Chapter Text
She opened her eyes, slowly. Sucking a cold fresh air in through her nose, she now saw the white ceiling above her. That’s when she heard it, a shift beside her and cold hand touching her forearm.
“You’re here,” a gentle, raspy voice come from her side as she felt herself smiling and tears slowly pooling in her eyes but like always, she blink it away.
“What happened?” she asked, lifting her hand smoothly and cupped Lucas’s face who was now looking down at her, eyes mirrored one another, and the latter teared up.
“We got into an accident, remember,” replied Lucas, scooting closer to max just to gently caressing her soft cheeks. Of course, it was filled by wounds, but it did not stop him from enjoying her soft skin.
Though serious talk, her cheeks is smooth as if the wounds aren’t there at all.
“How- how long was I out?” she asked through a ragged breath. Frown was formed on her face when she notices how gorgeous Lucas look like as he slowly glowed in the dull room.
She squinted her eyes, noticing that her sight turning blurry.
Lucas looks fine and well; she must have been out for like a month but the words coming out from Lucas next tell her otherwise.
“Just two days…”
Two days
She looked around the room, how empty the room was and heard Lucas was chuckling again.
“It’s may a lot to take in…” Lucas suddenly says, leaning away from her when she turns to look at him.
“But they’re attending my funeral, Max,” he ended weakly. A small gasp escape from max.
“That’s not funny, Lucas.” her expression turn grim, trying to sit up but struggle when Lucas came closer and held her shoulder.
“Remember,” Lucas whispered, his voice turning small but still, it felt loud in her ears.
“I love you. Always.”
Max tries her best to lean away from his touch which she did. She was about to say something while looking at him in the eye, but Lucas was looking at something else instead. So, she followed his gaze which ended up he was looking at the monitor beside her.
A soft smile came to his lips, turning to max again and mumbled, “You have to rest…”
“Lucas- “
“This is just a dream. Don’t worry.” He couldn’t say more. Her monitor was frantically ringing in his ears, and he just wanted to tell her of how much he regrets it that both couldn’t be safe. Again.
“Lucas,” Max called again but Lucas shook his head.
“We were supposed to get married right now. The ceremony already started if we’re not here,” Lucas exclaimed.
That makes Max stopped from her rambling thoughts. She turned to the wall clock and saw the shortest needle pointing at 2.
“Let’s meet each other when we're given a proper chance in the next lifetime,” he added.
Max couldn’t say anything, her mind was racing with so many thoughts that she couldn’t even make out a word from her mouth.
“Are you going to leave me?” she settled for that.
Still smiling, Lucas ruffles Max’s hair. “I wish I’m not, but I had to.”
“I love you- “
“I love you too,” Max quickly said, afraid that one of them going to disappear from there and she hasn’t said the words yet.
“I love you so much,” she repeats.
Lucas lightly laughs, “I know. I’m going first. Goodbye.”
“Lucas, please don’t go anywhere.” Now she sounds so desperate, trying to get a hold of him but the man pulls away with teary eyes.
“I have to go, Max.” he whispered.
Max takes a breath with a sharp intake. Trying to blink away the tears because she couldn’t even look at him properly. “We couldn’t even buy your favorite piano that I promised you. That’s cruel when you’re leaving and I’m saving money for nothing,” she reasoned, trying to light up the mood when they both know what is going to happen and she couldn’t accept that.
Lucas laughs again at the attempt, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “You’re cute like always.”
Max trying to ignore the white smoke that starting to form on his legs, so she looks at his calm face. “Can I ask you for something- “
“Stop talking like you’re gonna die!” Max choked on her words.
Lucas’s face drops at that. Knowing the fiery on her face.
“You’re not gonna die. None of us will. Not now. This is just a dream.” She coaxed and Lucas swore, he was almost convinced by that. Oh, how good was Max Mayfield at gaslighting people.
But he chooses to ignore that because he was running out of time. “Let’s fall in love-”
“We are in love-”
“When we find each other again.”
Max was about to say that Lucas was ridiculous, but words vanished from her tongue when the white smoke was getting visible.
When he took a back step to the door, I could see his eyes, all shiny and shaky. His lips tremble as if he was cold, and I wanted to hug him so bad. I couldn’t look at him like that. I can’t. But I can't look away.
He breathed a last word before he vanished into the thin air in the dull white room. “Goodbye-”
The moment I saw him completely gone into nowhere, my chest tightens. I find it hard to breath. I don’t know why. Is it because he’s gone, or I am dying?
Or is it because some part of me died when he leaves me alone in this cruel world.
Is that supposed to be our last goodbye? I can’t even reply to it.
But I’m glad you had your goodbyes.
