice says and Tommy stills. A name wouldn't mean much, from a normal follower. With another God, though, Kristen might be able to ask around and find where they were last. It might be a lead.
"Yeah," Tommy agrees, "Gotta start calling you something other than Mystery God, big man."
I'm a Priest, the voice confesses and Tommy blinks.
I'm a sinner, they carry on, but I used to be a Priest. I don't remember much. I've got some kind of--
The voice cuts off abruptly and Tommy tells Techno.
"What if something happened?" Tommy worries.
He doesn't have time to stress out too much, because the voice cuts back in, Amnesia. Wilbur says it's called amnesia. Ant-ero-grade amnesia, he said.
But, yeah, they say, I- Your Priest says he's friends with you. And, I know, obviously, either the Priests were lying about him being forsaken or he's lying about you to make me feel better, but I think you were probably friends.
"The biggest friend. He's a loser, but he's my brother," Tommy tells them. Technoblade chuffs.
He's got some kind of magic, the voice grumbles, Even some of the Priests like him now. I bet you were friends. He thinks you'll like me when you rescue us and I didn't tell him that you probably won't.
"I'm coming," he promises, "I am. We're gonna find you both and we'll save you. I swear."
He said--
The voice cuts off again and Tommy only worries half as much as last time.
Oh, the voice says, surprised, My name is RαɳႦσσ.
"Ranboo," Tommy tells Technoblade, scrambling off of the couch to find something to write with, "His name is Ranboo."
Techno's eyes widen.
I can't believe I forgot to tell you my name, Ranboo, his new brother, says.
Techno scrambles off of the couch and pulls a thick tome from one of the taller shelves. It's old and crusted with dust and he flips through the book with breakneck speed.
I forget a lot, Ranboo continues, But I haven't forgotten you, or your Priest.
"Course not," Tommy says, "I'm unforgettable."
Technoblade pulls away from the book and shouts for Phil. With wingbeats in the distance, Tommy looks at the page his brother's opened to.
RαɳႦσσ, it reads, God of the End.
This is big. Bigger than Tommy and maybe even bigger than Kristen.
The page reads of prophecy and tragedy and binding and disappearance. But there, at the bottom of the page, reads two haunting lines.
The Midnight God will rise again.
And, with him, the End will return.
