Enid was overall having an ok time at prom.
The ballroom was crowded with students all dressed up in their best formal wear. The music and lights set up a fun casual party type of mood as the students went around and socialized with their peers.
Enid, as the social butterfly she was, was hopping from one friend group to another and talking to everyone in the room.
There was food and drinks at the side of the room where anyone could dig in at any time they liked. Several students were holding the ever so famous red solo cups while some were holding plastic plates off to the side to eat in peace without having the fear of bumping into someone and spilling all their food.
Enid had been offered several dances at this point, none of which she declined. She just wanted to have fun tonight, so she took every opportunity to do so.
It was fun, mind you, to dance around and socialize with her classmates, but for some reason, she had this weird inkling feeling that something was off. Or that something was missing, or someone…
In anycase, she decided to ignore that feeling and focused on what was really important tonight. Relax, have fun, maybe get some sweet gossip or two, forget the massive pile of homework she’ll have to do after this is all over and just enjoy the moment.
Shortly after circling the entire room at least thrice now, she opted to go to the snack bar to the side and just wait out a bit. She wasn't tired, per se, maybe a lil worn, but it’s only been a bit over an hour or two since the prom started and there was still a whole second half to it.
She heard the DJ announce that they were going to ease into some of the slow dances now and that they all should ready their dance partners in a bit. Enid didn’t particularly pay attention to this bit of information as she had always been just offered dances rather than her having to actively look for a partner.
She was pouring a drink for herself when she noticed everyone had suddenly gotten quiet. A few murmurs here and there but next to that, nothing. They were all staring at something behind her, and as she turned around, she finally saw the reason why the world seemed to stop moving.
Wednesday Addams had entered the building.
She stood there on top of the staircase, looking at everyone down below. She wasn't wearing the prom's color theme, opting for something dark as her usual attires.
She slowly made her descent down the staircase and the whole room seemed to hold their breath.
Hands touch, eyes meet
Sudden silence, sudden heat
Enid couldn't take her eyes off of her, it seemed like no one could. For someone who claims to absolutely despise being the center of attention, she sure did make it a habit to place herself in the spotlight.
The ravenette's eyes scanned the room. Everyone was staring at her, several were gaping. After a moment, her eyes locked with Enid. The blonde grinned.
Hearts leap in a giddy whirl
If Enid hadn't been more aware of herself, she probably would've dropped the cup she was holding ages ago.
Wednesday looked absolutely stunning. Gone were her signature double braids, in its place was some sort of updo that looked like a professional dressed it for her. Her dress was gorgeous. Frills along the neckline and shoulders, the dress had lace all the way down to the bottom just above her ankle, layered on top of each other making a poofy effect that gave her an interesting silhouette added by the small black belt that hugged her waist perfectly, tying it all together. It was not at all simple like what the rest of them were wearing. It was unique, it had character and it was as distinct as its wearer. It all just screamed Wednesday. And with it being the only one colored in black, it certainly made her stand out more in the crowd.
Enid didn’t notice that she’d been smiling the entire time. She didn’t realize that there had been something weighing her down until it was lifted off her shoulders. She felt light. She felt ecstatic.
She could be the one
Wednesday had torn her eyes away from her. Instead, she kept her gaze on the steps of the stairs as she made her descent to the room. She slowly and gracefully made her way down the stairs, and Enid couldn't help but admire the girl from afar.
That was until she noticed Wednesday's gaze drift off to the side, as if she was looking at someone.
She followed the girl's gaze until she saw it. She saw him .
And I want that girl
She hadn't noticed that she'd been smiling until it fell off of her face. She felt something within her drop into the pits of her stomach. A chill ran up her spine as she felt her whole body run cold.
Tyler was at the bottom of the steps looking up at Wednesday with his arm outstretched toward her. When Wednesday arrived at the bottom, she took his hand and linked it with hers.
And with that, the world seemed to resume. But for Enid, it felt like it was crumbling before her.
Don't dream too far
Don't lose sight of who you are
The couple – is that what they are? – moved and walked fluidly through the crowd. They kept their arms linked together as they went around the room. They were talking to each other, if you could call it that.
Tyler was talking and gesturing about as they walked while Wednesday only nodded and gave him short answers. If only Tyler understood that Wednesday didn't want to be spoken to right now-
Enid felt her claws crumple the cup she was holding. Ok, so maybe she'd been staring at them for too long and been following them from a distance this entire time. It wasn't stalking, she just wanted to make sure her roommate was safe from this whoever-he-thinks-he-is.
She just so happen to have just been looking at them the entire time and sort of kinda forgot about the whole party and maybe tried to decipher what they were talking about and have been hiding behind people when they seemed to look her way and-
Ok, so maybe she was stalking.
Don't remember that rush of joy
She just felt. Upset. Betrayed, even. She just can't wrap her head around the fact Wednesday was even here at the prom. Let alone bring this outsider to Nevermore.
She felt. Annoyed. And angry. Maybe hurt. The girl had been very vocal about her distaste in going to prom. She'd been disgusted by the idea of being surrounded by her peers. Enid knew this. It was in character for Wednesday to absolutely despise this type of setting. So she didn't even try.
She didn't even try.
To invite Wednesday to the prom. Because truly, why would she? She would've just been either dismissed or ignored or even berated for even implying to go, let alone together. She didn't have the energy for another fight. It would've been the only outcome anyway, right?
Right?
She could be the one
And I want that girl
Suddenly the music changed tempo and a slow dance started to form.
Several were turning to each other and going to the dance floor. The crowd divided into those who were to dance and to those who would stand by.
And in the distance she saw the two people she’d been trailing all night turning to each other. The boy held out his hand and bent over like a gentleman. Wednesday raised an eyebrow but let it happen. Enid felt her heart sink.
They moved fluidly towards the dancefloor while Enid was only left to stare, frozen in her place.
Every so often we long to steal
To the land of what-might-have-been
She should’ve invited Wednesday to the dance.
They could’ve gone together. Maybe even danced. They might’ve gotten closer. She could’ve helped Wednesday through all the social parts of the prom. They could’ve had a fun time. She would’ve dragged Wednesday around and danced with her. They could’ve gossiped or judged their classmates from afar. It would’ve been great.
Wednesday should’ve told her that she was going to the prom. Maybe then she would’ve gotten the courage to ask her. She would’ve even offered to not interact with each other the entire time and just be in the vicinity. She just wanted to be with Wednesday. If only she had known.
If only she had known.
But that doesn't soften the ache we feel
When reality sets back in
But she didn’t.
Wednesday didn’t tell her. She didn’t tell her that she’d be going despite her grievances. She didn’t tell her that she’d be going at all. She hated prom. She hated social settings. She didn’t want to be here.
But she is here. And she chose not to tell her.
Wednesday chose to go with Tyler. She didn't choose her.
And now there they were, dancing together. Hand in hand, to a slow dance.
Blithe smile, so pure
He who’s winsome, he wins her.
Enid held her breath as she watched them dance.
He held her waist and held her hand. He kept her close. Too close for comfort. He was still talking to her, still smiling. He was dorky, in a sense. He looked like a boy trapped in an older man’s body.
Charming. He was sort of charming. If being goofy, silly and lighthearted was appealing to you. He seemed like a lost puppy, looking at Wednesday with a twinkle in his eyes. He lights up with every sort of positive feedback thrown at him.
Enid wanted to vomit.
Dark hair braided into two
He twirled Wednesday in tempo with the music and then pulled her in.
Wednesday had an unreadable expression on her face, but still swayed along with his movements. They were in a hugging position now, closer than before.
They swayed until the music stopped, and when they did, they both took a step back.
That's the girl I chose.
Enid thought the nightmare was over.
It wasn't.
They stood there before each other, looking at each other's eyes. Wednesday's eyes flickered between his. She wore an incredulous look on her face as she did. Tyler only smiled.
And then, Wednesday motioned for him to get closer. And closer he did. He bent down until he was at eye level with Wednesday, and for a moment they were still.
Slowly, Wednesday leaned forward with hooded eyes.
Enid heard her breathe hitch.
And Heaven knows
Wednesday leaned and leaned, but then shifted her head to the left. She went further and then started speaking.
Enid saw her jaw moving as Tyler's eyebrows furrowed, his face falling into a serious expression. He nodded in intervals to what she was saying until she pushed back to stand up right once more.
They stood up straight, looking at each other with determined eyes. And with one final nod, they both turned to the exit, jogging on their way.
Enid stood there frozen, her mind buzzing with several thoughts all at once. But one thought stood out from the rest, in which all of her thoughts could all agree upon.
"I want that girl."
Enid murmured to herself with determination.
And the next thing she knew, she was heading towards the exit, following the two out of the prom.
