There were a grand total of 21 Alphas attending Hawkins High School in 1986.
And 4 Omegas.
Actually, 3 Omegas since Chantelle Harris got mated and pregnant last month and dropped out.
And all the Alphas and Omegas conformed to the roles expected of their designation.
For Chrissy Cunningham, this meant being the perfect, sweet Omega. She was petite, and with her mother’s assistance, remained as diminutive as possible. She was pleasant but quiet, warm but shy, and above all, obedient to what people wanted her to be.
She was on the cheer squad, she got good grades, she cleaned and sewed and would cook if her mother let her, and was going steady with the perfect, strong Alpha, Jason Carver.
Jason and the rest of the Alphas also fit their roles to a tee. They dominated the Hawkins sports scene, coasted through school on their physical prowess and picked the prettiest girls to go out with, especially Omegas and small Betas. They had a complicated web of power struggles and tenuous alliances, and didn’t hesitate to release their aggression in the form of physical violence. After all, Alphas will be Alphas.
In Hawkins, there was just one exception to the Alpha/Omega archetype.
Eddie Munson.
He was an Alpha that didn’t play sports, didn’t engage in any of the school power plays and didn’t chase aggressively after Omegas, whether they were single or not.
And it drove people crazy.
