Work Header

a game of texting

Summary:

So without hesitation, or even reading the notification, he tapped on the notification, expecting a ‘hi’, a ‘hello’, or maybe even a ‘salutations’ which seemed more of her angle.

What is Enid’s number?

… what?

Before he could even comprehend the question, his phone buzzed again. And again.

Enid Sinclair. The werewolf. My roommate.

Best friend.

You do know who that is, right?

Notes:

I have many apologies but little regrets

This made me laugh, I hope it makes you too

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Xavier didn’t think it would be too much to ask for a text.

Sure, Wednesday didn’t seem like the type of person to use a phone. But a phone was a great gift! She had a taste for music, and so he had downloaded a few of his favorite music, alongside some classical cello pieces in the music section. And he had also gotten one of those prepaid sim cards, one of the cheaper ones since he didn’t think Wednesday would write much, and he was certain that she was savvy enough to find another if it ran out.

Yes, so he really, really thought it would be minimal effort on her part to message him. It was more of hope rather than expectation, to be honest. Maybe if she thought of him in the middle of the break, she would text?

Just a letter, a ‘hi’, an emoji, anything. He’d be content with that.

What he didn’t expect was for his phone to buzz barely thirty minutes after she had just left.

It was just a notification, but the fact she had messaged him so quickly after leaving - did she miss him already? He knew that she was really a softie, only keeping that cold exterior up to look hardened in Nevermore.

Clearly, Wednesday was much more different when texting, even explicitly calling Enid her best friend! If only she would tell him what they were too. Well, at least she was being straightforward in her request instead of sneaking around for more information, so he merely shrugged off the strange texting language as he typed.

not even a hi :(

haha jkjk uh gimme a minute im not exactly close friends with her

but maybe we could be? 😉

The ticks turned blue, indicating that Wednesday had read them, but instead he received cold silence. Right, right she wasn’t the type of gal to beat around the bush, always business-like as she went about her day. He always liked women who could boss him around, though he would neither admit that to Bianca nor Wednesday.

After two minutes of no response, he sighed, before messaging Ajax and then forwarding the contact to Wednesday.

Right, so here’s enid’s number

i had no idea you were so close to her

always knew you were soft inside

Thanks

for the number

Nah, I thought you were going to ghost me tbh

I really appreciate that you texted me

ttyl?

The ticks turned blue, but no response came. Figuring he shouldn’t push his luck, Xavier closed the app, a small smile on his face as he felt a little hope.

At least she texted first.
