Work Text:
Albert could trick himself into thinking that he was still here, that there’s a moment of familiar laughter in the lab or he sees the same blonde hair in the crowd. Yet he knew, he knew it wasn’t true. He barely listened to Excella’s newest rants about whatever she was into at the time, maybe fashion. It seemed to be one of the only things the two can talk about without her trying to touch him so inappropriately. You never cared for fashion, did you? The old times where he watched the other go to the clearance and get his clothes, even with all the money he earned as a scientist of Umbrella.
Soon enough it was done, and Albert went to his own office to work. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to anymore but, he wouldn’t want him to stop on his goal.
“You know, Al,” Albert looked at the younger, “I don’t believe in a god.”
“Yet you wear a rosary.”
“It was a gift from my grandfather,” he explained, holding the cross, “but I don’t believe in God. It’s foolish to put your belief in something like that.” Albert always wondered how he would feel about how he refers to himself as a god. A nonbeliever in such actions or statements. Could he prove it to his dearest friend?
“Were we ever friends…” he asked out loud as he sat down in the desk chair. Perhaps by some standards, they were friends, they did share a kiss and…more intimate matters together. If Albert focused long enough he could trick himself into remembering those lips and how he tasted. His friend never forget, even after getting married he always went back to Albert for another kiss, another touch. Perhaps he felt that way for the older one but never said it. Albert wished he did, god, it would’ve made it better.
No… no it would’ve made it worse. Losing him knowing that he loved him would’ve hurt him more. God, he wished that he made it through Raccoon City. Yet…
“Would you follow me, like you always did?” After all, his friend was the entire reason he stayed alive for this long. The T-Virus he gave to him, was designed just for Albert before he went into that mansion with the STARS team. A gift of life, the perfect present. He was so thankful for it, everything the paranoid scientist did for him was a sacrifice in some way. Some fear the younger always had, a fear of losing the other, or never feeling like he did enough. Albert regretted never going back to him before it was too late before he got the message from Ada about his untimely demise.
“...I never got to say goodbye…” Albert looked out the window, taking off his sunglasses to stare into the dark night. I promised…I promised…
“I promised until the day I died I would never leave you.” He repeated out loud to himself, putting the sunglasses on and turning back around to his desk, taking the vial of G-Virus into his hand to observe. “I failed you, didn’t I? But now…your virus?” He brought the vial to his lip, smirking. “I won’t fail it…we’ll make something special…”
“Like the gods, we were destined to be, if only you could join me, William.”
