It was a long trip.
*Rumble* *Rumble* *Rumble*
The life Sunny Suzuki once had is now gone, nothing but a distant memory.
*Rumble* *Rumble* *Rumble*
Though if he was being honest, he wouldn’t say he would miss it. Moving from California to a small town called Faraway in some small part of the state of Washington… In all honesty he’d much prefer a calm quiet town over the bustling streets of San Diego.
And he definitely will not miss the raging streets of angry Chargers fans after their team inevitably fails.
*Rumble* *Rumble* *Rumble*
But there was one thing he had to ask, ‘Why did Dad have to choose the bumpiest road ever…’
“Oi.”
“... Did I say that?”
“Yeah, you did.” Yamaha Suzuki commented.
“He has a point.” And in comes Halley Suzuki, holding the map in her lap, “We woulda been fine taking the Freeway, but noooo. The scenic route is faster and looks nicer, he said.”
“It was a good idea at the time.”
“Clearly not considering I was against it from the beginning. You think I don’t know my own home state?”
‘ There they go again… ’ Realizing another round of bickering is spawning, Sunny weighed his options.
…
…
‘Why not? Time to read more of that manga Nana sent me from Japan.’ When Sunny was forc– tasked to learn Japanese by his Grandmother, his Grand Aunt or Nana decided that an easier way for him to learn was by reading manga. That was totally her plan and absolutely did not just want Sunny to be introduced to Manga.
‘ Where is it… aha! ’ So, she started sending him volumes of her current favorite manga every few months, and right before the move she sent Volume 5, and right as he opened the book.
“Mmph…” His slumbering sister, Mari Suzuki roused from her sleep. “MmmMMPH!”
*Pop-op* *Pop*
“Man we’ve been in here a while…” Mari muttered, stretching her back to elicit light pops. “Oh, another volume?”
Sunny nodded, “Read with me?”
“Hmm…” She placed a finger on her chin, “Too lazy, how about you read it to me.”
Sunny figured that she really wants to see how far he’s getting into his Japanese, but he loved reading to Mari, so he indulged.
“Here’s Chapter 25.”
…
“Kids, we’re at a gas station, want any–”
“‘It’s easy to catch a cold if he stays like that’. Tohru, ever the caring soul, brought a large wool blanket for the slumbering Hatori.”
‘ Nevermind, I know what they like. ’ Leaving the two siblings to their impromptu book club, Halley exited the car undetected and entered the gas station. ‘ Now where is it… aha! ’
Reaching into the freezer units, she grabbed a Tasty Soda™ for Sunny… and now the water section.
…
…
‘ Dah we can splurge a little! ’ She then grabbed a Fuji Water™ ignoring the four dollar price tag as she headed towards the snack aisle. ‘ We still have an hour or two before we make it to Faraway. We’re planning on getting take out once we get there so something light. ’
She (eventually) settled on a double pack of little bread muffins, paid for the items, and returned to the car while Yamaha was filling it with gas.
“‘... The golden vacation time is over so quickly.’ Yuki commented, ‘I know…’ Tohru agreed, before a bright cheery smile graced her features, ‘Those days spent at the Vacation House were so much fun!’ She remembered fondly, ‘I only felt it was noisy…’ Yuki however, had differing opinions–”
“You gonna wait for my arm to break off?”
“Huh?” Snapped out of his story time stupor, Sunny noticed his mother holding a black paper bag. “Sorry Mom.”
“I was enjoying listening to him read, Mom.”
“Well I don’t want Arthritis before my 30’s.”
“You don’t get Arthri–”
“Alright, car’s all filled.”
“And with that, time to get back to the road.” Halley said, subtly forcing everyone to move past from this conversation.
“... Well Sunny let’s conti–”
*Tss* *CRACK*
“... Really?”
“What?” Sunny asked, cracking open his can of soda, “I’m thirsty.” Mari rolled her eyes and opened the bag.
…
…
“Hey, how come I got water?!”
…
After a mediocre take-out dinner and a night of sleeping on a futon that was ‘Comfortable if a little small’. The next day is here! A day full of exploring Sunny’s new town!
*Thud*
At least it would be if his Dad and Mari didn’t go into town to enroll Mari for the next school year and to get more supplies, leaving Sunny and his Mom with the chores.
Sometimes life is a cruel–
*Thud*
“I know that look, you don’t wanna do your chores do you?” His Mom knew him all too well, “Weeeeell I dunno, there’s a ton of stuff to do… hmm…” Sunny was holding his four year old breath, waiting for his mother’s decision, “Hmm… okay!”
Sunny did a little fist pump, “But!” Before realizing that there’s always a catch, “If you’re gonna go out and goof off, you might as well do something productive. Go out there and meet our neighbors. Make new friends.”
Before Sunny could voice his concerns…
*Fwap*
Halley put… holy cow.
“20, 40, 60, 80, 100. 100 Smackeroos right there.” 100 Dollars. One. Hundred. Dollars. That’s like… that’s like 20 million dollars right there!
Many ideas played through Sunny’s head on how he could blow all of this money. He can fill his room with candy! He can get Mari an issue of that new Captain Spaceboy Series he heard about! He can just throw it on the ground and roll around in it like that one cartoon!
“But!” Again with the buts, “I’m expecting change, so unless there’s a very good reason you better not spend all of that money.” Shoot, this is a lesson in financing. But at least Operation: Scrooge is still possible.
Before Sunny could think more on the fundamentals of a money bath, Halley gently grasped Sunny’s shoulders and began shoving him towards the door, “And remember. Look both ways before crossing the street, if you see something you like and no one is around you can take it, and don’t get into any sort of white van.”
*Creak* *Fwump*
“Have fun son!”
*SLAM*
…
…
So anyway back to the money bath–
*Click* *Creak*
“Another thing, boundaries. Don’t go past the Park or the Shopping Plaza, and don’t go beyond 4 houses on this row. Oh and home by 5:00!”
*SLAM*
‘ She’s going to break the door… ’ Sunny thought, before facing forward, ‘ Well, time to start walking. ’ And just like that, Sunny took his first step.

“I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.”
“You took one step outside and you’re already hurt.” With the boo-boo on his forehead patched up and healed with his mother's trademark 'Healing Kiss', Halley closed the First Aid kit and walked back into the house. “Now I expect you two to be more careful, ya here?”
“Crystal ma’am!” The tan boy said, as Sunny sulked bitterly on the step. “And I’m so so so sorry!” He considered accepting the apolog– “Anyway! We’re your new neighbors! I’m Kelsey!” Nevermind guess Kelsey accepted the apology for him.
“I’m Sunny.”
“Nice to meet you Sunny!” He greeted with a smile, one of his front teeth noticeably missing, “My brother wanted to see that girl that just left, but now he’s stuck working on Summer Homework like a lame-o.”
“Sis won’t be back until 5:00.” And Sunny either missed the implication or didn’t care.
“Welp, guess Henry’s gotta try tomorrow.” Kelsey said, before forcibly pulling Sunny to his feet, “Anyway Dad wanted me to get some food for Henry while hedoes some dinner stuff, wanna come with me?”
“Okay.”
“Woo! Let’s go!” Kelsey dragged Sunny along at a speed he was barely able to keep up with.
“...” And it was then that Sunny realized that today was gonna be a long day…
…
*DING LING*
“Aye yo! One Hero Sandwich please!” Kelsey yelled, barging into the modest Pizza Joint dubbed simply as ‘Gino’s Pizza’.
“Ghh!” And the worker running the register showed visible signs of frustration, “Ordering a sandwich at a pizza place…”
“Hey, it's on the menu for a reason.”
“Yeah the first owner put it in there for his wife–”
“So make us a sandwich for their love!”
The cashier was tempted to use the ‘right to refuse’ excuse, but he can’t exactly do that over a sandwich. “You know what? Fine. One Hero Sandwich, coming up in 15.”
“Aye eye!” Kel exclaimed, and with time to kill, Sunny decided to explore the pizzaria.
He took note of all the little knick-knacks that decorated the walls, the jukebox that Sunny noted was missing 13 CD’s, but the one thing that truly caught his attention was the arcade machine. Galomega™. One look at the High Score list, and Sunny found a perfect means to kill 15 minutes.
“Hey Galomega!” Kel exclaimed, “I play this all the time when Mom would send me over to get some lunch… I… wasn’t very good at it.”
Sunny dug past the five 20’s in his pocket to pull out a single quarter. One shot, one opportunity.
“You’re gonna give it a try?”
Sunny only nodded, wanting to fulfill his destiny, Sunny dragged a chair towards the arcade machine to give him the optimal height to play. And with the quarter in hand.
*Clink* *Clang*
The iconic theme started to play, and the game was on.

Background noise? Faded. Smell of baking pizzas? Dulled.

Buttons are mashed at an extreme rate.
Sunny has entered… the fabled Gamer State™. All that mattered to him was the screen, his twin ships, the alien war crafts that were flying towards him, and his points that were scrolling higher and higher. 10,000 points turned to 20, then 40, then 80, 100,000 points and still counting.
He was expertly weaving around the enemy shots and destroying them with pinpoint accuracy. He lost a life early on because he was careless, he wouldn’t make a mistake like that again.
Growing ever closer to the High Score of 198,150, as everyone was watching Sunny from a distance. Kelsey withheld the urge to cheer so as to not distract him, the Manager was shocked that a young kid was playing so well, and a guy with glasses looked on with a small smile.
170,000 points before he lost another one of his lives, and his twin ships. Now he only has 2 left, and this far into the game Sunny weighed whether it was worth it to try and get it again. After mulling it over…
*Woawoawoawoa* *Bu-dudududuuu*
FIGHTER CAPTURED
He took that risk, fully knowing that if he messed it up, then this run is all over.
175,000 points. Only 25,000 more and he can claim the top of the leaderboards and add that to his expansive list of achievements!
…
…
Okay he doesn’t have many achievements, granted he’s only four but– Stay focused! He can’t afford any–
*BOOM*
Mistakes… in an accidental misfire Sunny shot the captured ship, he was on his last life…
*Boom Boom*
And managed to clear the last few ships. Sitting at 177,580 points the words CHALLENGING STAGE appeared on screen.
‘ I think I can get the High Score right here if I hit all of them and get the bonus points.’
And his judgment would be correct. If Sunny can hit all 40 ships in this bonus stage he would get around 17,000 points. Adding the 10,000 he gets for clearing it perfectly Sunny would break the record with around 4,000 points extra. However, those 10,000 points are crucial. If he doesn’t do it perfectly then he’ll have to run the risk of going to the next stage to scrounge up the remaining points he needs.
With only a split second to compose himself… the stage starts.
Enemy fighters immediately descended down from the top of the screen before hooking left, Sunny moved to intercept, clearing that line without any trouble and raising his score past the 180,000 range.
Not giving him a chance to breathe more ships came from the bottom left hand corner. Naturally he was caught off guard but due to their figure 8 flight pattern he managed to destroy that whole line before they could fly away.
The next wave came in from the bottom right this time, but in a stroke of pure luck they flew in the same figure 8 pattern as the last one so destroying this line was simple.
3 for 3, the next wave descended from the top screen this time. Hooking left, same flight pattern as the very first one. With Sunny destroying this one he needs to destroy this last line to be at the top of the leaderboards.
The fifth and final line descended from the top and this time hooked right. With Sunny on the left he had to chase the alien fighters, but he missed two of them as they rapidly converged to the center of the screen. His breath hitched, but after regaining his composure.
*Pew Boom* *Pew Boom*
Destroyed the last two ships and perfected the Challenging Stage. A celebratory tune played as Sunny was awarded the 10,000 points for getting a perfect. And with that… 204,940 is the new high score.
*Bwawawawang*
And with an awarded extra life if Sunny wanted to keep playing he could easily rack up a ton of points! But now that he’s gotten the high score he was half paying attention to what he was doing. But that didn’t stop him from adding another 15,750 points to his score. Leaving him with a grand total of 220,690 points.
And with that, there it is… his score at the top of the Leaderboards, and a decent lead over 2nd place as well. With the 3 letters to make whatever he wanted. His first true step into the gaming world, his chance to make his presence known… granted it’s in his small town in an even smaller pizzeria, but semantics! This was his chance to make his mark on the world. And it all starts…
S U N
With those three letters.

“YOU DID IT SU–”
*DING*
The sound of a bell and a man yelling knocked Sunny out of his daze, ‘ What was I… oh right the sandwich.’ With his side quest of being the best Galomega Player in the World (his town) coming to a close, Sunny got off the chair, slid it back into place with his chair brethren, and walked back to his new friends.
“ORDER UP! One Hero Sandwich and two pieces of cheese pizza!”
…
…
“Umm… we didn’t order two slice–”
“Oh it was courtesy of one of our regulars for that kid.” The manager said, pointing to Sunny, “You didn’t notice because you were watching him play, but he said he was impressed that you beat his High Score and bought you lunch as a reward.”
Well you’d never hear Sunny reject free food… especially two slices of cheesy, bready, high in cholesteroly goodness. So he walked over to claim his prize.
Sunny has earned two Slices of Pizza!
- Saucy, cheesy, and just the right amount of crunch, this lunch time classic can’t be beat! (Just watch your cholesterol)
As he was making his way towards the door Sunny noticed a distinct lack of friend walking behind him. “Kel, are you not coming?”
…
…
“Kel?” Kelsey meanwhile was confused by the sudden name change.
“Calling you Kelsey feels weird. So you’re Kel now.” The way Sunny declared it showed the boy that there is next to no room to argue…
“I like it!” Not that Kel was going to argue since he loved his new nickname, so with bagged sandwich in hand, Kel once again began dragging Sunny along.
“Come on Sunny, if I don’t get home soon Mom’s gonna kill me!”
He’s an energetic one, but Sunny liked him all the same.
…
With new friends, new achievements… and delicious lunch in his belly, Sunny was prepared to continue his exploration of his new town.
Though in retrospect he probably shouldn’t have let Kel drag him back to his house because now he’s walking back to the Plaza. Bu-but it’s all about the adventure! Who knows what kind of new events he could–
“I said I was sorry!”
“‘Sorry’ doesn’t bring my colored pencils back!”
Conflict was brewing as Sunny made it to the Park. As two girls, one with short light brown hair the other with rather messy black hair were sitting on opposite sides of the picnic table. Both appear to be rather upset.
‘Girls are fighting… Mom said something about this.’
‘Remember Sunny, if two girls are fighting it’s best to leave them alone.’
‘No that’s not right, Mom doesn’t run from anything.’
‘Remember Sunny, if two girls are fighting then you must help them…’
‘Yeah that’s what Mom said. She said to help them, but how do I do that?’
‘Remember Sunny, if two girls are fighting then you must help them… By listening to their problems and showering them with complements and gifts! Girls love a gentleman who will be there for them and cater to their every need! Do it Sunny! GET ME GRANDCHILDREN!!’
‘I don’t know what she meant with the other stuff… but to help them I give them gifts and listen to them? Sounds pretty easy.’ With the extraneous (and loud) information in his head, Sunny had one goal. To give gifts and listen.
Side Quest: True Gentleman

But the question remains ‘What do I get them? Hmm… that black haired girl said something about colored pencils… So maybe I'll get her some of those? Yeah… yeah that makes sense.’
With the first girl’s gift set, Sunny had to wracked his brain to figure out the second girl’s gift. Running out of options, Sunny decided to pull a page out of those Sherlock Holmes books Mari reads for him when his father leaves for a business trip… and observe.
‘Hmm… her clothing at first glance doesn’t offer any info. Cerulean button up cardigan, white shirt underneath with two pink stripes across the chest, a pale blue skirt, all tied together with open toed Mary Jane flats… oh? Her socks are decorated with a dolphin pattern. Love of the ocean perhaps?’
…
…
‘Yes, further proof lies in that hair pin she has. A starfish, it appears. And although partially covered, on her wrist is a small watch with a shark decal on it. Sunny Holmes you cracked the case, our resident blonde haired girl… has an affinity for the ocean!!’
With his battle plan finalized, Sunny turned heel and sprinted towards the Shopping Plaza.
…
…
“Did you see how much he stared at us?” The girl with light brown hair commented.
“Yeah… I wonder what he’s doing?”
…
Hobbeez. A small novelty shop/memorabilia center/comic book store/pawn… it’s a lot of things. But the common denominator is that it’s the best place to get… well whatever you need.
Need a guitar? A few are hanging on the walls.
Books? All filed in alphabetical order right next to the figurines and the posters.
Comics? Neatly shelved in front of the store.
But what Sunny is interested in are the plushies and art supplies. All of which are conveniently located at the front of the store–
“B-But Brandi!” Following the noise, Sunny sees a pair of girls. The short haired girl looked around Sunny’s age and was pointing at the shelf of books… specifically pointing at the Manga section.
“Sorry Bebe, we’re only here to buy a gift for Auntie’s birthday, and we gotta be quick about it.” Muttered the older red haired girl, who Sunny assumed was the girl– Bebe’s older sister. “We’ll buy it tomorrow.”
“But Volume 4 of Vegetable Vessel just came out! I have to read it.” Sunny’s ears perked up at the name.
‘Vegetable Vessel? Another reader?’ And in that moment… Sunny knew what he had to do.

While the pair were distracted, Sunny… with the stealth and grace of a ninja…
*THUD* *FWAP*
Crashed into the shelf and pulled a few copies of Vegetable Vessel onto the ground, “Oh I’m so sorry!” And with an, ahem, Oscar worthy… performance started to pick up the mess he made.
“Weirdo…” But his convoluted plan worked… somehow. Ensuring the Older Sister wouldn’t look in his direction, he swiped the newest volume of Vegetable Vessel, and sneakily blitzed to the counter.
“Hello!” And the friendly shopkeeper was there to greet him, Sunny looked at his name tag, ‘Pedro’. “Can’t say I’ve seen your face around. New in town?” Sunny nodded, “Well what can I get ya?”
First and foremost, Sunny placed the volume on the counter. “Aah, I assume this is a gift for the little lady?” Pedro whispered, as Sunny nodded his head. Understanding the plan, the nice shopkeeper scanned the book. “There, it’s in the system. Sneak it into her bag.”
Easier said than done, but since Bebe is currently sulking behind her big sister Brandi slipping it into her bag shouldn’t be too bad. ‘ You’re a ninja Sunny… believe it! ’
“Hmm… I don’t know, Keychains seem like too small a gift. What do you think, Bebe?”
“I don– huh?” Bebe turned back to see Sunny, volume halfway into her bag as he looked like a deer in headlights.
“Bebe–”
“Y-Yeah they’re too small. How about uhh…” Bebe was looking all over the store, “How about a guitar! Yeah yeah she was talking about getting a hobby?”
With a few extra seconds bought, Sunny pushed the book into her bag and went back to the counter. The young girl seemed relieved while the older sister seemed skeptical.
“Those look a little pricey…” Brandi muttered… before throwing her hands into the air, “But what the heck. It’s not my money.”
“Haah…” Bebe let out a sigh of relief, and as her sister was looking at the guitar that hung from the wall she made her way towards Sunny. “Thanks, sorry for all the trouble…”
“Don’t be.” Sunny whispered back, “By the way, Tohru is my favorite character.”
Bebe’s eyes were akin to saucers, but before she could respond her sister sighed, “Nope, don’t think a guitar is– Bebe what are you doing in line?”
Excitement replaced with fear as Bebe felt beads of nervous sweat roll down her forehead, “Uuuuhh… I thought the guitar was a good enough gift I was standing in line?”
…
…
“Well sadly it’s out of our budget, maybe a good book is the answer after all. Come on, help me look.”
“Coming!” Bebe yelled before looking back at Sunny, “She’s my favorite too.”
Well Sunny now has a new best friend. “Good on ya kid, she seems really happy.”
… Yeah, yeah she does, and Sunny felt… proud of that.
Surprise Quest: Fellow Wee– Fan

“Now…” The shopkeep said, “What was it you really came in here for?”
…
“Colored Pencils? Aah an artist huh? Well let’s see here… a-ha! Here you are.” He set down two different boxes of colored pencils. “We got a pack of 24 or a pack of 100 colors.” Sunny contemplated his options… before shrugging and tapping the box of 100 pencils. “Excellent choice.” He set the pencils aside, “Anything else?”
“Plushies.”
“Hmm…” Pedro pondered for a moment, “Need anything specific?”
“Umm… ocean?”
That one descriptor was all he needed as he walked through the door behind him, “I got a shark and a dolphin! Which one do you want?”
“Dolphin!” Sunny had to dig deep for that yell, forgetting the fact that Bebe and her sister were still in the store.
“... Maybe a plushy is the better option?” But luckily Brandi didn’t seem to mind too much this time.
“Gotcha!” The humble shopkeep came back out with a small dolphin plush and set it next to the pencils. “Will that be all?”
“Ye–” But then he paused, ‘ Should I get myself something? ’
…
…
Sunny decided to throw all caution into the wind and splurge on himself, “Do you have anything fun?”
“Hmm… I got just the thing.” Pedro disappeared back into the backroom, before bringing out a box of six little devices. “These are new toys that came out recently, they’re called ‘Pet Rocks’. These six doohickies each have a unique monster in them. You can battle other people with them, and you can train each one by walking. A fun way to get exercise.”
Well call Sunny intrigued, “How much for all of them?”
Pleased with making a sale, he ran the three items, including the volume of Vegetable Vessel, through the register. “80 bucks.”
Nodding Sunny dug his hand into his pocket, “Buuuut you’ve just qualified for the Moved into Faraway Discount. 50% off.” That 80 dollar price tag just dropped to 40, but Sunny stared at the man with a weird look, “What? It’s totally legit, now that’ll be 40 bucks.”
Sunny was skeptical… but still handed Pedro two 20’s, and after a few clicks and dings, the receipt was printed.
Sunny has Purchased…
- Dolphin Plushie
- An adorable plush whose porpoise was to be hugged.
- Colored Pencils
- So many colors… so many possibilities.
- Pet Rocks x6
- Mini creatures hide in these little devices… Can you catch them all?
“Thank you, have a nice day! Oh and welcome to town!” He accepted the items that were put in a little plastic baggy and began making his way out of the store. (But not before sneakily waving bye to Bebe)
‘ Do I open the Pet Rocks now?’
…
…
‘ Gifts first. ’
…
“Did you see how two bits of his hair was sticking out?
“Yeah I wonder how– Oh he’s back.”
Sunny ran back to the park bench and pulled out the two gifts. “Here. Gifts. Now stop fighting.”
…
…
“Huh?”
Sunny mentally stalled, ‘M-Mom didn’t say anything about this!!’ The gifts didn’t work and he didn’t have a backup plan! Code Red! CODE RED!! “Uhh… Uh-uhh…” Shoot now he’s short circuiting! This is a Code Red Delta, I repeat! This is a Code Red Delt–
“Oh look at this Dolphin!” The light brown haired girl snatched it out of Sunny’s hands and hugged it, “It’s so soft!”
“And colored pencils! 100 of them?! I didn’t know they sold a pack with this many!” And the black haired girl followed suit taking the colored pencils, thinking about the endless possibilities.
Sunny was… robbed of his presents?
“Uhh wai–”
“You got these for us?!”
“... Y-Yeah?”
Guess that confirms that. Sunny has Gifted the Dolphin Plushie and Colored Pencils.
“Seriously?! Why?” The brown haired girl asked.
“Well Mom said that I had to help girls who were fighting by giving them gifts and listening to their problems.” Oh right, step two. “So what were you two fighting about?”
…
…
“What were we fighting about?” The black haired one asked.
“... I don’t remember.” As the brown haired girl was equally clueless, before looking at Sunny. “Guess I was too busy wondering what you were up to.”
“Me?”
“Yeah I was wondering why you were just… standing there staring at us.”
“... Oh I was just trying to figure out what to get you as a gift. I saw the dolphins on your socks, the starfish on your hair clip, and the shark watch and went to buy things.”
“... Oh. Well I love it! Thank you!” With that mystery solved she went back to hugging her Dolphin, “Wait… I don’t know your name.”
“It’s Sunny, I moved in with my family yesterday.”
“Sunny. Sunny Sunny Sunny… I like it!” The girl said with a beaming smile, “I’m Cristal, but you can call me Cris, and that’s Mincy. Since you’re super nice we’re friends now.” Cris said, before looking at Mincy, “If that’s okay with you– Mincy are you even paying attention?!”
“Huh?” Mincy looked up from her lined paper notebook, “Oh yeah friends. I agree.”
Cris sighed, “At least she was listening… I think?” She then turned back to Sunny with a smile, “Anyway I’m gonna stay here with Mincy for a bit. See you tomorrow, new friend!”
And with that Cris sat next to a drawing Mincy, leaving Sunny to ponder what just happened. ‘ I didn’t listen to their problems… but they’re happier now. So… I did it? ’
…
…
Ehh, why not I’ll count it. Ahem…
Side Quest: True Gentleman
COMPLETE!!
…
With two missions completed, making three new friends, and getting some new toys for himself, Sunny was on a roll and it’s barely one in the afternoon!
However, Sunny was quick to realize that he’s running out of new places to check out and explore. All he had left was the small (and in a state of disrepair) tool shop called ‘Fix-It™’ or a pretty sizable grocery store by the name of ‘Othermart™’.
‘Hmm… eenie meenie minie… grocery store.’ With his next destination decided, Sunny stepped up to the doors.
*Fwoop* *Ding Dong*
And let the sliding doors slowly open, a small smile worming onto his face ‘ Hehe, they opened by themselves. ’ As amusing as it was, Sunny pushed through the urge to keep letting the door open and close repeatedly and went inside. A wave of cool air hit his face as he entered the sterile grocery store. Loud generic pop music filled the atmosphere as Sunny looked at all the shelves and aisles.
Various fruits and vegetables lined the Produce Stall, as refrigerators are stocked full of various beverages. Behind them are rows upon rows of various foods. From sliced bread, chips, cookies, cake mix… they really put a lot of sweet stuff in the front huh?
A-Anyway there’s a ton of stuff here, and that’s not even acknowledging the other stalls in the far back. A meat deli, a seafood stall, and a bakery. Not to mention a Pharmacy and a Candy Shop flanking the sides.
But if Sunny was to be honest… he was kinda overwhelmed. There’s so many things to look at and explore, where does he start–
“Pardon me.” Guess he can start with the person behind him.
“Hmm?” Sunny turned around to see a tanned girl about a foot taller than him, had a brown dress and a white dress shirt… and had the same shoes Cris had. ‘ Must have been a sale. ’
“I couldn’t help but notice you have some Pet Rocks.”
…
…
How did she know that? Is she a psychic?!
The girl let out a giggle, “Don’t be alarmed, I just saw the box from your bag.”
Confused, Sunny looked at his bag… and sure enough the box was pressing against his bag and the words ‘Pet Rocks’ were clear as day on the plastic. “Oh.” Was all he could say in response, “... So you’re not psychic?”
“Oh I am.”
She said it in a monotonous tone, it must be true!! “Woah… so cool…” But wait, if she’s psychic then how can he possibly win?!
“I’m joking.”
…
…
Sunny couldn’t believe he got duped like this.
The girl let out another giggle, “So, does that serious face mean you’ll accept my challenge?”
Of course he accepts! He’s been tricked for pete’s sake! He has his honor to maintain here! Buuuut there’s just one problem. “I haven’t opened these yet.”
“Oh.” The girl pondered for a moment, “Well not to worry, I know how to activate them, give them here.” Before Sunny could even respond or agree, the girl took his bag.
Sunny was robbed of his Pet Rocks.
The girl then sat down on the recently cleaned floor of Othermart, as she fiddled with Sunny’s Pet Rocks. “Okay, when I flip this switch it will activate and give you your Pet Rock. Ready?” Sunny nodded as he sat down beside her, waiting in bated breath.
“Alright, now which one to start with… hmm… all of them.”
“Wait wha–” Before Sunny could respond, the girl flipped all 6 of the switches one after another. The Pet Rocks were letting out a little jingle that got kinda distorted from being a few seconds out of sync… but eventually eggs appeared on each of the devices, and the first one to open is…
*Crack Cra-CRACK* *Badadaaa-Da-dadadadaaaa*
Congratulations! Your Egg hatched into a Jash!
… To say it was disappointing would be the understatement of the century. It’s a rectangular blob with two short legs and a crooked mouth.
*Fwoop* *Fwoong*

- While it may look small and unappealing, this little guy has big dreams of being the strongest Pet Rock ever! He’s going to keep fighting until everyone remembers his name!
“Ooh Jash, a good starter Pet Rock all around.”
Before Sunny could respond to the girl.
*Crack Cra-CRACK*
The next one opened.
Congratulations! Your Egg hatched into a Bulb-ulb!
A slightly more interesting design, it’s an unbloomed flower with a lightbulb sticking out of the bulb.
*Fwoop* *Fwoong*
Bulb-ulb the Photosynthesis Pet Rock (Grass/Fire)
- A flower still not ready for blooming. Legend has it that once it blooms the power of the Sun will be unleashed.
Sunny liked the sound of that, the Power of the Su–
*Crack Cra-CRACK*
Come on let the poor boy finish his thoughts–
Congratulations! Your Egg hatched into a Kittea!
Alright… fine. This design was Sunny’s favorite so far, and it’s definitely not because it’s a little teacup with the liquid forming the face of a kitten. He just thought the idea was cool. Yup.
*Fwoop* *Fwoong*
Kittea the Poltergeist Beverage Pet Rock (Water)
- A lone teacup haunted by the wandering spirit of a lonely kitten. It is told that their former owner loved tea and it took the form of a teacup to remember them for all eternity.
… Well that’s sad–
*Crack Cra-CRACK*
For once it’s a good thing that’s being interrupted–
Congratulations! Your Egg hatched into a Chili Pupper!
So it seems Kittea has some competition for Sunny’s favorite design. A body of a red pepper with little green legs and paws, the tip becoming its nose with little chili seed eyes and green ears. Wrapping it all up with the green stem acting as its tail. Simplicity that went above and beyond.
*Fwoop* *Fwoong*
Chili Pupper the Hot Dog Pet Rock (Grass/Fire)
- A super spicy canine that if anything so much as touches it, they will be down for the count. Keep him away from parties though, people love to try their luck.
Yeesh, even reading that sounds painful.
…
…
Huh, no inter–
*Crack Cra-CRACK*
Okay I deserved that one.
Congratulations! Your Egg hatched into a Frost Mite!
Frost Mite, a small humanoid creature with closed eyes, icicles for hair, and a long flowing dress as snowflakes fall behind it. Again a simple design but one that works well.
*Fwoop* *Fwoong*
Frost Mite the Sub Zero Pet Rock (Ice)
- Due to its uncontrolled ice abilities, wherever it goes a strong snow storm follows. Forcing it to a long period of self isolation, hoping to gain control of its power.
What’s with all these tragic backstories?
*Crack Cra-CRACK*
Anyway, this is the last of the Pet Rocks.
Congratulations! Your Egg hatched into a W.H.S.D!
…Wha-What even is that? It’s just a white blob with two dots and a straight line for a mouth. And what does it’s name stand for–
W.H.S.D the Identity Thief Pet Rock (Normal?)
- It has an innate ability to copy the appearance of any Pet Rock it lays its eyes on. Doing so in hopes of finding an identity to call its own.
Okay why are all of these tragic? And what does it’s name mean—
“Oh wow, you got a rare one.” The girl commented.
“But… what is it?” Sunny asked.
“A W.H.S.D or a What Has Science Done, is a Pet Rock that is capable of transforming into any Pet Rock it battles, that includes its type, its ability, its moves, and even its stats. The downside is that W.H.S.D can only do that once per battle.”
“... Oh.” While it’s certainly a unique Pet Rock, Sunny had a hard time figuring out the practicality of it, or why it’s so rare.
“Anyway, now that you’ve obtained your Pet Rocks.” The girl got up and held out one of her own, “Battle me.”
Although Sunny is a bit nervous about being thrown into the lion's den immediately, he wasn’t one to back down from an honest challenge.
“Okay, I accept.”
Side Quest: New Rock on the Block
START!!
…
Baker Daphne has challenged Newcomer Sunny to a 2 on 2 Battle!
“Alright, I shall explain how battles work.” Daphne said, as Sunny looked at his Pet Rock, “On your screen you’ll see three icons. A rock , a piece of paper , and a pair of scissors. Each of those icons does a different thing. The Scissors make it so your next attack does double damage, the Rock makes it so the next attack your opponent does is negated at the cost of your next attack doing half damage, and the Paper makes it so you can do two attacks in the same turn at the cost of going last.”
Sunny filled that info into the back of his head, “So it’s Rock Paper Scissors but with more rules.”
“In a sense, yes.” Daphne agreed, “The effects of picking Scissors are canceled out by Rock, Rock is beat by Paper, and Paper is beat by Scissors.”
“I see.”
“Now, onto something a bit more nuanced. You’ll recall your Pet Rocks have a certain type to them, right?” Sunny nodded, “Well said types have resistances and weaknesses. For example your ‘Jash’ is weak to Fighting type moves, but resists moves of the Ghost type.”
“Makes sense, Ghosts phase through normal things.”
“Exactly, however, learning the strengths and weaknesses of every type is an arduous task. I haven’t even learned them all yet.”
‘ Another thing I need to look out for… ’
“Now that last time I wish to bring attention to, is the Abilities. Now each Pet Rock has an ability, in the case of my Son Chip it’s ‘Confection’ which allows it to take reduced damage from the Fire attacks by 50%. And in the case of your Jash, it has ‘Heart of the Underdog’ which grants it a 30% chance to survive a fatal hit.” Sunny filed that information in his head, “Now that should cover everything, let’s begin.”
With the tutorials out of the way, Sunny looked at his moves. Jash only had access to two moves, they being Tackle and Hype Up. Tackle only doing 40 damage while Hype Up boosts Jash’s Attack. ‘ The question becomes… What should I choose? The Scissors will help me right now… but Paper will help longer... ’ After pondering for a few more moments, Sunny made his selection.
Daphne chose Rock! Sunny chose Paper!
Son Chip uses Pre Heat!
*Click… Ding!*
*Fwowowowowop!*
Son Chip’s Special Attack rose! (+1)
Squashing the happy feeling that he made the right call, Sunny was faced with a new dilemma. Does he play it safe and buff once and attack? Or does he risk it all and go for the double Hype Up?
Jash uses Hype Up twice!
*Fwowowowowop!*
Jash’s Attack rose dramatically! (+2)
“An interesting gambit. Going for more attack power instead of attacking directly.”
“All I have to hope for is to counter-pick your selection.”
“Well we’ll see what happens.”
Now’s where things get interesting. With Jash’s attack raised so high Daphne has next to no choice but to pick Scissors or Rock, now does she play it safe and use Rock? Or does she go all in and use Scissors?
As for Sunny he has to figure out which one Daphne’s going to pick. Since Jash is so frail and Son Chip boosted it’s Special Attack one misstep could mean the loss of Jash. He could go for Rock should Daphne choose Scissors but he doesn’t want to deal half damage after wasting a turn using two Hype Ups, he could go for Paper but if she chose Scissors then all that set up will go to waste.
… He decided to throw all caution into the wind.
Daphne chose Scissors! Sunny chose Paper!
‘ Should have seen that coming. ’ Sunny winced.
Son Chip used Broil!
*Fwoooosh*
Son Chip dealt 39 damage to Jash!
Jash’s Heart of the Underdog Ability activates! He hung on for dear life!
‘... Well that was nice. ’
“You got lucky.” Sunny could not deny that in any way.
Jash uses Hype Up!
*Hmmph! Hmmph! Hmmph!*
*Fwowowowop!*
Jash’s Attack rose! (+3)
Jash used Tackle!
*Bam!*
Jash dealt 43 damage to Son Chip!
*Bzzt* *Peeeew*
Son Chip has been defeated!
With her first Pet Rock defeated and spewing out smoke, Daphne sent out her next one.
Daphne has sent out Ice Scream!
Daphne’s next Pet Rock is a floating ice cream cone with its face all mangled and deformed, and has an eerie smile.
“What’s that?”
“An Ice Scream, an Ice Ghost type.”
Ice Scream’s Snow Warning Ability activates!
*Fwinkwinkwinkwink*
Hail has entered the battle!
“Hail?”
“Oh, sorry I forgot to mention that. There are certain abilities and moves in the game that will change the weather in the battle. The different kinds of weather will do different things.”
“And what does Hail do?”
“Makes it so Ice and Fairy type moves do more damage, and any Pet Rocks that aren’t Ice type will be hurt by the hail.”
“Wait wha–”
Jash was buffeted by Hail!
*Nggh… mmph*
Jash was defeated.
…
…
“Well Jash did his job.” Now it’s Sunny’s turn to send out another Pet Rock, and after weighing his options Sunny found the perfect switch in.
Sunny sent out Frost Mite!
Frost Mite’s Hailfire Ability activates!
*Fwooooosh!*
A Fierce Snowstorm has entered the battle!
“And what does that do?”
“I’m… not quite sure? I’ve never seen it before.”
‘ Well I’ll assume that it’s a stronger hail. ’ Choosing to not focus on that for now, Sunny looked at Frost Mite’s moves. Cold Shoulder and Seclusion… well that’s apt. Cold Shoulder only does 30 damage with the chance of freezing the opponent, while Seclusion raises Frost Mite’s defense. ‘ Do I go for the same strategy as Jash? No, no I shouldn’t risk it with Fierce Snowstorm on the field and having no idea what it does. ’
Daphne chooses Scissors! Sunny chose Scissors!
“Wait, what happens here?”
“The moves still go through, but the damage boost effect is nullified.”
‘ Interesting… ’
Ice Scream uses Eery Smile!
*Shink*
*Bowowowop*
Frost Mite’s Speed Fell (-1)
Frost Mite uses Seclusion!
*Click* *Clink*
*Fwowowowop!*
Frost Mite’s Defense Rose (+1)
‘ I lost Speed but I gained some defense. ’
The Snowstorm Howls! Dealing Damage to both Ice Scream and Frost Mite!
“It hurts Ice Types?” Sunny asked as both of their creatures lost 25% of their health. “And it does that much?!”
As the harsh reality of the battle settled in for the two kids, with no other way to change the weather this battle will end in 3 turns maximum. That leaves Sunny in a huge predicament. ‘ Picking either of the choices makes sense here for Daphne, so the question is… what is she going to pick? ’
Rock, Paper, or Scissors. Sunny needs to pick which one she would pick. Think, was there any sign from her previous turns that could lead to her decision here?
…
…
‘ I think… no I know what she’s going to pick.’ With that declaration Sunny made his selection.
Daphne chose Scissors! Sunny chose Rock!
“I knew it. Outside of the first turn you’ve only chosen Scissors.” Daphne subtly flinched, her genius and subtle battle strategy has been figured out!
Ice Scream uses Frosty Breath!
*Fwink*
The effects were nullified!
Frost Mite uses Cold Shoulder!
*Mmmmm Fwink*
Frost Mite dealt 12 Damage to Ice Scream
It’s not very effective…
‘ But that’s fine. Because the snowstorm should be enough. ’
The Snowstorm Howls! Dealing Damage to both Ice Scream and Frost Mite!
‘It’s… it’s not! She has one more turn left! ’
…
…
‘ No, no there’s one right option for me to pick. ’
Daphne chose Paper! Sunny chose Scissors!
“That’s it, it’s over.” Daphne said, “Picking Rock wouldn’t have done anything with the half attack power, and picking Scissors would have been nullified.”
“Yeah, though it took me a second to think about that.”
Frost Mite used Cold Shoulder!
*Mmmmm Fwink*
Frost Mite dealt 7 to Ice Scream!
*GAAAAAAAHH!!*
Ice Scream was defeated!
Newcomer Sunny is the Winnner!!
“Congratulations Sunny.”
“Thanks, you did good too–”
*Beep*
You have obtained an Egg!
“... Huh?”
“Oh right, if you beat an opponent, you obtain an egg of one of their Pet Rocks. It doesn’t tell you which one it is unless you hatch it. It’s to make it easier to expand your team and get all of the Pet Rocks.” Daphne explained, “However, no one to this day has been able to obtain all of the Pet Rocks.”
“Really? Why?”
“... It’s an urban legend.” Oooh story time. “There have been mentions of a Legendary Pet Rock– No, the Ultimate Pet Rock. One so powerful that only one has ever been released to the public.”
“Really…?”
“Correct, and no one knows who has it. Was it sold to a collector? Has it been lost to time and getting every single Pet Rock is currently impossible? No one knows…” She looked around before leaning in, “But I believe someone does have it, and they’re lying in wait for the next worthy Pet Rock trainer to come and take it from them. Take their place and finally collect all of the Pet Rocks.”
Sunny just stared in awe… images in his imagination were flashing or him being crowned the Ultimate Pet Rock trainer, him hoisting up the last Pet Rock and being the first in the World to do so.
“But, that is all just a legend.” And just like that, Daphne stood up and dusted off her dress, “No one knows what happened to it, so odds are it’ll just get re-released–”
“I’m going to find it.”
“Pardon?”
“I’m gonna find it. Get all of the Pet Rocks, and be the Ultimate Pet Rock trainer.”
…
…
“Hmhmhm.” Daphne chuckled, “You know… if anyone was going to track down the holder and fight them for that Lost Pet Rock, I think it’d be you.”
“Thank you–?”
“Now come on. You beat me so it’s only fair that I give you a prize. A fresh loaf of Brioche on… my Mother’s tab.”
“... Bri– Brio– Huh?”
“Bree-oh-shh.”
“Bree-oh-shh… Brioche.”
“That’s it. And it’s the best bread you’ll ever taste. Now come on, I’d bet she’ll even show you how to make it!”
*Buh dududududududu* *Babadada dadadadaaa*
Daphne joined Sunny’s Party!
Daphne gently took Sunny’s hand and forcibly dragged him towards the bakery. “Let’s go!”
“W-Wait!”
Side Quest: New Rock on the Block
COMPLETE!!
…
“Daphne dear, who is this?” A tan woman with her hair tied in a bun asked, according to her name tag she’s Mrs. Baker.
“My new friend, mother. He beat me fair and square in a battle and now he is owed a loaf of brioche and wants to see how it’s made.” Daphne commented, hand still wrapped around Sunny’s but he doesn’t seem to mind.
“Oh really?” Mrs. Baker asked, “Now I don’t remember agreeing to this–”
“I can pay for it if you want?” Sunny offered.
“Oh dear it’s no trouble.” She replied with a smile, “I was about to make a new batch of Brioche dough so I can use the ones I made this morning. However, this one needs to learn the lesson on making bets with items she doesn’t have.”
Daphne winced slightly, “I… I have not the slightest clue what you could be implying.”
“Uh-huh.” Someone was going to get a long talking to when work is done. So she turned back towards Sunny, “Anyway, care to watch how to make it?” Sunny nodded with enthusiasm. “Alright now wash your hands, put on an apron, and pay attention. You too Daphne.” Not only does get to learn how to bake, but he also gets a cool apron! Best. Job. Ever.
Side Quest: Bread Making 101
START!!
With his apron tied around his waist, Sunny stood on the stool next to Daphne. “Now, the start of every loaf of bread is the ingredients. Now it’s important to measure everything properly. Too much or too little of one ingredient will lead to a loaf whose flavor or texture is a bit off.” To emphasize her point, she pulled out a weight scale and placed it on the counter. “Now, before you even consider making your own bread, this item is essential.”
*THUD*
“A stand mixer.”
“Woah…” Sunny muttered.
“This device can do anything and everything you’d need for baking. Mixing, kneading, and with extra accessories it can make pasta and even grind meat.” She gave it a gentle pat, “The problem however… is that it’s rather expensive. But if you can afford one, it will make your life in the kitchen a lot easier.”
Sunny knew then and there, what he was going to make his Grandfather get him for Christmas.
…
“Brrr…”
“Hmm? What’s wrong dear? Feeling the chills of death looming over you finally?”
“Honey you’re older than me, and no it’s… something else.” Grandpa Ryōri Musōka muttered, “I think… I think Sunny’s going to want something very expensive for Christmas.”
“Oh dear you’re exaggerating.” Meanwhile his wife, Emma 'Em' Musōka waved off his worries, “He’s 4 years old, and besides this is Sunny we’re talking about. The most he’d ask for is… I don’t know a deck of playing cards, or a new comic book.”
As much as he’d love to agree with his wife and squash the dread he feels in his heart and wallet, he knows he’s in for a financially bad time come December 26th.
…
“Okay that’s 510g of all purpose flour, 60g of granulated sugar, 14g of active dry yeast, and lastly 15g of kosher salt.” She then dug into her drawer and pulled out a comically thin whisk.
“Why a super small whisk.”
“Because child, no one should underestimate the powers of the Tiny Whisk.” She said before whisking the dry ingredients together, “And a thin whisk like this is more efficient at digging at every square inch of the bowl to mix thoroughly.”
“Ohh.”
“Anyway that should be good.” Setting her whisk aside, Mrs. Baker grabbed a carton of eggs. “Now we need four, room temperature eggs, that part matters the most as we don’t want any cold liquids in this recipe for a rather tedious step later on.”
*Crack* *Crack* *Crack* *Crack*
“Now that our four eggs are in, we attach this.” She pulled out a large plastic hook, “This is called a Dough Hook, this will not only mix the ingredients for you but also knead your dough.”
*Click-lick*
“Attach it and let it go on medium speed for about… four to six minutes. There isn’t a concrete time because bread making and its speed is dependent on about a million different factors. So at this point you’re going to have to use your eyes.”
After a few minutes, the dough comes together into a yellow blob. “It’s done… now.” Mrs. Baker immediately stops the machine and lifts the hook with the dough still on it out of the bowl, “See it still looks lumpy but certain parts of it look smooth, that’s the sign that we go to the next step… and it’s a test of endurance.”
“What do you mean?” Sunny asked, watching her scrape the dough off the hook and reach for the bowl that contained a stick of butter.
“Basically, we need to mix this butter with the dough. Sounds simple right?” Sunny slowly nodded his head, “Well I wish it was that simple, but we have to slowly mix in the butter and only small amounts at a time. If we add too much or go too fast then the dough will break and become an oily shaggy mess. As far as I know in my years of baking there isn’t a fix to that other than starting over from step one.”
The thought of having to do this… roughly 15 minute process over again made Sunny wince inside.
“But we should be fine, I’ve made many loaves of Brioche so I know how to do it… the problem? Well… this will take a while. A LONG while.”
Sunny did not need to be told twice and sat down on his stool, bracing himself for the long buttery process.
…
30, yes I mean that, 30 minutes later and the butter is incorporated fully. Hallelujah.
“Now that we’re finally done with that we’ll set the mixer to medium speed and allow the dough to knead for about… five to eight minutes. You can tell when it’s ready when the dough almost cleans the bowl entirely.”
Five to eight minutes later, Mrs. Baker turns off the machine and lifts the dough off of the dough. “There we go, perfect. Now, baking is a rather imprecise art. So the best way to confirm if we did our job right is to feel it. Come on then, give it a little poke.”
Although a little hesitant, Sunny gave the dough a small poke. “It’s… soft. Soft and… a bit smooth?”
“Correct. Remember that feeling, that texture. The softness combined with the silkiness and smoothness of the butter. That. Is a proper Brioche dough.”
“Woah…” Never has Sunny expected to be mesmerized by dough, but life is full of surprises.
“Now that the hardest part is over, it’s time to roll it into a taut ball.” She plopped the dough onto her countertop, “Alright you’re going to help me do this.”
“Me?”
“Correct, this is a lesson, remember? I only did the hardest part because messing it up means losing money.” Made sense to Sunny, one of his Grand Aunties said that messing up is bad for the company. “Now, find the smoothest part of the dough.”
With a nod, Sunny began moving the dough ball around, until he found the side with no lumps or splits. “Is this it?”
“Yup, now have it face towards the sky and begin passing it between your hands.” Mrs. Baker demonstrated the technique, lightly passing the dough ball around with her hands, “While you’re doing this, also pinch the edges against the table like so.” As she was passing the ball around, she lowered her hands to pinch the edges of the ball underneath the table. “That way the top will be super taut, which is what we want.” And with that, she stepped away from the dough. “Alright, your turn.”
“Okay!” Remember the techniques Sunny. He began passing the dough between his hands, all the while doing the ‘Edge Pinching™’ Technique, and after a little bit a taut ball was achieved. “Did I do it right?”
“Perfect.” Mrs. Baker then pulled out a bowl. “Now with a well oiled bowl we plop the dough inside, cover it in plastic wrap, and let it rise for 60 to 90 minutes.”
…
…
“Huh?” While Sunny was rather committed to this baking lesson, he wasn’t prepared for waiting an hour for it.
“Yup, you got to work for your bread.”
… Welp, guess we’re in it for the long haul–
*Clank*
“Is what I would say if I didn’t make one a few hours ago before you came here.”
…
…
‘ That’s the second time I’ve been duped… and it was by two members of the same family. ’ Today was not Sunny’s day.
“Now that we have risen dough, we gotta set it out on a well oiled countertop and…”
*Whack*
“Punch it.”
… Sunny just witnessed an assault on an unsuspecting pile of dough. And he’s not sure whether to be entertained by the act of violence or call the police. Wait… does dough even have rights?
“Does dough have rights?” Sunny asked out of the blue.
…
…
“Pfft!” That question got a chuckle out of Daphne, who has been completely bored during this lesson.
“Last I checked no. The legislation doesn’t view dough as a priority.” Mrs. Baker jokes, charmed by the random yet genuine question.
“... Lesigation?”
“Don’t think about it too hard.” Mrs. Baker quickly recomposed herself, “Anyway now that we’ve punched our dough, we need to help develop its gluten network. Gluten is what helps dough rise, so in order to produce more gluten networks we need to fold the dough in on itself.” She then grabbed the edges of the dough and began folding it in on itself. “You need to do this about five… six… maybe seven… no eight. Definitely eight times.”
…
…
“Ehh nine folds won’t hurt.” Before Sunny could question… anything about what she just did, Mrs. Baker rolled the dough into a taut ball and plopped it into another bowl. “After effectively developing the gluten networks.” Might want to put asterisks around ‘Effectively’ there, “We have two options. Either let it rise for an hour and make whatever you wish out of it, or the second option, and the option I recommend, is to let it sit in the fridge for about 12 to 48 hours. Doing so will improve the flavor and texture.”
“B-But that’s–”
“A long time? Yes, yes it is. Which is why we make multiple batches of dough ahead of time and replace the ones we’ve used. That will ensure we have batches of Brioche at the ready. However it’s a system that leaves no room for error, if we forget to make more batches then everything falls apart.”
“That sounds bad.”
“It is. It definitely is bad.” Mrs. Baker said, putting the bowl of dough in the fridge while pulling out another one. “This one has been in there for almost the full 48 hours, so let’s use this one.”
She pried the dough out of the bowl and plopped it on the countertop, “Now, depending on what you’re using the dough for, you’ll have to divide it. Since we’re making loaves we’ll have to divide it in half.” Pulling out a bench scraper she divides the dough in half, before sprinkling bits of flour onto the countertop, “Now on a generously floured work surface, get a rolling pin and roll the dough out into a rectangle about as wide as the loaf pan you’re using.”
Demonstrating, she rolled out the dough into a rectangle shape, before holding the loaf pan against the width of the dough. “Should be about that size, but going a little over is okay.” Mrs. Baker then grabbed the rolled out dough and turned it 90 degrees, “Now roll the dough up width rise– I mean wise, width wise, so it’d fit into the pan and tuck the seams beneath the roll.”
Grabbing the loaf pan from earlier, she grabbed some butter and a paper towel, rubbing it against the walls and floor of the pan. Afterwards she dusted the insides generously with flour, “With a generously buttered and floured pan, plop the dough in…”
*ZIIIIIP*
“And loosely tent it with plastic wrap to let it rise for about an hour. Now.”
*Clang*
“Your turn to do it with the other half of the dough.”
“Huh? Me?”
“Yup, but don’t worry. I know you can do it.”
With renewed confidence thanks to Mrs. Baker’s words, Sunny liberally dusted some flour on his side–
*Achoo*
Okay maybe a bit too liberally, as an annoyed Daphne was rubbing her irritated nose, “Oops, sorry Daphne.”
With apologies out of the way and rolling pin in hand, Sunny started to roll the dough out. ‘ Okay… rectangle, as wide as the loaf pan. ’
…
…
“Hmm… I think I did it?” Sunny asked, holding the loaf pan against the width of the dough.
“Yeah you did, good job.” A small smile graced Sunny’s face, “Now roll it back up and put it in the pan.” Before he realized that there was a part two for this.
“R-Right.” Remembering Mrs. Baker’s technique, Sunny picked up and rotated the dough 90 degrees and began rolling it up width wise and tucked the seams below it. He then picked it up to put into the pan–
“Hold it,” But Mrs. Baker stopped him. “You’re forgetting some steps.”
“... Huh?” He thought about it for about 3 seconds, “... Oh right, the butter and flour.” Catching his mistake Sunny gently placed the dough back onto the counter before buttering and flouring the pan. “Am I good now?”
“Yes you can put the dough in now.” With those words of confirmation, Sunny plopped the dough inside and loosely tented it with plastic wrap.
“Good work.” Mrs. Baker praised, “Now we have to let these rise for about an hour and a half.” Sunny’s heard that before, “Until they double in size… like this.” She said as she laid out two other loaf pans with pre-risen blobs of dough. “To know if they’re truly ready, give them a poke.” To demonstrate, she removed the plastic wrap from both pans and gave each blob a poke, the small indent in both were slowly reforming back to normal. “See? It doesn’t spring back up fast when poked. That means they’re ready for the oven.”
*Clank*
“After a little brush with egg wash.”
“... Egg wash?”
“It’s a beaten egg that you would brush over dough to get a nice golden brown surface. Trust me, it’s an almost vital step.” Filling that into his memory, Sunny watched Mrs. Baker apply the egg wash before walking over to the oven, “All that’s left to do is plop them into a 375 Degree Fahrenheit oven for about 45 minutes.”
…
…
“I don’t have a premade example for this one, so you’re actually going to have to wait.”
“Oh…” Well that’s… awkward. ‘ So… what do I do now– ’
“Well there’s no purpose to waiting here.” Daphne said, before gently grabbing Sunny’s hand, “Come on, let’s do something to pass the time.”
“O-Okay?” Sunny asked, being dragged away once again by the hands of Daphne Baker. (Hands that Sunny found soft and warm, but don’t tell anyone he thought this, it’s a secret!)
“Be back soon, and don’t wander too far!”
“Understood Mother!”
Welp, guess it’s time to explore more of Othermart.
…
“So… where are we going?” Sunny asked.
“Well you’re still new here, so it’s best to introduce yourself to your neighbors.” Daphne replied, walking up to the Fish Market, “So let’s start here. Hello Mrs. Yú.”
“嗯?誰的--” The older woman shook her head, “Sorry, habit. Hello Daphne, who is this?”
“This is someone who has recently moved in. His name is Sunny.”
“N-Nice to meet you.” He stuttered, nervous after being thrust into meeting a new face.
“Oh how precious!” Mrs. Yú gushed, before she got an idea, “Say… how would you like to earn some money?”
The mention of money got Sunny’s attention, and earned a sigh from Daphne, “Flies again?”
“Those pesky things keep messing with my wares! There are five of them roaming around here… waiting for their chance to strike.” She reached below her counter and pulled out a Flyswatter, “Here is your weapon…”
Sunny was loaned the Flyswatter.
- A deadly weapon with rather pitiful range, gotta be really sneaking to defeat those pesky Flies.
“He didn’t even get a chance to say whether or not he would–”
“I will not let you down…” But Sunny was too far gone, he had a small flying enemy to vanquish. And while Daphne was endeared by how quickly he got into the job… she knew from past experience this was gonna take a bit.
Side Quest: The Flythom Menace
START!!
…
If there was any consolation for Daphne, who had pulled up a nearby foldable chair, she found watching Sunny miss and get upset was kinda funny.
*Plap*
“Mmph!”
“Snrk!” Only this time, she let out a little giggle.
“And what’s so funny?”
“Nooothing.” She replied, not at all playing coy in the slightest.
But now Sunny was determined to kill all these flies. His pride and money was on the line, so he locked the FS Foils in attack position. “It’s swatting time…”
“Pfft! Ha!”
“What now?!”
“Sorry sorry it’s just… It’s swatting time? That’s your catchphrase?”
Sunny turned bright red and subconsciously stomped his right foot, “I-I want a new partner! One that doesn’t laugh at me!”
Daphne let out another laugh before rolling her eyes, “Well until you finish up with the flies you’re stuck with me. Now, as you said, it’s swatting time.”
With a shattered ego, Sunny managed to kill all the flies. Once he and Daphne returned the flyswatter, Mrs. Yú held out two 10 dollar bills. “Here you are for a job well done.” Sunny swiftly took both bills.
Sunny has obtained 20 dollars somewhat illegally!
- This money was obtained in an under the table fashion. No one tell the IRS.
“Ahem…” but Daphne held out her hand, “I do believe one of those is mine?”
“What do you mean? I did all of the work.” I mean he has a point…
“I provided support.” Ooh counterpoint.
“By making fun of me?” Oh snap! A counter-counterpoint!
“Of course! Me teasing you about you missing and your lame catchphrase made you work harder!” Curses, the triple counter. Sunny can’t beat that! Her cheeky smile also isn’t helping matters.
“... I’m being robbed.” He muttered, before begrudgingly handing the smirking Daphne her share of the money.
Sunny has been extorted of 10 dollars.
“Good work partner.” She said, giving Sunny a pat on the head, “Now let’s go check out the Pharmacy.”
“Why are–” Oop she grabbed his hand again, “W-Wait a minute!”
“No time to talk, let’s go!”

…
“Does that… no… maybe?”
“Hello Mr. Reed.”
“Huh?” The Pharmacist, Mr. Reed, looked up from the box, “Aah Daphne, a pleasure to see you… and whose this?”
“He moved into town yesterday, this is Sunny.”
“H-Hello! N-Nice to meet you.”
“The pleasure is all mine.” He said with a smile before looking down at the box. “However I’m currently working at the moment.”
Daphne looked over his shoulder, “More medical stuff?”
“Correct, the problem is that I’ve received two shipments of wares, but the contents weren’t in separate boxes but rather in two large boxes. So I have to sort them out.”
A tedious and time consuming conundrum indeed… “Need any help?” Sunny offered.
Now, any other day the Pharmacist would have said ‘No, thank you’ due to not wanting children touching unknown medical supplies… However, today of all days is his anniversary with his wife, and they have Reservations at 5:30. So… just this once… “That… would be greatly appreciated.”
Determined to help, Sunny was making his way to the second box to start, “Will we be rewarded?” But Daphne asked the hard hitting question.
Before Sunny could comment, Mr. Reed chuckled, “Nothing gets past you Daphne. I will of course pay you both for your services… along with another reward as a bonus.” That was all Daphne needed to hear.
“Alright Sunny, let’s get started.”
“Right!”

Sunny didn’t know what was in that box, but knowing it was ‘Doctor Stuff’ he knew he had to be delicate. He might break something and make Mr. Reed angr–
*Fwump* *Thud*
Or Daphne can just throw all caution into the wind and knock the box over, spilling all of the contents on the floor. “Looks like there’s bandages, toothpaste, some small diapers, and I don’t know what that plastic tub is.” Daphne listed, “So there are four types of items, let’s sort them out first so we can put them on the shelves easier.”
“Right.” They split the items. Daphne took the bandages and the toothpaste, while Sunny got the diaper looking things and plastic tubs with a weird name that Sunny couldn’t pronounce. “Va…vase… Mr. Reed?”
“Yes Sunny?”
“What’s this?” He asked, holding up the tub.
“Oh that’s Vaseline.”
“Va. Se. Line. What’s that?”
“It’s basically a cream that people put on their skin if it becomes too dry.”
“Dry?”
“Dry skin can flake, itch, crack, and in bad situations… bleed. Vaseline helps prevent that.”
“Ooh.”
“It can even help minor cuts on the skin heal faster if you add a little bit to it.”
Sunny felt that he understood the lesson, setting the tub of Vaseline down with the others. But he had one more question, “Mr. Reed?”
“Yes, Sunny?”
“Why do these diapers look different?”
Hearing that made Mr. Reed pause, ‘ I never ordered– Wait. ’ “Umm… I’ll explain more about that when you’re older.”
“But–”
“It’s… complicated.”
…
…
“Okay?” Confused but not bothered, Sunny placed the box of weird diapers with the others. After about 10 minutes of sorting, four neat piles of supplies were ready to be placed on the shelves. Then after another 20 minutes the wares have been neatly placed on the shelves.
“Excellent work you two.” Mr. Reed said, handing both 10 dollars for their work. “Now, your other reward.” He then handed them both thin hard cover books.
Sunny has obtained a Beginners Guide to First Aid!
- An informational book detailing the basics of First Aid. All around good skills to learn if you’re prone to getting hurt.
“Umm... What’s this?” Daphne asked.
“They’re books. Beginners Guide to First Aid.” He pointed to the bandage on Sunny’s forehead, “Should you ever get hurt and no one else is around it’d be smart to know how to take care of yourself.”
While Daphne didn’t see the inherent value in the book, Sunny thought it was super valuable… especially since his next door neighbor loves to sneak up on him, he can see many injuries in the coming future. “Thank you sir.”
“Yeah, thanks.”
Mr. Reed just laughed, “Don’t sound too excited there Daphne.” The call out made a small blush appear on her tan cheeks, “Anyway I’m sure you two have something much better to do than to hang around in a Pharmacy. Run along now.”
“He’s right, Sunny.” Oh she’s grabbing the hand again. “Come on, our last stop is the Candy Store. Time to spend our hard earned money.”
“Okay.” This time Sunny didn’t resist and just happily let himself be dragged by Daphne.
Meanwhile Mr. Reed just smiled, “I remember when I was young…”

After leaving the Pharmacy, the young pair decided to check on the loaves of Brioche. “Hello Mother, how are the loaves coming along?”
“They’re almost done.”
*Crackle*
“Just 10 more minutes. Oh and Sunny, another point about Brioche is that the tops might brown too quickly, as a result it might get burned before it’s finished baking. To remedy that, cover it with aluminum foil to protect them. Understood?”
“Yup.”
“Then with that, the Brioche lesson is complete. Good work my young apprentice.”
Well in that case... ahem.

"Now run along you two. No sense wasting the day hanging around here." Daphne didn’t need to be told twice as she continued dragging Sunny along.
“Thank you Mrs. Baker!” Sunny yelled the loudest he could (which wasn't loud at all) as she just waved. Watching the pair disappear into the hall towards the Candy Store.
“Aah to be young again.”
…
“And here we are. Sweet Hearts. Your one and only stop shop for all your candy needs.”
“Woah…” To say the Candy Store had an expansive inventory would be an understatement. So many varieties of candy ranging from gummies, to chocolates, to jawbreakers, to… blegh mint flavored candy.
“But that’s not all… see this is a family owned business, and every Saturday they make this special Fudge Brownie.” Daphne explained, “Legend has it the recipe started all the way back in 1867, back when the original owner ran a bakery in the Midwest. The recipe got passed down through each generation of owners, with each one making tweaks to the recipe as new cooking techniques come to light and new ingredients become more readily available.”
“Wow… wait.” Sunny just had an epiphany, “Today is Friday.”
“Yup, which means tomorrow the best brownies ever will be available. They might even be better than my Mo–”
“Are you two going to buy something? Or are you just going to stand there?” A rather rude pink haired teenager asked, as she stood behind the counter.
“O-Oh sorry–”
“Candice, what did I say about being polite to customers?” A second person entered the fray, as a tall brown haired woman tied her apron while standing behind the counter, her tag said ‘Ms. Hart'. “Sorry about my daughter, welcome to Sweet Hearts… oh I don’t think I recognize you.”
“He’s–”
“I-I’m new here. I’m Sunny.”
“Sunny… I’ll remember that. Now let me see if I still got it.” The woman leaned down to look Sunny in the eyes, causing him to lightly wiggle from the gaze, “Hmm… though you’re more of a pastry boy, I can tell that you like candies that have a soft chewy texture rather than hard candy.”
“Wha? How did–”
“In terms of flavor you aren’t particularly picky, but if you had a choice you vastly prefer candies that taste like fruits… specifically… strawberry. But you despise anything that tastes like cherries.”
Hearing the word ‘cherry’ made Sunny internally squirm, the taste of that God awful cough syrup still lingers on his tongue.
“But the one type of candy you love. The one you can’t get enough of… is chocolate. But not 100% chocolate, has to be either milk or white chocolate. Nuts optional but appreciated in moderation. And bonus points if it basically melts in your mouth.”
…
…
“Did I get it right?”
“H-How did you?”
The woman chuckled, “Why do you think we’re still in business? The minute a customer steps foot in here I know what they like. Just like how Daphne over there loves gummy bears, while her brother adores gummy worms.”
“Which she’s correct about.”
“And like how Kim and Vance love taffy so much, they’ll do anything to get it.”
*BANG* *CLANK*
“Shoot, run Kim!”
*Beep* *Click*
But it was too late, with quick reflexes, Ms. Hart locked the door with a simple push of a remote control button. “Love this thing. Now, both of you, front and center.” Dejected, a tall (and rather rotund) boy and a younger straight haired girl walked to the counter. “What did you get?” They placed their bags full of taffy. “Is that all of it?”
“Yes, Ms. Hart…”
“I’ll give you both the benefit of the doubt, even though at this point I really shouldn’t. Now… this looks to be about… 15 dollars in Taffy. I assume you two don’t have the money to pay for it?” They both shook their heads, “So either put this candy back, or I’ll call your mother and she’ll pay for it.”
“Y-You have–”
“Kim, this is about the 7th time this has happened. Of course I have your mother’s phone number. So what will it be–”
*Plap*
“I’ll take both bags, this chocolate bar, and this little bag of Smooches please.” Sunny said, placing the chocolate bar and two 10 dollar bills on the counter. “Should be about 20 dollars right?”
“Are you sure kid?”
Sunny grabbed the bags of taffy and handed them back to Kim and Vance, “Yes.”
“... Alright then.”
*Clack* *Clack* *Ding*
“And you two, what do you say?”
Vance said “Thanks…” While Kim just pouted and lightly grumbled about something.
“Good enough.” Mrs. Hart said before handing Sunny his candy in a little baggie. “And here you are Sunny.”
“Thank you Ma’am.”
She smiled before looking at Daphne, “What about you dear? Do you want something?”
“Huh? Oh no sorry ma’am, but do expect me here tomorrow for those brownies.”
Ms. Hart let out a laugh, “Of course, we expect a lot of people here tomorrow for those.”
“Great, come on Sunny.”
…
…
“Sunny?” Halfway through the doorway, Daphne looked back at Sunny… who simply held his hand out, “... Oh right.” Walking back, Daphne gently took Sunny’s hand, “Is that all?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Alright, let’s go.” With a renewed stride, Daphne exited the candy shop with Sunny trotting behind her.
“Aah kids,” Ms. Hart sighed, remembering her younger years, “Anyway you two– Wait, where’s Kim?”
…
“Mom should be done–”
“H-Hey!” Near the end of the tunnel, the duo turned to see the younger sister of Vance.
“... Kim, right?” Sunny asked.
“Yeah, and who do you think you are? Paying for my candy?!”
…
…
Well now Sunny was confused, a girl was mad at him for buying her candy… ‘ Mom said buying girls gifts makes them happy. Did she lie to me?! ’
“Kim, calm down.” Luckily Daphne is here to save the day.
“No! Not until he apologizes!”
…
…
“I’m sorry?” Sunny was getting a glimpse into the complexity that is angry girls.
“For?”
“For… buying you taffy?”
“And?!”
“A-And not getting you some fudge too?”
“... Fudge does sound very good. No, bad Kim! You’re supposed to be angry!” Getting her game face back on, she pointed at Sunny, “In order to make it up to me, you have to…”
…
…
“... I have to?”
“Shut it! I need time!” She yelled, before twiddling her fingers together, “You have to… let me come with you guys.”
Daphne and Sunny looked at each other, “That’s it?”
Well that made her angry again, “Hey! What do you mean–” But she was instantly shut down when Daphne grabbed her hand, “H-Hey!”
“Welcome to the team, let’s go!” And with that Daphne began dragging both kids.
“W-Why are–”
“It’s fine Kim.”
“B-But– mrrgh… *grumble* *grumble*.”
*Buh dududududududu* *Babababa dadadadaaa*
Kim ‘joined’ Sunny’s Party!
…
“Mother, is the loaf done yet?”
“I see you’ve gotten a new member.” Mrs. Baker quipped, as Kim shuffled behind Daphne in embarrassment. “And yes, the loaf is done baking. It does however need to rest for about 1 and a half hours.”
Oh great, more waiting… Well, if Sunny’s good at one thing (besides video games, being a ninja, baking, swatting flies, organizing, and buying candy) it's finding something to do–
“Hello Brie.” How convenient, a middle aged woman walked up to the bakery.
“Oh Beverly, welcome. And the entire family? What’s the occasion?”
“Well, my eldest son and daughter are on their way to College after the summer, so to celebrate we are here for some of your delectable pastries.”
“Oh congratulations to you two.”
“Thank you Mrs. Baker.” The college bound twins commented… at the same time… with the same tone.
‘ And I thought Daphne and Bowen were the only two that did that… ’ Mrs. Baker shook that thought out of her mind. “Anyway I see Ken and little Charlie… but where’s Miracles, Clare, and Tucker?”
“Well Miracles has Summer School, wanting to finish some extra classes so she can have an easy Senior year. Clare is doing a summer program to get ahead for her Freshman year and met her new classmates early, and Tucker… well…”
“Is he still playing that computer game?”
“The same one…”
“Well… at least he has a hobby?” Mrs. Baker said, trying her best to salvage… him.
“At least… Anyway, where are my manners? Hello Daphne, Kim I see you back there.” Kim retreated further behind Daphne, “Oh, pardon me I don’t think I’ve met you.”
“He’s a part of the new family that moved in last night.”
“M-My name is Sunny.”
“Oh! Hello there young man, nice to meet you.” Ms. Beverly greeted, “Everyone, don't be shy, introduce yourself to your new neighbor.”
“Hello there Sunny.” Yup, still unsettling.
“Hey.” Ken kept his greeting simple.
“I-I’m Charlene.” The girl his age muttered with a shy wave.
“Well now that introductions are over.” Mrs. Baker said with a clap, “Let me… actually.” Sunny didn’t like the look she gave him, “Sunny, hop on back here. You’re going to help me.”
“M-Me?”
“I don’t see anyone else named Sunny in the vicinity. Don’t worry I won’t make you do anything outside of your skill level… and in fact do well and I’ll give you a reward.”
…
…
Well now she has his attention. “Got it.”
“Good, now put on your apron.”
“... Yes, ma’am.”

“Here’s how this will work. You’re going to listen to their orders. After they’re finished you’ll repeat everything back to me. Got it?”
“Yes boss.”
"Alright, we’ll start with little Charlie.”
“U-Umm… I’ll just have a glazed donut with rainbow sprinkles.” Sunny was thankful it was a simple order.
“I will have a twisted donut with powdered sugar, please.” Another easy one.
“We will have one donut.” The twins said, “Mine will be jelly filled.” The boy twin said, “And mine will be cream filled.” And the girl twin replied afterwards… And yes, Sunny was caught off guard by them speaking at different times.
Anyway all and all these were easy to remember… “And I will have… ahem.” I think I spoke too soon– “One glazed donut with chocolate sprinkles, two jelly filled donuts, a cinnamon roll, a chocolate cake donut, a dozen donut holes to go with one long donut filled with chocolate cream, and to wrap it all up… a whole wheat donut.”
…
…
In his four years of living, and one year of being able to think properly, never has Sunny despised someone as much as he despised Ken right now. Must be a World Record.
“Ken, we have a budget.” Luckily Ms. Beverly came in to save the day.
“Oh you’re right. I’ll take every other item I said.” Sunny didn’t know what was worse. The needlessly complicated order, or that challenging smirk on his face.
“Sunny you don’t have–”
“Glazed donut, twisted with powdered sugar.” But Sunny responded to Ken’s challenge by rattling off orders, “Two donuts, one jelly filled and one cream filled… and finally.” Sunny took a deep breath, “A jelly donut, a cinnamon roll, a dozen donut holes, and a whole wheat donut. Scratch the glazed donut with chocolate sprinkles, the other jelly donut, the chocolate cake donut, and the long donut with chocolate cream.”
While a bit shaken up by Sunny’s memory, Ken wasn’t deterred, “Hold on, I ordered two jelly donuts. Why are you only giving me one?” He challenged.
“You said every other item. So, using your specification, and treating each donut as an individual item, even though you ordered two you’re only getting one.” Now it’s Sunny’s turn to smirk, “Any other questions?”
“Well that’s… I… uhh…” He was trying to find a counter argument… he was trying so hard. ‘ H-How is this kid so smart?! ’
“By technicality Ken, he’s correct.” Until his older brother stepped in, and Sunny was basking in his success–
“Yup… Sunny’s 95% right.” Well that lasted about 2 seconds.
“W-What do you–” But then Sunny realized his mistake. “Sorry, glazed donut… WITH rainbow sprinkles.”
“There you go. 100% accuracy.” Mrs. Baker said, setting the box full of donuts on the counter, along with a smaller box full of donut holes on top of it. “So that’ll come out to… 17.52.”
“Which is luckily… just within our budget.” Ms. Beverly said, ruffling her son’s hair much to his annoyance. “Excellent work Sunny.”
“Huh?” Sudden praise, his only weakness, “I– Thank you.”
Smiling at his bashfulness, Ms. Beverly paid for the fried pastries and accepted her change, “Well we best be going now. I promised I would pick up the girls from school so they won’t have to walk in the heat.”
“That’s a good idea, it’s getting warmer out there.” Hearing that made Sunny realize he was in this air conditioned grocery store for far too long, and is dreading having to go back outside in the Summer heat. “Now, I do believe someone is due for payment and a reward.” Nevermind, screw the heat, it's reward time baby.
“Really?”
“Of course, if I didn’t pay my workers I’d lose my business.”
“Is that so–”
“You’re paid in your weekly allowance Daphne.”
“Wha– I wasn’t–”
“Anyway,” Ignoring her pouting daughter, Mrs. Baker laid out a crisp 10 dollar bill, which Sunny pocketed instantly, “Now for your reward… tada!”
Sunny has obtained an ‘Official Baker’ Apron
- This cloth apron is the mark of a true baker! It’s adult sized however, so he has a long way to go…
“Mom…” Daphne immediately saw the obvious problem, “That’s way to big–”
“Tada.” Sunny meanwhile… didn’t really care and put it on immediately.
“... You were saying.” And Mrs. Baker gave her daughter the smuggest face she could muster.
“... He could still trip with that thing.”
“Well good thing he has two big strong girls to protect him.”
“But that’s–”
“Daphne?”
“Huh?” Her retort was cut off by Sunny worming his hand into Daphne’s, “Are we going to go?”
…
…
“Don’t you say anything Mom.”
“Who me? I would neeever…” The smirk on her face said otherwise. To avoid further embarrassment, Daphne took Kim’s hand and dragged her along, much to the latter’s vocal disapproval. Mrs. Baker smiled and wiped down the counter.
“The future is looking to be very interesting…”

“So… where to now?” That’s the question on Sunny’s mind at the moment. With Othermart fully conquered, all that’s left is the park… or the shop with the broken sign, holes in the roof, and large quantities of trash littering the area… Which is ironically called ‘Fix It’.
“Hmm… let’s go to the park.”
“Understood, Captain.” And with that, the dragging continued. With Sunny paying extra mind to not trip on his large apron they made it to the par–
“I can’t believe you right now.”
“Karen please? I love you?” Uh-oh… trouble’s a-brewing, as the trio noticed a pair of teenagers sitting on a park bench. A boy trying to reason with a girl in a rose decorated sun dress, who was turned away from him in an annoyed pout.
“You brought me out here in the blazing heat just to sit down on this bench?”
“Guess the park is out of the question, right Sunny?” Kim asked, looking to her left to see…
*Blink* *Blink* *Blink*
A bunch of air where Sunny once stood. “S-Sunny?”
“H-How did he?” Daphne asked, before noticing Sunny had stealthily moved behind the arguing couple.
‘ Sunny Holmes is back on the case. The Angry Pair Caper… ’ Getting back into his Sunny Holmes persona, his goal was to stop this bickering young couple if it’s the last thing he did. ‘ Like Mom always said, gifts make girls happy… So what would this girl want? ’
‘ Hmm… judging from her prior declarations, she obviously desires something to do. A game perhaps? She also mentioned the sweltering heat, so maybe something to help cool off or something to block out the sun for her. An umbrella and a cold beverage… or maybe some ice cream? Ice cream does sound good… ’
Sunny rapidly shook his head, ‘ Focus Sunny Holmes, we’ve almost cracked this case. Now while those are nice gestures, she might want something more. A finishing gift if you will! But what? What could that be…?’
…
…
‘ Is that… a rose hair clip? Of course, it matches with the rose sundress she’s wearing! She must have an affinity with roses. That’s it! The perfect trio of gifts!’
“Sunny what–”
“There’s no time. We have things to do.”
“Wha–” This time Sunny was the one doing the hand holding, “Wait a minute–”
“I’ll explain on the way.” And with that… they were gone.
“Were they there the whole time?”
“Still not talking to you.”
“Oh come on!”
Ouch… well hopefully Sunny, Daphne, and Kim can fix this.

“Sunny would you stop–”
“Okay this is far enough.” Sunny said as they were dragged back to the Faraway Plaza. “We’re going to help them.”
“W-We are?”
“Yup.” Sunny dug into his pocket and handed the girls 40 bucks. “You two buy a portable umbrella, some ice cream, and some drinks.”
“Hold on, wait a minute.” Kim said, putting a temporary stop to this whole operation, “Why are we helping two random strangers with their… their weird problems?”
…
…
Sunny tilted his head, “Why not?”
“What do you mean, ‘Why not’? You’re literally spending your own money to help people you don’t even know!”
“Like I did for you?”
“Exactly! So why?! That’s not normal!”
And to further her own confusion, Sunny just shrugged, “I don’t really know. I think it’s because I like seeing people smile. It… well it feels nice.”
“W-Wha–” But before Kim could even think of a counter argument, Sunny began shoving her towards Othermart.
“There’s no time to waste, go buy the stuff.”
“But that’s…” Realizing that arguing about things she didn’t understand would only give her a headache she just sighed, “Fine. But I’m buying myself something too!”
“Okay, you do that I’m going to check out Hobbeez to see if they sell flowers there.”
“Wait.” Kim spoke out, stopping Sunny’s march, “They don’t, but they do at Fix It.” Huh, never would have guessed that run down shack sold flowers, “Got it, thanks Kim.”
“You’re wel– Hey don’t thank me!”
“Don’t hurt yourself yelling too much Kim, let’s go.” And with that, Daphne dragged her inside Othermart. Leaving our own here to his own errands.
“Okay, Fix It first, then I’ll go to Hobbeez.” With his battle plan settled, Sunny marched into the store… and was amazed by all the stuff inside it.
Potted flowers, paint samples, tools, to even large things like lamps, fences, glass sliding doors. There’s not only a ton of stuff, but it’s surprisingly clean here considering the sign is broken and there’s holes in the roof!
Well… clean to an extent. He immediately noticed that the walls of tools were completely disorganized. Almost as if a tornado blew into the store and miraculously mixed up every tool on the shelves.
…
…
Sunny refused to let this stand.

He immediately blitzed towards the nearest shelf and began taking things that di–
“What are you doing?”
“Huh?” Turning around, Sunny saw a girl with light brown hair wrapped up in a ponytail.
“I don’t know you.” The girl said simply.
“I-I’m Sunny, I moved in yesterday.”
“... Oh you’re the new neighbor.” Sunny nodded in response, “Oh, well anyway what are you doing?”
“Fixing the shelves, they’re a mess and I don’t like it.” Looking at the other shelves, the girl saw his point, “But before I was helping these two big kids with their love problems. Mom told me that girls liked gifts and I should give them some if they’re angry.”
…
…
“So you’re helping people you don’t even know with their… blegh, love problems?”
“You remind me of Kim.” Sunny commented, “But that is more important right now.” So with that, he put the power drill back onto the shelf where it once was, “I’ll do this later.”
As Sunny began walking towards the worker behind the counter, the girl seemed… lost in thought.
‘What’s so great about love anyway? It’s gross and boys are dumb.’
‘Hahaha!’
‘What’s so funny Mom?’
‘Oh nothing dear, just thinking about how nice it would be to be young again.’
‘Huh?’
‘But don’t worry dear, you’ll see how great love is one day…’
‘How great love is… huh?’ She looked back up to Sunny, who was holding a bouquet of red roses.
“Thanks Mister, how much is it?”
“It’s no problem. And don’t worry about it.”
“Huh?”
“Yeah I saw how you were going to organize those shelves. Our new worker is such a slacker, he just threw the tools onto the shelves with little to no care. Isn’t that the worst?”
“Oh yeah, terrible.”
“So, if you come back and fix it, I’ll cover the flowers, and give you some money.” ‘Money that I’m totally docking out of his paycheck…' “Sounds good?” Sunny responded with an excited nod, “Good, I’ll see you in a bit then–”
“Hey.”
“Huh? Oh it’s you again.”
“Can I come with you?”
“Huh? Why?”
"Nothing just… no reason.”
“Hmm… okay.”
“Wait hu–” Without warning, Sunny grabbed the girl's hand and began walking towards the door, “W-Wait a second, why are you holding my hand?!”
“A friend of mine does it, and my name is Sunny.”
“But that’s…” She was about to argue, but she just gave up and accepted that his small hands (that she 100% did not think were nice and soft) were stuck to hers, “Fine… my name is Sarah.”
“Welcome to the team Sarah.”
And with that…
*Buh dududududududu* *Babababa dadadadaaa*
Sarah joined Sunny’s Party!
“We got the flowers, Daphne and Kim should be done by now so we will meet with them to go to our last stop.”
“Alright… lead the way.”
…
As luck would have it, both groups exited their respective stores at the same time. “Did you guys get the stuff?”
“Yeah we–” Daphne then noticed that Sunny has a new friend following him, “Oh hello there.”
“Hey.”
“She’s a part of the group now.” Sunny declared, “This is Sarah. Sarah, this is Daphne and Kim.”
“Hi.” Sarah greeted.
“Hello there.” Followed by Daphne.
“*Gulp* *Gulp* Hey.” Which left Kim, after taking a swig of her soda to round out the dullest meet and greet in history. “Oh that reminds me, here’s your change.” Kim handed Sunny the remaining 15 dollars.
“Sarah and I got the roses, all that’s left is to get something fun from Hobbeez.” With the conga line of friends behind him, Sunny returned to the novelty store.
“Welcome– Oh hey new kid.” And the shopkeeper was there to greet him, “Ooh I see you have a posse.”
“Hey Mr. Shopkeep, there’s a girl and a boy fighting outside on the park bench. We need something fun to help them.”
“A boy and a girl hmm?” ‘It’s probably Sean and Karen.’ “Hmm… well if they’re outside on the bench then a board game will probably be the answer.” Pedro squatted down and looked through his collection of board games below the counter, “Hmm… aha! This one should be good.” He pulled it out and set it on the counter.
“Settler of… ca… cayton?” Sunny tried, he tried and it’s all that matters.
“Settlers of Catan.” But luckily Mr. Shopkeeper was there to correct him.
“Ooh… is it fun?”
“It’s a bit hard to learn, but yeah it’s very fun. And I’m sure those two will love it.”
“How can you be so sure?” Sarah asked.
“Because I know all.” He joked before ringing them up, “So that’ll set you back 20 bucks.”
Sunny winced, he’s down to his last 25 dollars… but it’d be worth it. So he paid for the board game and shuffled it under his arm, “Thank you Mr. Shopkeep.” He said before leading his team out of the store.
“You’re welcome, have a good day!”

Pedro couldn’t help but smile, “Well he’s going to be Mr. Popular when he grows up ain’t he?”

The items have been acquired… it’s time to make the drop off.
With the stealth of 50 billion ninjas, the four of them sneakily walked up towards the table whilst the two were… well it wasn’t exactly bickering anymore. It was more so the girl, Karen, shunning poor Sean who was trying his best to cheer her up. But at least they were distracted enough for them to drop off the game, two bottles of cold cola, two pints of vanilla ice cream, and the portable umbrella… Now all that’s left is to give Sean the flowers. The task was left to Sunny…

“Hu–” Sean immediately silenced up when Sunny held a finger up to his mouth, and with a smooth swiftness handed Sean the flowers. Sunny then pointed to Karen, trying to relay the message of ‘Hey dude, apologize to your girlfriend’. A rough translation, but the message got through to Sean as he nodded with renewed confidence.
“Hey Karen?”
“Ugh wha–”
*Rustle*
“I’m sorry I didn’t plan this date well… but I hope these will make it up to you…”
…
…
“Mmph!” The girl muffled a dramatic groan, “Why are you so lovable dang it, you’re going to make me cry!”
“Huh?!”
“Roses? An umbrella? Ice cream?! Settlers of Catan?!?!” The plan was working!
*Fwip*
“Dang it, I love you so much!”
“I…” Confused, but relieved all at the same time, Sean hugged her back, “I love you too.” Comfortable in the embrace, Karen slowly opened her eyes.
*Tap* *Tap* *Tap*
To notice Sunny and the gang running away.
…
…
Well she decided to file that information away in her mind for now, she had a date to enjoy. “Now then…”

“Ready to lose?” Karen asked, holding the portable umbrella above them for shade.
Sean smiled at the declaration of war. “Oh it’s on…”

…
Well. Sarah had to admit, seeing the two of them happy and hugging was a nice feeling… however.
“Why are we helping you do this again?” Sarah asked, carefully placing the wrenches on their designated shelf.
“Because I’m in debt.” Sunny flatly said, finishing up the power drill shelf.
“At least this one is easy.” Kim said, placing the final hammer onto her shelf.
“Mmph!” Which left Daphne with the shovel shelf, “Speak for yourself…”
“But we’re done.” Sunny said, which earned them a clap from the manager.
“Well done you four, here’s your payment.” He placed a 10 dollar bill on the counter, which the team agreed should go to Sunny since he footed the bill for the entire Romance Operation… and Kim’s soda. “And you know what, pick something you want from the store. You’ve all earned it.”
While the girls saw zero value in getting a free item from a tool shop, Sunny wasn’t going to let the opportunity for free stuff go to waste… but what. What should Sunny get from this store?
…
…
And it was at the moment… he saw it. Lost amidst the herd of tall lamps, stood a pair of small lamps. Both short and stocky, one with a rectangular lamp shade and a soft teal base, while the other had a more traditional cone shade with a bright pink base. To anyone else it’s just some random lamps… but to Sunny? “Jeffrey.”
“W-What?” Sarah asked, as Sunny went to pick up Jeffrey the Lamp.
“His name is Jeffrey.”
“W-Wha–”
“Welcome to the Team, Jeffrey.” Daphne greeted.
“B-But–”
“He’s cool I guess.”
“But it’s–” Sarah’s brain needed a small factory reset, before just rolling with it. “Welcome Jeffrey.” At least seeing the burst of happiness in Sunny’s eyes was worth it.
“Alright, bring Jeffrey up here so I can put it into the machine.”
Sunny has obtained Jeffrey the Lamp
- A small lamp with an energy efficient bulb, this little friend will light up any room.
“Hmm… and since you did such a good job. Take this too.”
Sunny has obtained a lone Red Rose
- A pristine red rose. The thorns carefully clipped to ensure safe handling.
“Thank you sir–”
*DINGLING*
“Paints paints paints…” Hold on, a new challenger has approached. A girl around Daphne’s age barged into the store and blitzed towards the paint samples. “Hmm…” But after a few seconds of looking at all the options she groaned. “Ugh… I’m not sure what color to pick.” She was in a dilemma…so she looked at Sunny. “Excuse meeeeeeee…”
"Sunny.”
“Sunny! Can you help me pick out a color? My newborn baby brother is coming home in a few days, so it needs to be amazing!”
Before Sunny could give his answer (Spoilers, it’s going to be yes)--
*Dingling*
Another person entered the store, another girl this time with dark blue hair, “Daah… haah… Angelica. Why did you run so dang fast?!”
“Painting waits for no one, Katie. Dad said that if I brought in a paint sample he liked by the end of the day, we would paint the whole room that color.”
“I get that, but I’m not as fast as you!”
Angelica and Katie went at it for a little bit, arguing about the morality of not leaving your friends behind in the pursuit of their baby siblings. But Sunny didn’t care… or really understand anything they were saying. He had a job to do…
He had to become an interior designer…

Surprise Quest: Paint Job
START!!
“Sunny are you really?”
“It’ll only take a minute Sarah.”
“But how are you going to pick a color for a baby you don’t know?”
“Simple.” Sunny said with confidence.
“Oh yeah how?”
“Like… this.”
*Tap*
He closed his eyes and pointed to the first sample he touched. Which was Periwinkle. “Perfect.”
‘ He can’t be serious. ’ Sarah watched in exasperation as he handed Angelica the Periwinkle sample.
…
…
“Hmm… I see. Yes this is perfect!”
‘ WHAT?!?!?! ’
The entire room was silent, as Sunny was standing there with pride, “I’m a genius.”
“That was luck!”
“I’m a lucky genius.”
“Buh wha?!” Watching Sunny just move on from this whole interaction as if it never happened is going to give poor Sarah gray hairs at age 4.
“I’m going to take this to my parents. This will surely win them over! Come on Katie!!” Angelica yelled, taking off into a full sprint once again.
“Dang it Angelica! Just… give me… a minute.” Seems like Katie never fully recovered. “She’s… running me…”
*Twisk*
“Here you go.” Sunny said, handing the poor girl the lone Red Rose.
“H-Huh?”
“You’re working too hard. You deserve a reward.”
…
…
Sunny has gifted the Red Rose.
“T-Thank you so much.”
*DINGLING*
“Katie, hurry up!”
…
…
A small smile grew on Katie’s face, “Coming.”
The pair left, leaving Sarah even more confused than ever before. What started off as a boring chore from her mother to see if any lamps were on sale for some reason, ended with her being whisked away by some random boy and his friends to do random things, and for what? Helping people? People he doesn’t even know?
And what’s worse, is that she's enjoying herself? Things that were once annoying to her are… fun? Fun and she didn’t know why. Was it doing it with others? Was it Sunny’s enjoyment in doing it? She had no idea why, and it’s driving her crazy.
…
…
She let out a sigh, not wanting to think about all these things that are making her head hurt, instead… “Now I want a lamp too…”
Surprise Quest: Paint Job
COMPLETE!!
…
With Jeffrey and Julia now a part of the crew, the sun is slowly starting to set as the town is now bathed in a bright orange glow. It’s now 4 o’ clock, meaning Sunny had one more hour left before he had to go back home.
“Hmm… what now?” A once good question made even better given the lateness and the fact that the budget is growing ever smaller. Sunny figured staying at 35 dollars was enough to satiate his Mom, and he never really got the chance to fully enjoy the park…
“Let’s go back to the park.”
With their destination settled, the gang went to the park. Sean and Karen aren’t there anymore, so the park is pretty empty… which really accentuated the fact that there’s an abundance of garbage all over the place! In fact now that Sunny’s thinking about it more, there’s trash all over this town! Do people have no concern for their livelihoods?!
… Well there is one person who is concerned, and it’s the elderly woman who is manning a Trash Stand.
“Sunny.” And Sarah, after remembering what they were doing for the past hour, knew where this was going. “I swear, if you’re going to have us pick up trash…”
“You don’t have to.” Sunny countered, before making his way towards the stand, “But I’m going to…”
Side Quest: Trash for Cash
START!!
“Oh, hello there child.” The elderly woman greeted, “Are you interested in our Trash for Cash program? Every piece of trash you bring here, I will give you one dollar. If you manage to bring me 25 pieces of trash just today, I’ll give you a special prize.” Sunny was doing this just because the existence of trash annoyed him… but now he has further incentive!
“Yes, I will.”
“Good. It’s great to see children taking initiative.” She commented, handing Sunny a large garbage bag and plastic gloves. “Are your friends going to help you?”
Sunny didn’t give an immediate answer, opted to instead look at them waiting for their answer.
…
…
While he did give them an out if they wanted to leave the garbage collecting to him. “Alright fine…” Sarah stepped forward and grabbed her own pair of gloves, “I’m here and I don’t want to go home yet.”
“Yeah same…” Kim said, getting her own pair, “Picking up trash is better than getting yelled at by mama.”
“And I’m here because I’m bored.” And with Daphne, the gang’s all here!
“Alright, time to Smash some Trash.”
…
…
“That. That was so lame…” Kim muttered, shooting a metaphorical dagger into Sunny’s self-esteem.
“And I thought my Dad was embarrassing…” Ouch, another dagger from Sarah.
“Hey, it wasn’t as bad as his first catch phrase.”
“There was something worse than that?”
“Oh yeah–”
“A-Anyway…” Sunny grumbled, “Let’s get to work.”
…
It’s shocking how far people are willing to go to litter.
While some pieces of trash are in easy to reach places, some were nigh impossible to get if it was just Sunny doing this alone.
Where there’s trash laying on the ground in the park, some are on the roof of Fix It, on the hood of a car, to even being stuck on the top of the Fountain outside. Like, how is that even possible, that had to be on purpose!
Ahem… anyway even after combing the entirety of the park and plaza… they only got 24 pieces of trash.
“Well… I appreciate you four children for cleaning up our town. Though it’s a shame that you didn’t get the full 25–”
“*Gulp* *Gulp* *BUUUURP*.” Meanwhile, Kim downed the rest of her Soda, “Huh? What happened?”
…
…
*Fwip*
“Wha– Hey!”
“That’s 25.” Sunny said, placing the empty soda bottle onto the table.
“... Good enough for me.” Oh. Alright then.
Through… unconventional and impolite means, the four of them managed to hit the 25 trash goal, and after splitting the 24 dollar pot evenly between the four of them they received their prize.
“Here it is… behold!”
Sunny has obtained the Bash Trash Keychain!
- A Keychain depicting a cartoonish old woman bashing a sentient garbage can with a hammer that resembles the number 25. Proof of your contributions to the cleanliness of Faraway!
“Thank you once again for your hard work.”
*Beep *Beep*
“And with that, it’s 5PM. You children should be getting home.”
“Well… it’s been fun guys.” Kim muttered, “But now I’m going to be killed by my mom for the Taffy…”
“And I have to help my mother clean up the shop.” Daphne commented.
“And… well I don’t really have anything to do besides go home.” Sarah said, “But it’s been… fun. Even if all we did was run around doing random stuff.”
“Yeah, thanks for helping me out.”
“No problem… but next time can we not touch garbage?”
“... Next time?”
A blush exploded on Sarah’s face, “I-I mean, if you want–”
“Yeah it’d be fun. I’ll have to bring my sister along, she’ll probably be upset I went on this big adventure without her.”
“I wanna do this again too, ooh we can have some of those famous brownies tomorrow.”
“Oh right! Man, I'm going to get a whole pan for myself.” Kim muttered, imagining the ooey gooey chocolatey goodness flooding in her mouth with every bite–
“Kim, you’re drooling.”
“Huh?” She quickly wiped her mouth with her sleeve, “A-Anyway I’m going home!” She yelled, speed walking away in embarrassment.
“Yeah, see you again Sunny.” Daphne said, walking towards Othermart.
…
…
“W-Well, see ya.” And there goes our Sarah, watch her as she goes… Which left Sunny.
“... I should be going home too.”
But first!

“I’m home.”
“Welcome back Sunny!” Halley yelled, giving a glance to Yamaha before meeting him at the front door, “How wa– Why do you have a lamp?”
“Sunny you’re back!” Mari yelled, wanting to hug her little brother, before she took a good look at him, “Why do you have a big apron?”
“And what’s that in the bag?” Yamaha asked.
…
…
“Long story.” Sunny said, before his stomach growled, “But I want food.”
Yamaha was about to comment, “Yeah, I’m hungry too.” But Halley spoke first.
“Me too.” Then Mari.
…
…
“Oh alright…” Yamaha relented, hungry as well. “I was thinking–”
“Oh wait, I almost forgot.” Sunny dug into his bag and pulled out the bag of Smooches he bought at Sweet Hearts. “Here you go Mari.”
“*Gasp*! Yay!”
“Ahem.” Halley coughed, getting Mari’s attention, “After. Dinner.”
“... Fine.” She grumbled, handing the bag to Halley–
*Rip*
Who has ripped it open and pulled out a few of them, “H-Hey!”
“What? Mom Tax™.”
It was at that moment that Mari learned the true cruelties of an unfair government.
…
Turns out the Suzuki Family wouldn’t get any answers until the next day. Turns out running around all day left Sunny pretty much spent, after eating dinner and taking a bath he jumped right into bed and passed out sleeping. No amount of poking and prodding from Mari got him to wake up.
But now that it’s the next day, Mari was going to get answers out of Sunny. Why did he come home with a huge apron, a lamp named Jeffrey, a random book, among other things.
Either way she wanted to know everything Sunny did on his adventure (and voice how she wants to come on the next adventure).
So after breakfast, watching saturday cartoons, doing some of her summer homework, eating some sandwiches for lunch, watching more cartoons, and then realizing that she was losing focus on her true objective, Mari basically dragged Sunny out of their room and towards the living room couches. “So what did you do yesterday?” and went straight to the point.
“Oh right… hmm… nothing mu–”
*Dingdong*
“I’ll get it.” Her answers were stolen by that meddling doorbell.
*Click* *Creeeeak*
“Yup, figured it’d be you.” Brandi said, leaning against the door frame, “My little sister was hunched over that book all day yesterday. Who else was in that store besides you?”
Well, he should have figured a confrontation would happen eventually. “And?”
“Well… it’s kinda rude to give a girl something and not even tell her your name.”
…
…
The realization hit him like a meteor, “Oh I’m sorry–”
“Pfft!” And Brandi started laughing, “You’re a weird kid. But Bebe likes you, and… well you’re not the worst boy she’s ever met. Let me tell you there was this one kid, hair coated in boog–”
“Sis please!” Oh hey Bebe’s here, “Let’s not talk about him ever again.”
“... Fine.” She didn’t want to remember him anyway, “But still, she went through all the effort to bake you some cookies as a welcoming gift.”
“That’s not true! You were just as excited to help me too.”
“I-Irrelevant.” Brandi said, “A-Anyway tell her your name and accept the cookies so I can get back to work. Teachers decided it was a good thing to assign Summer Homework.”
Oh right, his name, “My name is Sunny.”
*Fwip*
“And I’m Mari!” Mari greeted, throwing her arm over his shoulder, “I’m his older sister, and official Poison Inspector of Baked Goods.” Without warning she took a cookie out of Bebe’s plate and plopped it into her mouth.
“H-Hey!”
“Hmm… delicious, and yup no poison!”
“If you wanted a cookie you could have said so.”
Sunny has obtained a Plate of Chocolate Chip Cookies
- A plate of delicious cookies baked by Bebe and her sister. Best served with a nice cold glass of milk.
“Thanks Bebe.”
Her shocked expression turned into a warm smile, “Y-You’re welcome!”
“And with that, it’s time for us to leave.”
“B-But Brandi…”
“Mom wanted us to just deliver the cookies and say hi, and besides…”
“Hey Sunny!”
“We’re not the only ones with gifts.” Daphne stood in the front door with two saran wrapped loaves of bread in her hands as a boy about her age was also standing behind her. Brandi took this chance to slip away back home.
“You forgot to get your loaf of Brioche from yesterday.” Sunny mentally smacked his forehead in shame, “So Mother and Father sent it over along with this as a housewarming gift, a loaf of Challah.”
“She says Mother and Father sent it, but she made that loaf herself.” The boy said, leaning in to get a good look at Sunny’s face, “So this is the boy you kept talking about.”
“Bowen!”
“... I like him. Seems nice.” Bowen commented, “Mother liked him a lot too. A bit too much considering she also kept talking about her days as a teenager, meeting her first boyfr–”
“A-Anyway Sunny here’s the loaves, we gotta go bye!” Dumping the loaves into the plate that held Bebe’s cookies. She then grabbed Bowen’s sleeve and dragged him far away from the house. Bowen just kept a deadpan expression as he was being jostled.
…
…
“B-Bye?” ‘ Weird… ’ Sunny thought, not really understanding… anything that just transpired. But at least he’s got bread.
Sunny has obtained a loaf of Brioche Bread
- A loaf of bread you spent a vast majority of your day making. It’s airy texture and rich buttery taste makes it hard to beat!
Sunny has also obtained a loaf of Challah
- A gift from Daphn– I mean Mr. and Mrs. Baker. A nice soft bread with a funky looking shape.
“Who was that Sunny?” Mari asked, as Sunny put the plate of cookies and the loaves of bread on the coffee table.
“Daphne is a friend, don’t know Bowen, but he seemed nice.”
“Oh.” Mari was a little disappointed that Sunny met the neighbors without her, but she’ll meet them eventually. “Anyway what type of brea–”
*Knock* *Knock* *Knock*
“Hello?” A voice came from the doorway.
“I’ll tell you later, visitors.” Sunny looked at the doorway to see– “Oh Ms. Hart.” Yeah, her.
“Sunny, whose– Oh hello there.” Halley stepped into the living room, holding Sunny’s freshly washing apron in her arms.
“Hello, I’m Ms. Hart worker and soon to be owner of Sweet Hearts Candy Shop.” Mss. Hart greeted, ruffling Candice’s hair, “And this bundle of teenage joy is my daughter. Candice Hart.”
“H-Hello…” She muttered, both from shyness and annoyance of getting her hair ruffled.
“Pleasure to meet you. You already know my favorite and only son, so this is my favorite and only daughter Mari.”
“Hi!”
“Mari huh? Well let’s see…” The woman bent down to look Mari directly in her eyes… much to her discomfort.
“U-Uh…”
“Hmm… well you have quite the sweet tooth.”
“Ha! Ain’t that the truth.”
“Mom…”
“But unlike your brother you like hard candies, you like how it takes a long time to melt so the flavor lasts. Bonus points if the hard candy is fruit flavored, but you hate mint with a passion.”
“... Y-Yeah?” Now she’s getting scared at how accurate her analysis is.
“But like your brother you love chocolate. Specifically dark chocolate. Even more specifically Smooches… which makes sense why he bought a bag yesterday.”
“... H-How did you do that?”
“Knowing what my customers like is how I stayed in business. Both for quick service and to spook new customers.” Ms. Hart said with a smile, “Your brother was scared out of his mind too when I did it to him.”
Mari looked at Sunny, who nodded shamefully, “I wasn’t expecting it.”
“But I didn’t come here to give a Psycho Analysis of your candy tastes, I’m here… with a gift. Candice?”
The moody teen held out a large rectangular tin, and with just one look inside Sunny knew what it was, “I-Is this really?”
“Yup, those famous brownies Daphne told you about yesterday.” Mrs. Hart confirmed, and call Sunny crazy… but he swears he could hear Angels singing once the pan was revealed, “I told Mom about you yesterday and she decided to make a pan all for you.”
“R-Really?!” Sunny was excited, there was heavy praise for these brownies and he could finally taste them.
“Yup, but don’t forget to share with your sister and your mother. Oh, and don’t eat them all at once.”
Sunny took the pan with a pout, “I wasn’t going to…”
“Ha! Just wait until you try one, it’ll be hard to resist eating the whole pan.”
“If that’s the case…”
*Clang*
“I’m hiding these somewhere these two thieves can’t get ‘em.”
“W-Wha?”
Sunny has been robbed of Hart’s Famous Brownies
- Delicious brownies that despite their addictive qualities are made of love. Aaand all the other ingredients to make brownies.
“I’ve been… I’ve been robbed.”
“Hmhmhm.” Ms. Hart stifled a giggle, “Well we shouldn’t witness this family skirmish. Come on Candice, we gotta get back to the shop before the brownie rush gets in.”
“Uuuugh, I hate the brownie rush.”
“Yeah well the brownie rush pays for your allowance. So if you don’t wanna be there then I’ll take all the profits for myself.”
“No way, let’s go.”
‘ Works every time… ’ With the promise of taking her precious allowance dangled in front of her eyes Candice all but ran to the shop, leaving her mother to casually stroll away from the Suzuki home.
“Well come on Mom! Cut the brownies, I wanna try them!”
“Be patient Mari.” Halley urged, hearing the sound of stomping sneakers approaching at blazing speed, “Because visiting time isn’t over yet.”
“SUNNY!!!” Like a freight train, Kel blitzed in front of the open door, “Hi Sunny! I have someone to show you–”
“Kelsey!!”
“Oop, I’m in trouble.” He muttered, completely turning around, “H-Hi Mom!”
“Kelsey, why did you rush?” The woman, Kel’s Mother, approached the front door. Sunny instantly took notice of the plated up cake in her hands. “We live right next door, you didn’t have to run.”
“W-Well, I was excited. And besides…” Kel brashly pointed to the young boy, “Henry was equally excited, because he wanted to see the pre–”
“Kelsey!”
“Nuh-uh. Until you call me Kel I won’t listen to you.”
“Where did that even come from–”
“Nice to see you again Kel.” Sunny greeted, much to the surprise of Henry and his Mother.
“Hahaha!” The father on the other hand, wasn’t surprised in the slightest. Unlike Sunny who noticed he has a small potted cactus in his hands. “Figured you were the reason why Kel wanted everyone to call him that. I also take it you were the reason why it took so long to get food yesterday.”
“Dad! I already told you we were in and out, 15 minutes tops.”
“But I did play that arcade game.”
“A-ha! How long did you play?”
“For the whole 15 minutes.”
“Oh wow, must have been a huge quarter sink–”
“I beat the high score.”
…
…
“I’m sorry, say that again? I thought I heard you say you beat the ‘Unbeatable High Score’.”
“On Galomega? Yeah I beat it.”
“The… the high score? H-How old are you, son?”
“I’m four.”
Words that tear into the Father’s heart, he tried getting that High Score to show his son how cool he was… but only got 2nd place on the Leaderboards. Well, I guess 3rd place is more accurate now.
“Yeah you should have seen it Dad! He has this… this look in his eyes, and his hands were like… woosh woosh woosh!” Kel flailed his arms around, “And the ship was like, pew pew pew. And the bad ships were like, boom boom boom!”
“I… I see.” Kel’s Dad gave Sunny the potted cactus before turning around in shame, “Curses… I was too slow.”
Sunny has obtained a Small Potted Cactus
- While small in size it’s round bulbous shape and sharp quills can mess up anyone who dares make fun of it.
‘ ... Your name is Reginald. ’ A new member of the family has arrived… Reginald the Cactus.
“And Sunny’s too good at games. That’s my Son right there.” Halley said with pride, “My name’s Halley Suzuki.”
“Henrietta Rodriguez, and that pouty sack is James Rodriguez.” Henrietta said, holding out the plate of cake, “Baked this last night for your family. I was planning on making a chocolate cake, but my little Kelsey insisted on a Confetti cake.”
Sunny has obtained a Confetti Cake
- A vanilla cake with rainbow sprinkles infused into the batter. A genius technique that, while doing nothing for the overall flavor, makes it 10 times more fun to eat!
Kel pouted at being called little, but they’ll see, they’ll all see! He’ll grow up big and strong one day. “Funny, that’s one of Sunny’s favorites.”
“Is that so?”
“Yup, he loves seeing the cake being decorated with little rainbow dots.” Sunny blushed, he didn’t ask to be exposed like this. “In fact, why don’t you and your boys stay over for dinner? With all the deserts we’ve been getting from the neighbors there isn’t a possibility we can eat them all ourselves.”
Henrietta can just tell where this conversation is going to go. Kel’s puppy dog eyes, the begging, the threats to never speak to her again that will last about 5 hours, “Fine.”
“Really?!”
“But I want you to be on your best behavior. Don’t cause them grief ya hear?”
“Yes Mom…”
“Alright, now what do you plan to have for dinner?”
“Hmm… well I heard there was a pizza place near here–”
“Gino’s.”
“That’s the one, figured we’d splurge a little. Especially considering the food we’ve eaten since we’ve got here was mediocre chinese food and somehow an even worse stir fry.”
“Sounds like a wonderful idea.” Mr. Rodriguez muttered, “In fact we’ll help pay.”
“You want to beat the High Score don’t you?”
“I’ll get it this time, I know it.” He said, before taking a head start towards the Pizzaria.
“Dear, you're addicted.” She muttered, following after him.
“Hahaha, well they seem like a lively bunch.” Halley said, setting the pan of brownies next to the other baked goods, and giving her son a nice ruffling of his hair. “We’ll be back in about an hour or two, go and tell your friends about your Grand Tale, and don’t even think about having a brownie until we get back.”
Before Sunny could even respond with a ‘Okay Mom’ or an ‘I love you Mom’ or even a ‘Be sure to get some ranch cups’ Kel took Sunny’s hands. “Come on, I wanna hear about what you did yesterday!”
“And with that, I take my leave.” With a dramatic twirl, Halley has left the building.
…
…
“H-Hello there.” Kel’s brother, Henry Rodriguez, shyly spoke up, “My name is Henry.”
“Hi!” Mari meanwhile was super ecstatic to meet a new friend, “I’m Mari.”
Sunny was about to point out the very obvious blush on Henry’s face, “Hi, is this– Oh Sunny!” Until another person stood at the door.
“Cris?”
“Oh hey Kelsey. You know Sunny too?”
“Yeah I meant him yesterday morning. You know him too?”
“Oh yeah. I was having a fight with Mincy… honestly don’t remember what it was. But he bought us stuff and we got over it.” Cris explained, holding out a pie tin that housed a blueberry pie, “Here, my Mom made this for you.”
Sunny has obtained a Blueberry Pie
- A pie with a filling of… you guessed it, blueberries. The top of the pie is a pretty criss-cross lattice design, almost making up for the hundred of blueberries that have been roasted in the hot oven.
“Thanks Cri–”
“A-ha! So this is the boy?” A blonde man with a blonde handle-bar mustache showed up, pointing an accusatory finger to Sunny, “This is the boy making the moves on my lil’ girl?”
…
…
“Huh?” Welp Sunny’s confused again, not sure why this man is talking to him about ‘making the moves’ on his ‘lil’ girl’, which he assumed was Cris.
*Smack*
“Dear, stop with that. You’re embarrassing Cris.” A light brown haired woman said, smacking her husband on the back of the head, “Sorry about that dear.”
“No… problem?”
“Susie, we’re supposed to be intimidating, how else are we gonna protect our lil’ Cris?”
“Gary, she’s four. She’ll be fine.” Susie muttered, before giving Sunny a warm smile, “But it’s nice to meet you finally. Cris wouldn’t stop talking about how you helped her make up with Mincy.”
“Yeah! I still have the Dolphin, I named her Shelly.” She said, casting a disappointed glance at her Dad, “Meanwhile he wanted to name her Miami.”
“Wha? Miami is a great name!”
“No it’s not.” Cris muttered.
“I agree, it’s terrible.” Ooh Susie with the assist!
“I can’t believe this… I’m being attacked by my own family.”
“Uh-huh, so anyway Sunny wanna hang out? I’m bored.”
“Now wait a mi–”
“Perfect, why don’t you stay here with your friend.” Susie said, grabbing the back of Gary’s shirt, “While we do some cleaning around the house.”
“Cleaning? The house is spotless!”
“If it was spotless how come you keep losing your remote?”
“Ghh!”
“You have fun now!” And with that… the parents are gone.
“Welcome to the party Cris!”
“Yeah! I just wish Mi–”
“Oh, hello there Mr. and Mrs. Waters.” Another voice entered the fray, as a head of familiar messy black hair stood at the doorway, “Oh Cris, Kel, Sunny. Hi.”
“Come on Sis, you can be more excited–”
“Mincy!!” Cris leapt over to huggle (hug and snuggle, word invented and trademarked by one Cristal Waters, do not steal) her dear friend Mincy. Who decided to just take her friends' open affection.
“Hi Cris.”
“See, Cris knows how to be excited.” The older boy said, before looking at Sunny, “So you must be the new kid my Lil’ Mincemeat Pie kept talking about.”
Mincy’s face erupted into a hot red, causing her to look away from the boy with a pouty huff, “W-Why do you keep calling me that?!”
“Because it embarrasses you. And that’s the older sibling’s job.”
“Then get a new job!”
“But that would make me not your big brother anymore. You don’t want that do you?”
…
…
“You hurt me.”
“Good.”
“My little sister is so mean. Woe is me…” He muttered, dramatically swaying to the side, “I help her meet her friends and how does she repay me? Insulting me. Saying I shouldn’t be her big brother anymore… hmph.”
He then started fake crying, as Mincy started to lightly shake, “I guess I should… run away. Pack up my belongings, become a hobo, eat garbage, and wonder how my li– no former little sister is doing without me–”
*Fwip*
“Don’t… don’t leave.” Mincy muttered, enveloping the boy in a hug.
His fake crying evolved into real crying as he hugged Mincy even tighter, “I… I’ll never leave you.”
“Good...”
Sunny, having watched their interaction, hoped he and Mari would never end up like that. He doesn’t think his heart could take it.
“A-Anyway.” Wiping his tears away the boy stood up straight, “The name’s James, nice to meet the new family.”
“Hi.” Sunny simply greeted.
“Anyway, Mom and Dad just wanted us to meet the new family. Let’s go Min–”
“Wait.” Mincy interrupted, digging into her pocket to pull out a folded piece of paper, “Here, for you.”
Sunny has obtained a Drawing of Sunny
- Thanks to the power of 100 colored pencils, Mincy managed to draw a nice picture of Sunny. Complete with a sky, some grass, a few trees, the outfit Sunny wore yesterday, she even drew the two tufts of hair on the top of his head! What attention to detail!
“Thank you Mincy, it’s nice.”
“R-Really? T-Thank you.”
“Hey, where’s my drawing?” Kel asked.
“Yeah I want one too!” Cris joined in.
And it was at that moment Mincy learned the dangers of being an artist, “I-I’ll do them when I get home.”
“Actually, why don’t you stay here with your friends?”
“But my–”
“I’ll go back home to get your colored pencils.” James said, waving off her worry, “Just stay here with your cool new friend while your big bro slaves away at home doing his summer homework.”
“Okay, thanks.”
“Not even a smidgen of worry…” James muttered, before gently pushing Mincy inside, “Y’all keep her safe, her favorite drink is an ice cold Sprite, and no celery because she hates–”
“Okay James, they get it bye.” He let out a chuckle, made an even bigger mess of Mincy’s already messy hair, and went on his merry way. Causing the party to grow by one person.
“... So is that all of them?”
Before Sunny could answer Mari’s question–
*BANG* *BANG* *BANG*
“Hey is Sunny home?!” A loud voice blared through the room.
“Kimberly Johnson, want to try that again?”
“Ghk! S-Sorry Mama.” Kim muttered before gingerly knocking on the door, “Is Sunny home?”
“Hi, Sunny is me.”
“Kim? What are you doing here?” Kel asked, as Kim made a disgusted face.
“Oh great, Smelly Kelsey is here–”
“And be nice.” A middle aged woman with red glasses chastised Kim. Sunny figured this woman is Kim’s Mother.
“Aah you must be the one who paid for my little rascal’s candy. I apologize for them, once my husband introduced them to candy… especially taffy, they couldn’t get enough.”
“Just like Mari with Jolly Rogers™…”
“Hey!”
“And as much as I wanted to pay you back for the candy, Kim said you wouldn’t accept it. So in exchange…” She held out a miniature tree, one that was housed in a rectangular pot, “I’ll give you one of my Bonsai Trees.”
To say Sunny was enthralled by the tiny tree would be an understatement. Not only was seeing a tiny tree made him feel like a giant, but paired with Reginald the Tiny Cactus he has a tiny plant family! “Thank you.”
“You’re quite welcome, and remember. If you take care of it properly it can live for over 100 years.”
Oooh, an immortal tiny tree. Acknowledging the immense responsibility that’s about to be placed in his hands, with a determined heart Sunny took the Bonsai Tree.
Sunny has obtained a Bonsai Tree
- A small tree that has the potential to live for many many years! However since they’re confined in a small pot they need constant care if they have any hope to reach that stage…
‘ Hmm… Brittany. ’ And with her new name… Sunny swore to take care of this tree for as long as he lived.
“Anyway.” Mrs. Johnson said with a clap, “The two of us are going to leave… a certain someone is still grounded for a week after her little crime spree.”
“Mmph! *Grumble* *Grumble*...”
“Oh don’t you grumble grumble me. Do your chores well enough and I might consider getting some of those brownies you love so much.”
“Really?!” Well that seemed to do the trick, as Kim firmly grabbed her mother’s wrist, “Come on Mama! I want to eat them!”
‘ Of all the things to pass onto my little Kimberly, it’s your sweet tooth. ’ Mrs. Johnson thought as she let herself be dragged by her sugar crazed daughter, “Alright, just slow down. I’m not as young as I used to be…”
And with that, another family has left the Suzuki household–
“H-Hello Sunny.” Only for another to immediately show up.
“Oh Charlie, hey!” Kel greeted, causing the young girl to shyly wave.
“Howdy there!” And two more girls, older girls at that, filed in behind her, “So, you’re the famous Sunny who beat my know it all Lil’ Bro in a battle of wits?”
…
…
“Huh?”
“Clare’s asking if you beat Ken yesterday.”
“... Oh, you’re Charlie’s Sisters.” Sunny figured out the mystery, “So… you’re Miracles?”
“Correct.”
“Aaaand judging by how you know our names, that must mean you beat Ken. So tell me, what did his face look like?”
“He looked upset.” Sunny recalled, “His eyes were wide, his mouth was wide open… his face was red.”
“Excellent, that must have been a large blow to his ego getting beat by a 4 year old.”
…
…
Sunny looked to Miracles for context, “Clare and Ken are twins. They both keep trying to beat each other at… well whatever really.” Miracles explained, “But Ken is in a Math Class that’s ahead of hers and never let her hear the end of it. Which is why Clare is taking a Summer Class and why she wants Ken to lose in some fashion.”
“And he did! Uhh!” She did a personal fist pump, “He lost to a kid, I’m never letting him hear the end of it–”
“But Ken beat you, so does that mean you’re below a kid?”
Clare was stunned by Miracles’ twisted (and yet so correct) logic, “W-Wha?!” And dang it she’s not going to let that stand, “You, fight me in a battle of wi–”
“You can challenge him on your own time, we’ve already taken so much of their time as is.”
Defeated, deflated, dejected, and every other emotion that starts with ‘De’, Clare was feeling them at this moment. “Fine…”
“Anyway Charlie, is there anything you wanna say to your new friend before we drag this over competitive lump with us?”
“U-Umm…” Charlie stuttered, before handing Sunny a small item wrapped roughly in gift paper, “Here, for you.”
“Oh, uhh…” Sunny quickly dropped off the Bonsai Tree onto the coffee table holding the other gifts, before rushing back to take Charlie’s wrapped gift. “Thank you.” He gently unwrapped the gift.
Sunny has obtained a Flower Hair Clip
- A hair clamp of an Orange Tulip. Double sided and has a nice velvet feel, this accessory is super stylish for anyone and everyone.
With a smile Sunny grabbed a clump of hair and put the clip on, not caring that it just hung there very loosely.
“Oh Sunny…” Mari on the other hand cannot let this Crime Against Hairmanity stand, gently removing the clip and grabbing as much hair as she can comfortably grab… which isn’t much, “If you’re planning to wear this, you’re going to need to grow out your hair.”
“... Long hair?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Long like yours?”
“If you want, yes. Long like mine.”
Sunny could see it now. His long black locks flowing with the wind, doing dramatic poses with his hair, seeing all the ways he can mess with his hair… so many possibilities.
“Aaaand, there.” It wasn’t the best place, but Mari managed to securely attach the clamp on the side of his head… and it took all of Mari’s 7 year old willpower to not loudly ‘Squeeeee’ at the sight of her little brother with the hair clamp.
“Blegh…” Kel meanwhile verbally aired out his distaste of the accessory, “Girl stuff!”
“Kel…” Henry was quick to chastise him
…
…
Sunny however, just dramatically flipped his head back, “I’m beautiful.”
Yas King, slay– I mean, ahem. Such confidence is a nice sight, especially at a young age.
“Pfft.” And Miracles was greatly amused, “Well it seems little Charlie’s gift is appreciated, so that means it’s time to go.”
“B-But…”
“That means you too.” She grabbed Clare’s arm and began dragging her away.
“B-Bye.” And with Charlie’s nervous goodbye, the trio of sisters went on their merry way.
“So Sunny, you think that’s the last one?” Kel asked.
“No, not at all.”
“Huh–”
*stomp* *Stomp* *STOMP*
“Oi Sunny!”
“Hi Angelica.”
“Haah… haah… Angelica… whyyyyyy.”
“Hi Katie.”
“H… Hey Sunny…”
“Dad loved the color you picked, so as a reward I wanted to give you this!”
Sunny got a Baby Photo dumped into his hands
- A photo of a sleeping baby boy. Angel was written on the bottom.
“Congratulations, you’re now his honorary big brother.”
‘ Honorary Big Brother? ’ Sunny looked at the picture one more time… and decided then and there that he was going to love and protect him with all of his being.
“Anyway that’s all I came to do! Gotta go back to paint the rest of the room, bye!”
*NYOOOOM*
Aaand there she goes, leaving Katie behind once again. “Dang it Angelica…” With a heavy sigh she snapped back up straight, “Gotta go back to her, here. This is for you.”
Sunny has obtained a Tomato Keychain
- A keychain of a small tomato. It’s cute smiling face almost makes you forget how bottom tier of a vegetable it is.
“Thanks for the rose yesterday, it’s in a vase.” Katie took a deep… sorrowful breath, “And now I gotta go back to help Angelica… God help me.” And with that, she sprinted off.
“Okay, now that must be it right?” Cris asked.
“Nope.”
“Really–”
“Hey.” Like a sneaky ninja, Sarah stood in the doorway, “So… Mom and Dad went to get some lunch and I’m supposed to stay home to watch the house. So I’m going to make this quick.” She dug into her pocket, “Here, take this.”
Sunny has obtained an Eye Heart Pizza pin.
- A metal pin with an eyeball and a heart all on top of a pizza. A tacky tribute to the great union of cheese, tomatoes in its best form… a sauce, bread, and optional meat and vegetables.
“I’ve been thinking about yesterday, I didn’t expect helping people and picking up garbage to be fun… but you somehow made it fun. So… thanks for yesterday.”
“Huh?” Sunny was half paying attention as he struggled to put the pin on his shirt, “Oh you’re welcome.” Sarah let out a sigh, “But if you want to do it again we can.”
…
…
“Yeah, we should.” Sarah said, “A-Anyway I gotta get home so my parents don’t get mad. Bye.”
“Oh, well bye?” That was an abrupt exit.
“What’s taking James so long– I mean anyone else Sunny?” Mincy asked, as Sunny pondered on that question a little bit.
“Hmm… at least two more people.”
*Knock* *Knock* *Knock*
“Hello there!” There’s the lovey dovey pair of Sean and Karen… Well, Karen was pretty happy while Sean was wearing an embarrassed smile.
“Oh hello.” Kel greeted, “I don’t think I know you two.”
“Yeah we don’t live here, but we live pretty close by. Now I do believe someone owes someone some thanks.” Karen said, gently patting Sean’s head. “Isn’t that right Sean?”
Sunny instantly knew where this was going, “I’ve never seen that man before in my life.” And immediately started lying.
“Oh is that so? So you’re not the little boy with black straight hair with two little tufts of hair sticking up?”
“...Nope. That’s my uhh… that’s my twin brother. Cloudy.” Phenomenal lying there Sunny. 10/10.
“Cloudy ehh? Well it’s a common mistake then.” Karen said, nodding in understanding, “Guess that means this Strawberry Shortcake has to go to him then.”
“Strawberry Shortcake?” Sunny’s resolve was breaking at the seams.
“Yup, it’s a good one too. Buttercream frosting, fresh strawberries sandwiched between nice soft cakes. Gotta say I put a lot of work into it…”
Hold the line… hold the line… hold the– Dah screw it. “Hi, I’m Sunny. I helped Sean yesterday.”
“Oh honey I know.” Karen said with a soft smile, “You and your friends weren’t exactly sneaky.”
“Hey, I was a sneaky ninja.”
Karen bit back a giggle, “Anyway young ninja, you helped my man over here fix an awful date.”
“Hey it wasn’t… okay it was a bad date."
“It’s okay Sean, I’ve planned as many bad dates as you have. So, here you go Sunny, oh and don’t forget to give some to your twin brother Cloudy.”
“Are you making fun of me?”
“Oh 100% I am.”
Sunny couldn’t believe this blatant disrespect, his genius disguise was being insulted. With an embarrassed pout Sunny took the delicious pastry.
Sunny has obtained a Strawberry Shortcake
- A delicious cake full of frosting and fresh strawberries. It’s a test of strength of will and resolve to not eat some of the strawberries on top.
“Welp, it’s time to take our leave–”
“We’re back with the Pi– Oh, hello.”
“And it seems we’re right on time too.” Karen said, as Halley and the Rodriguez’s returned from their pizza run, “We were just thanking your Son for saving our day yesterday… and looking at the table it seems we’re not the only ones.”
“Wait really?” Halley peered inside to see all of the times that were delivered, “Oh wow, we’re uhh… we’re going to need to make room in the kitchen.”
“Well either way, it seems you all have a pizza party to have. Sean and I have Summer Homework to procrastinate on.” Karen hooked her arm around Sean’s and waved at Sunny, “Thanks Mr. Ninja.”
After the pair left, Halley uncomfortably shuffled the pizzas in her arms.
“Alright, if you’re all done staring can you help?”
…
With the deserts shelved away for after dinner, everyone was eating their pizzas and joking around.
James eventually came back around with paper and colored pencils, causing Mincy to go on an Artist Frenzy.
Henry kept shifting glances at Mari who was too engrossed in her pizza to notice… (Sunny on the other hand did notice).
Kel and Cris were having a mini competition to see who can put the most pepperonis on one slice of pizza.
Halley was conversing with Mr. and Mrs. Rodriguez about stuff about Faraway she needed to know. Knowledge like when does produce go on sale at Othermart, what happens at Ginos after dark, adult stuff.
As for Sunny, well he was just eating pizza while telling Mari the full details of his adventure yesterday. Feeling satisfied with himself with all he's done. He has desert for days, learned how to make bread, has an undefeated Pet Rock record, is an honorary big brother, and has a family of small plants. Among other things!
Nothing can interrupt this feeling–
“Wait a minute. Sunny.”
“Huh?”
“All the friends you’ve made… most of them are girls!”
…
…
“Oh yeah. I didn’t notice.” Sunny muttered, and she was right. Outside of Kel all of the people he interacted with on a meaningful scale were girls.
“Oh reeeeeeeeaaaaalllllyyyy…?” Halley asked, setting her drink down, “Well, what do you have to say about that, Sunny?”
Sunny contemplated his response, for saying the wrong thing can and will end in disaster. But then Sunny remembered the rules his mother taught him. “Uhh… girls are pretty?”
…
…
…
…
Okay that was four ellipsis, something’s wron–
“Pfft! Hahaha!!” Halley started to laugh extremely loudly, “That’s my son! I taught him everything he knows!”
Now Sunny’s not an expert… but if his mother was laughing that loud then he was sure he messed up somewhere.
…
…
Oh well, time to grab seconds.
