Work Text:
Lance was not really a coffee guy. He wasn’t really a tea guy either. The only time he would ever drink tea was when he was sick but he’s pretty sure that everyone does that regardless if they like it or not. So when his friend told him to go on a blind date with someone at this cafe they liked, he was skeptical at first. Sure, he didn’t have to order coffee or tea but he felt like he should when you go on a coffee date. Luckily this cafe seemed to have many options to choose from, maybe an option that has enough diabetes in it to make him forget he was drinking coffee. Pidge told him to try something called a “Chai tea,” seems reasonable enough to order.
He had arrived at the Cafe around four pm. He thought it was weird to have a coffee date in the afternoon but apparently that’s the only time this date was available so he wasn’t gonna hound them for it. He wasn’t really a busy guy at four pm anyways so why make a big deal out of it? He walked through the door and hummed as he heard the door jingle loudly. The line wasn’t very long but he wanted to check the menu first to see if the drink Pidge recommended was indeed on the Menu. It was! So he got in line. He could hear the receipt being printed and the customer before him took it and walked towards the order receiving end of the counter. He walked up to the cashier and made eye contact with what he believed in that moment to be the most beautiful person he had ever seen. They had very thick eyebrows full of emotion, and eyes that were dark and hypnotizing. Their mouth, while curved into a frown, was mysterious. Why were they angry? And while their hair looks like it needs to be groomed, Lance wouldn’t dare trim a single hair of their head. Their hair was definitely cut by themself, but it fits them so well. They were so hot.
“Um sir, can I help you?” They asked him, it seemed he had been starring at them for a full minute without saying anything,
Lance cleared his throat before he said, “actually I was wondering if I could help you? The name’s Lance,” he said in a deep voice and topped it off with a wink, “You seem very lonely here,” he took a glance at his name tag, “Keith,” Lance said all smug like. Wait. “Keith is your name?” Lance said sort of in disbelief.
“Um yeah. What about it?” Keith looked at him strangely, and Lance didn’t mean to say that out loud, how was he going to turn this around.
“Well I don’t know, I guess I was expecting something more extravagant, you don’t really look like a Keith,” Lance said to Keith without a care. Keith was not in the mood to deal with this.
“Well, aren’t you a charmer?” He said dryly, “what can I get you,” he pauses, “Lance?” Keith asks again, trying to change the subject.
“Oh,” his name on Keith’s tongue had his heart flutter for some reason. “I’ll have a chai tea.” Lance said after a pause.
Keith waited for him to continue but when Lance didn’t he asked, “what size?”
“I’ll have a medium,” Lance said, then remembered, “could I have it with oat milk?” Lance asked innocently.
“Of course,” Keith tried to say in his customer service voice but did not have the energy to bring it to his eyes.”is there anything else I can get you sir?”
“How bout your number?” Lance smiled at him charmingly, well not in Keith’s opinion,
“In your dreams loverboy,” Keith sighed, luckily his shift was over soon. He rang Lance up and Lance paid, walking over to the other side of the counter to wait for his drink.
When one of the workers called his order, he walked up and looked at the drink. They made it will whole milk instead! Why?
“I thought I said I wanted oat milk,” Lance walked up to the cashier again to complain to Keith about the order.
“Oh I’m sorry we’re fresh out,” but Keith was not sorry in the slightest, he messed up the order on purpose. To be honest, Lance wasn’t really that mad at Keith, but it was the principle of the thing. He should have asked Lance to change the order.
“You should have let me know you were out before I finished ordering!” Lance said slightly louder than his normal voice but it was far from a shout.
“Well, maybe I would have had time to tell you if you stopped drooling over me every second you got here.” Keith replied snarkily. Well Lance certainly wasn’t drooling now.
“You,” Lance said accusingly then paused, “you have terrible customer service skills!”
“And you have terrible flirting skills. I’ve never barfed in my mouth that many times while talking to someone before.” Keith went on.
“Whatever, you’re not worth my time.” Lance scoffed and stormed outside to the patio with his drink. He’s hoping his date is ok with changing locations because he cannot stand the thought of staying near that prick.
His date, gosh he was so caught up in getting coffee he forgot to ask pidge for their number.

Pidge
L: Hey pidge, could you give me my blind date’s number?
P: did I not give it to you yet? My bad here, xxx-xxx?.
L: Thanks Pidge! Btw what’s their name?
P: oh it’s Keith
L: oh that’s funny
P: what?
L: the barista’s name is Keith too
P: yeah Keith works there
L: what
P: Keith was gonna go on the coffee date with you right after his shift.
L: I gotta go
~
Oh shit. He looked through the cafes windows at Keith who also looked to be staring right at him. Pidge said they would get along for some reason. Pidge said they had similar interests at least. What the hell could he have in common with that emo brat? Well one thing is certain. What kind of psychopath would want to go on a date right after their work shift? IN THE SAME BUILDING? Does he really have no time during the day to relax but right after his shift? Before he could ponder more though Keith stormed outside, seemingly after he changed out of his uniform.
“You were the blind date this whole time?” Keith announced a little louder now that they were outside. Lance hates to admit it, but Keith is so his type. But they had terrible conversating skills.
“Why would you wanna go on a date where you work? That’s so weird” Lance retorted quickly.
“I like coffee dates and it saves gas, it’s convenient,” Keith explained plainly.
“It’s also like the opposite of romantic,” Lance argued.
“What do you know about romance?” Keith said quickly.
“Apparently more than you!” Lance said, almost offended.
“Yeah, says the person who flirted with the barista right before a date, and then proceeded to say his name sucked.” Keith stared blankly at him.
“Oh what, like flirting with a hot guy is illegal? It’s not like we’re boyfriends. We didn’t even know each other yet!” Did he just call him hot?
Keith paused for a second, slightly blushing. Then the moment passed and he was back to arguing, “I honestly am having a hard time figuring out why Pidge told us to go on a date with each other.” That made Lance wonder too.
“Yeah,” Lance thought for a second, “it’s probably just some elaborate joke she played on us.
“That’s,” Keith began to disagree but then he thought about it, “yeah honestly it probably is.”
“God how did she guess that we’d turn on eachother like this though?” Lance pondered.
“Pidge has mysterious powers we do not question,” Keith answered like he believed it. Lance smiled.
“True, she’s like a magical prank wizard.” Lance chuckled at his weird word play, then got a funny thought. “Hey Keith,” Keith turned his head to look at Lance, he didn’t realize Keith was looking away, and he saw his beautiful eyes again. What a punk, him and his stupid beautiful eyes. “What if we played a prank back at her?”
