Work Text:

Since Wilbur could remember, it had always been him and Techno.

Twin gods. Identical, but yet so different from one another. Wilbur had always been loud and outgoing, he’d talk to anyone and everyone he could. Making friends had always been easy for him. It came so naturally, especially when his friends found out he was the God of the Sun and Music. They praised him for his music and everything the sun helped with.

But Techno was vastly different from Wilbur. Where Wilbur was so talkative and could talk for hours, Techno preferred to listen rather than talk like Wilbur did, and if he did talk, his words were very few and far between. He preferred being alone or just being with Wibur. While Wilbur was the sun, Techno was the God of the Moon and War. Not many people were too fond of him due to the latter, but Technoblade could care less. No one’s opinions mattered except for Wilbur’s. Sure he didnt have his name sung in praise unless there was a war going on, but he was fine with that. He was content with having little to no allies or friends.

Wilbur was not.

He hadn’t talked to another god except techno in a few hundred years. He missed it. He missed the feeling of talking to someone else who understood the pain of their immortality. Techno understood to an extent. He understood because of the animals he raised and how he had to watch them pass away in what felt like a flash.

But techno didn’t understand the feeling of watching a friend pass away, being forced to witness their bodies slowly reject itself, too many problems in one small body. It hurt to watch. So Wilbur gave up on befriending mortals. He couldn’t handle it anymore.

But being immortal was so loney.

Sure, he had techno and he would always have techno, but he wanted more. He wanted so much more than it being just the two of them. He was told what the mortals called the thing he had been yearning for, was a family. To have more than just one brother to care for. He wanted more.

It took wilbur a few years to even think of bringing the idea up to Techno, he was afraid of techno outright shutting it down. He knew Technoblade didn't like other people much, that he instead preferred their little circle just having them two and no one else. Once Wilbur did find the courage to bring it up, he was still nervous. He didnt wasnt to make Techno feel like he wasn’t enough.

He was enough!

Techno was his other half. The only person who seemed to know him better than even he did.

Thats how he knew something was up. Wilbur had been strangely quiet and had been keeping to himself lately. So, when Wilbur had asked Techno to talk about something, suspicion arose a little bit. He wanted to know what was bothering his brother so much that he seemed to change a bit.

Techno found himself sitting on the floor beside Wilbur, a cup of ambrosia in both of their hands. Techno waited for Wilbur to say something about what was bothering him. But he didnt. He seemed to be stalling as he rambled on about some new instrument he had created and how beautiful it sounded at the break of dawn when techno cut him off.

“Wilbur. We both know you didn't ask me to come to talk with you to hear you rambling about your new instrument. Stop stallin’ and get on with it.”

Wilbur seemed to falter a bit at the mention of his invitation to talk, but after a few moments, he lowered his head, looking into the cup of ambrosia with a soft sigh. “I didn't... You’re right, Tech. I wanted to talk to you because… I want us to meet more gods. I want to go and explore the world, Techno. It's been years since we last even heard from another immortal.”

Technoblade looked to Wilbur with an unreadable expression, silently. He set his cup down and crossed his arms over his chest.

“Wilbur…” Techno started, sighing. “No. We don’t need to get caught up in their wars and drama.”

Wilbur opened his mouth to try and convince Techno, but the look that he was given made him close his mouth immediately. There was no arguing or persuading him when he looked like that. He sighed and glanced down at his cup, “Okay. No getting involved.”

That didn’t stop Wilbur from bothering his brother over and over about meeting more gods.

Over the course of a few decades, Wilbur brought the idea up every few months. But every time he did, it elicited the same response from Technoblade every time.

“No, Wilbur.”

With each rejection, Wilbur slowly began to lose hope that Technoblade would ever agree to his idea. He started asking less and less. What was once three times a week, became once a week, then once a month. Then once every three months became once every six months. Finally became once every year and then once every two years.

Wilbur’s hope started to fade quickly, a few decades after the first suggestion, he decided he’d ask one final time before giving up. So, exactly 60 years after the first time he had brought it up, early in the morning, Wilbur went up to Technoblade and asked one last time, wholeheartedly expecting a flat-out no from him yet again.

“Sure.”

Wilbur’s face lit up as he whipped his head around to look at Technoblade, who was still simply reading his book, his face holding the same expression he had before he answered. “ wait what - Tech– sure?! Really?!” Wilbur asked with pure shock.

Technoblade nodded, “That’s what I said.” He closed the book, looking to Wilbur with a small smile. “There’s no more wars currently happening between any gods right now. There hasn’t been since a week after you last asked. I would’ve come to you and told you, but I thought you’d ask sooner or ask why I was sayin no.” he explained.

Wilbur’s expression seemed to somehow light up even more, he grinned excitedly and ran to his brother, wrapping him in a tight hug. “Thank you! Thank you!!” he repeated a few times.

Techno tensed at the contact and sighed softly, wrapping his arms around wilbur, gently patting the younger twin’s back. “ its nothin, Wil. But, i have a suggestion that i dont think you’d be all too happy hearin.”

Wilbur pulled away, looking up to techno, “i doubt it. Tell me. Im sure I’ll be fine with whatever it is.”

“I want us to split up and travel alone for a few years, Wilbur.”

“What?”

Wilbur’s jaw dropped, he hadn’t ever even thought about splitting up from technoblade. That’s his brother! The person who knew him better than anyone else did or ever would. Wilbur shook his head, “No. Absolutely not. We’re not splitting up, Techno.”

“We both know we have different ways of travelin, Wilbur. You go from city to city, talkin to everyone. I stick to small towns and forests. I avoid large gatherins like the plague. It’ll just be five years. Then we meet right back here with whoever we’ve met or convinced to follow along with us.”

Wilbur went silent, not speaking for a few moments.

Then he sighed and looked at Technoblade, “Five years. No more, No less. We meet right here?” he asked, trying to get a firm confirmation, which he got when Techno nodded and responded, “Right here. Five years.”

“Deal then. “ Wilbur agreed, then paused a bit as he leaned forward to hug Technoblade tightly, feeling his heart pull a bit as he choked up, tears welling in his eyes. “I’m gonna miss you, Tech…” He muttered under his breath, afraid if he spoke up any louder, his voice would crack and give away that he was on the verge of crying.

Techno didnt respond for a few moments, but he wrapped his arms around Wilbur again, holding his younger brother tightly. He knew this was going to be hard, but it didnt hit him just how hard it would be until now, when he found tears welling up in his own eyes as well. He gave Wilbur a soft squeeze, holding him a little tighter, “Im gonna miss you too, Wil.”

Five years isn’t a very long time.

Especially when you’re a god.

But it certainly feels like it when you’re away from someone you’ve been beside your entire life.

Still, time did fly very quickly for both Wilbur and Technoblade, even though they were far apart. They both kept an eye on the date, waiting for a certain date. The day they’d meet back up. Wilbur had kept a journal of what happened while they were gone. Techno did the same, but kept momentos instead of writing. Every memento was a story he already had memorized. Every battle he had fought in, had some sort of memento or trophy.

Both of them made a name for themselves.

Wilbur was known for his music and plays, having written so much music and so many plays, that people from far and wide knew his name and travelled just to see him preform his songs and plays.

Technoblade was known for his impressive swordsmanship and weapon knowledge. He was often found on battlegrounds, fighting someone with what looked like ease for him. He struck down the people who dared to challenge him or speak ill of his brother.

While performing a play about a year into the five year deal, Wilbur met a young boy named Theseus, who he later nicknamed Tommy, he was no younger than ten, but no older than fifteen, who seemed to gravitate towards the stars and radiate chaos wherever he went. Wilbur offered him a spot in his plays, creating a role purely for the young boy, who had happily agreed.

Through the years, Wilbur found himself attached to the young boy and noticed Tommy didnt grow like the other kids did. Then one night, while they were alone, Tommy confessed to being a young god, the god of the stars and chaos. Wilbur was happy to hear the news, glad he didn’t have to watch Tommy age and possibly pass.

A few nights later, Wilbur confessed to Tommy that he too, was a god, the god of the sun and music. Tommy too, was happy to know Wilbur was a god as well. They both shared stories of their adventures, Theseus had more, as he travelled more than Wilbur ever did.

With Technoblade, it took him much less time to meet someone. About six months into his journey, he met a blonde man with pitch black wings. The two met on the battlefield, both on the same side. Techno was impressed by his fighting style and they soon realized they were among the strongest there. Technoblade later learned his name was Phil. They had ended up chatting from time to time, which quickly turned into a friendship between the two.

It didnt take a genius to realize Phil wasn’t entirely human.

Among the wings and the way his eyes seemed to glow everytime he ended someone, there were more things that pointed towards him being more than a mortal. From the way he held himself, to the way cuts and bruises bruises, along with what should’ve definitely been broken bones, somehow healing or completely disappearing.

Technoblade ended up being the one to approach the other about his assumed Godhood. Phil had just smiled at the accusation and told Techno he was right. He revealed he was the God of the Sky and the God of Death, to which Technoblade revealed he was the God of the Moon and War. Techno later was informed that the God of Death wasn’t a lonely role, that he had a wife who shared the position, the Goddess of the Void, Kristin. Techno promised to meet her someday with Phil, hearing wonderful stories of her.

Then, the five years were up.

At the agreed meeting spot, what had expected to be just two, now stood five. Wilbur and Tommy met Phil and Kristin, who were quick to warm up to the duo. Tommy met Techno and Tommy almost immediately slipped into a younger brother-like role.

As the years passed by, it became clear. It was no longer just the two of them against the world. now, it was five.
