“John, glad you could make it.”
Lord John Grey smiled as Jamie gave him a quick embrace, even after all these years it amazed him how far their bond had come.
It had seemed to grow stronger after John had gotten his fever and survived.
Would Jamie ever stop looking beautiful after any time being apart?
More than likely not.
Fraser's Ridge had had a successful harvest and the settlement was rapidly growing.
Jamie had invited John and Willy to come and visit.
William was asleep, having been completely drained by the travel.
John and Claire had spent the day visiting and Jamie had just arrived back home two hours before.
The night was filled with music and dancing and Jamie was doing something called a sword dance.
Two swords were laid on the ground in the shape of a cross, it was tradition the do the dance the night before a battle.
If the soldier bumped the sword it meant he would be killed.
It sometimes was done just for fun also.
Jamie looked so happy and carefree doing the dance to the cheering crowd.
And he was so graceful.
John felt his love and admiration filling him anew.
And in that moment he hated his king and England for their occupation of Scotland, for Culloden and for taking so much of the Scottish culture away.
John hated the part he had played in the battle.
It was an hour or so later and John had found a quiet place to sit.
Are ye all right?" Jamie came to sit next to him.
"I'm so sorry for what my country stole from yours”. John told him. “And I helped…”
“You were a soldier fighting for what ye believed was right so was I, I do not blame you, John Grey.”
“Thank you,” John replied, sincerely.
“Would ye like to do the dance?” Jamie asked.
“I don’t know how, I'd look like a fool anyways .”
“No one here except you and me.”
John decided to indulge him and Jamie put the swords on the ground and showed John the movements.
John tried, but he felt utterly ridiculous.
“Yer doing just fine.”
John couldn't help but laugh, “I'm definitely not a dancer.”
Jamie grinned, dimples and all, and John felt his heart flutter and then he nearly stumbled over the swords.
Jamie caught him and they stood so close to each other, the air seemed to feel charged as they looked into each other's eyes.
Their faces were so close together, all John had to do was lean in if he chose to….
Just then some laughter came and they quickly broke apart.
Two residents holding ale came into the clearing and Jamie and John greeted them.
"I should probably go find Bree and Roger, Claire was called away to deliver a baby.” Jamie said
“And I should see how William is doing.”
They were both masters at schooling their features and putting any awkwardness quickly aside.
Lord knew they had had plenty of practice.
