They had been at this for hours, and yet barely any progress had been made since when they started. Sonic's plan to defeat a dragon, that had been terrorizing Avalon, was turning out to be a fluke. This was do to him foolishly bringing only one of his trusty knights, Lancelot.
They took turns attacking the beast, but even then, it was getting tiring. Even Caliburn had ceased his comments. Sonic glanced at Lancelot.
He was tired, more so than him. He had multiple gashes littered over his body and his breathing was ragged. At this rate, he wouldn't last much longer.
"Lance! Get back to Camelot and get some help!" He shouted wearily, this was feeling all too familiar.

"Shadow your super form wont last! Get back to the Colony!"
Even after he had yelled at him multiple times, he kept on fighting. He always admired that about him, even in the short time he knew him, but right now it was horrifying to watch.
Shadow let out a tired, angry yell and charged forward into the biolizard, delivering the final blow and killing it.
"Whoohoo! That was sweet, Shadow!" Sonic celebrated, only to realize his companion was no longer in front of him.
He was falling straight to earth.
He sped after him with all of his energy.
He wasn't going to make it in time.
Tears wet his cheeks only for a second at they were quickly brushed away by the speed he was going at.
He reached out and grabbed Shadows inhibitor. He was met with the most pained and sorrowful face he'd every seen. It was heartbreaking, but at the same time, it was a peculiar expression, he almost seemed, content?
"Shadow! I've got you buddy, we're going home!" He celebrated. Shadow gave a weak smile before unclipping his inhibitor and and continuing his fall down to Earth.
"Maria, this is what you wanted right? This is my promise to you."
Sonic froze, there was no way to save him now, he already felt the Earth's gravitational pull dragging him towards it and his super form wouldn't last much longer.
He watched in horror as his rival, the world's enemy, and now the world's hero, sacrificed himself. He turned around and sped back to the Ark.

Sonic couldn't let that happen. Not again. Lancelot continued his onslaught.
Both of them are stubborn. He thought fondly.
He dashed around the beast looking for a weak spot, anything.
Sonic looked under its neck, a single spot was undisturbed by its scales, bingo.
He swiftly approached Lancelot and swooped him off his feet.
"Sir Sonic, what are you doing!" He thrashed, but it was no use as he was more worn down than Sonic initialy thought.
He had to end this, now.
He set Lancelot against a tree, urging him to stay put, in turn, he weakly protested, before hanging his head in defeat.
"Hey, look at me" he gently grabbed his Knight's scratched face. "I'll finish this, you've done enough already." He smiled fondly at his knight's stormy face and brushed his lips gently against his cheek. Sonic abruptly pulled out of the embrace and darted back to the dragon.
"Let's finish this!"
He began to sprint around the dragon in circles before willing his legs to speed up and break the sound barrier, leaving the dragon confused and glancing around in every direction to see where its opponent had gone.
Sonic took his chance and heel stopped right under the dragon's throat and used his last bit of energy to stab deep into the exposed flesh.
The dragon let out a loud pained roar before slumping to the ground. He kept his sword in the beast until he was sure it was dead.
He pulled his sword out and swiftly pushed his burning legs back to his knight who was staring at him with admiration.
Sonic dropped Caliburn on the ground and dove into Lancelot's arms.
"Hey! Is this anyway to treat your sword that just helped save all of us?!" Claliburn yelled, although it was muffled by the ground.
"Heh, sorry, Caliburn." Sonic chuckled, dragging Lancelot up and putting his arm around his shoulder. He picked up Caliburn and started their journey back to Camelot.
