Ain’t No Sunshine When They’re Gone

Summary:

Phoenix and Maya are leaving for Khura’in Kingdom for a few months.

Edgeworth and Franziska are a lot more affected by this than they'd like to admit.

Edgeworth and Franziska being drama queens, the fic.

Notes:

Shoutout to Cesar_Franck, who I am dedicating this fic to. He was the one who had the idea of Franziska crying when Maya leaves, and that fic idea was just too amazing to pass up! This fic came out of this, and damn did I have fun with this LMAO. This was super fun to write! And again, I didn't have to worry about prose, which is always a bonus!

Well, that's all I have to say. Hope you enjoy this fic!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Hey, Franziska?”

Franziska was lying down on the bed next to Maya. She looked up from her book. “Yes, Maya Fey?”

“Um…I need to tell you something.”

Franziska raised a brow. “And that is?”

“I’m going to be leaving. I’m going to Khura’in Kingdom, I have spirit medium stuff to do. I’ll be gone for a really long time.”

“I see.” Franziska said, and then she asked. “How long will you be gone?”

“Around like, five months maybe? Hard to tell.” Maya sighed. “I’m sorry, Franzy.”

“It’s alright, Maya Fey.”

“Will you miss me?” Maya spoke up.

Franziska huffed in annoyance and shook her head. “Dear lord, of course not. I am not a foolishly sentimental fool. I have other things to think about.”

Maya pouted. “I’ll miss you though, Franzy.”

Franziska’s expression softened, though she said nothing. She went back to reading her book, and it kept everything in her power to not beg Maya to stay, or even to go with her. As she read her book, all she could think about was how cold the bed would be without Maya Fey anymore.

Edgeworth and Phoenix were out on a date, something that they didn’t do very often. Both of their jobs never left neither of them with much free time. Phoenix had picked out where they would eat, and they ate at a local cafe. Edgeworth would have preferred something more classy, but he was just glad he got to spend time with Phoenix at all. The two ate their food and talked about nothing in particular, it was always nice getting to talk to Phoenix, he had very interesting to say.

“Hey Edgeworth, I have something to tell you.”

Edgeworth raised a brow. “Oh? And that is?”

“Well…I’m going away with Maya to Khura’in Kingdom for a few months. You know, to take care of her and stuff. She was going to go alone, but I wouldn’t allow it.” Phoenix said.

“I see. How long will you be gone?”

“Like, five months maybe? I don’t know, I’d have to ask Maya.” Phoenix answered.

Edgeworth nodded.

“I hope you’re not upset.”

“I’m not upset, Wright. You care about Maya Fey deeply, and you’re just thinking of her safety. I understand that.”

Phoenix smiled. “Thanks Edgeworth.”

The two continued to talk about topics that caught their attention at that given moment. However as they talked, all Edgeworth could think about was how long he would have to go without the bright and cheery presence of Phoenix Wright.

Edgeworth was on his way to Franziska’s office, to talk to her about important work matters. He visited her office pretty often, despite Franziska’s protests to his visits. The two were siblings, after all, it was only natural that he visit her. This time though, something was different. As he walked over to the door of Franziska’s office, he heard something. From the other side of the door, Edgeworth could hear….music?

Ain't no sunshine when she's gone, it’s not warm when she's away. Ain’t no sunshine when she's gone, and she's always gone too long, anytime she goes away~” Franziska’s voice wailed through the door.

What the hell?

Edgeworth opened the door, and he saw Franziska kneeling on the floor, crying her heart out as she sang along to the song that was playing on her bluetooth speaker. He could see that her mascara was running down her face, which added to the dramatic affect. Franziska clutched her chest as she continued to sing, tears streaming down her face as she did.

Wonder this time where she's gone, wonder if she's gone to stay.” Franziska sang, though it was more of a wail than a song. “Ain't no sunshine when she's gone, and this house just ain't no home, anytime she goes away~

“…What are you doing?”

Franziska shot Edgeworth a glare. “I’m singing, what does it look like?”

“It sounds like you’re howling, like a wolf.”

Franziska rolled her eyes, continuing to sing along with the song. “I know, I know, I know, I know I know, I know, I know, I know, I know I know, I know. Hey I oughta leave young thing alone.

Edgeworth scoffed.

But ain't no sunshine when she's gone, woh woh. Ain't no sunshine when she's gone, only darkness every day. Ain’t no sunshine when she's gone, and this house just ain't no home, anytime she goes away. Anytime she goes away, anytime she goes away, anytime she goes away~

Edgeworth let out a sigh of relief, grateful that the song had ended. However, another sad song started playing, and Franziska sung again.

Hello darkness, my old friend. I’ve come to talk with you again, because a vision softly creeping, left its seeds while I was sleeping.” Franziska began to sing. “And the vision that was planted in my brain, still remains. Within the sound of silence~

Edgeworth groaned.

In restless dreams I walked alone, narrow streets of cobblestone. ’Neath the halo of a street lamp, I turned my collar to the cold and damp.” Franziska continued to sing, dramatically clutching her chest tighter. “When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light, that split the night, and touched the sound of silence.

Franziska was obviously miserable about something, though Edgeworth had no idea what that was. Edgeworth was sad too, what with Phoenix leaving to Khura’in Kingdom, but he didn’t sing and cry about it like a drama queen. He buried the feelings deep down in the recesses of his mind, hoping they would never resurface. That was the healthy way to do it, after all. Franziska continued to cry and sing, and Edgeworth frowned. He didn’t have time for this bullshit, he had a job to do dammit. Edgeworth walked over to Franziska’s speaker, turning it off.

“Miles Edgeworth!” Franziska hissed at Edgeworth.

Edgeworth turned to Franziska. “You’re sad about something.”

“No shit, Sherlock.”

“Franziska, just talk about your problems, instead of singing them.”

“Singing about it is more fun.“ Franziska rebutted

“You have an odd definition of fun…”

“Just leave, Miles Edgeworth.”

Edgeworth thought about it. He could leave, that certainly would be a lot more convenient…but at the same time, Franziska was his sister. He cared about her and her feelings, he couldn’t just leave her alone when she was obviously sad about something. So, he made a decision. He would comfort her, even if he had no idea what he was doing.

Edgeworth shook his head, sitting down next to the floor with Franziska. “No, I’m staying here. I want you to talk about your feelings…with me.”

Franziska looked at Edgeworth, as though he had grown a giant beanstalk out of his head. Though that would have been more believable than him being emotionally available. “Who are you and what have you done to Miles Edgeworth?”

Edgeworth was starting to regret this. “Just tell me what’s wrong.”

“Fine.” Franziska grumbled. “It’s just…Maya Fey is leaving for Khura’in Kingdom. She will be gone for five months, and…I’ll miss her…” She sniffled, her eyes welling up with tears. “I’ll miss Maya Fey, and her laugh, and her appetite, and her smile, and her laugh, and her hair, did I mention her laugh?”

Ah, that was what this was about.

“Franziska…” Edgeworth awkwardly patted Franziska’s back. “It’s alright, it really is.”

“It’s not!” Franziska burst out. “Maya Fey is leaving! She’s leaving me here all alone! She wants to dump me alone like an old person!”

“Uh…now now?” Edgeworth said, uncertainly. “It’s not like Ms. Fey is leaving…forever…never coming back…” He trailed off.

“…Miles Edgeworth, are you okay?”

“No!” Edgeworth said, and then he burst out crying. “Franziska…Ms. Fey isn’t the only one leaving…Wright is too…”

“They’re leaving us!” Franziska sobbed.

“They don’t love us anymore!” Edgeworth wailed.

Franziska couldn’t stop the tears that streamed down her face. “Maya Fey is going to find a beautiful Khura’inese girl and marry her, and they’ll have a beautiful wedding, and I won’t be invited!”

“Wright is going to find a muscular man and then they’ll hold each other, and then Wright will forget about me!”

“And they’ll get married!”

“Their wedding will be beautiful…and I won’t be there!” Edgeworth cried.

The two continued to cry, wailing about how their respective partners were leaving forever and didn’t love them anymore. Franziska opened up her arms, a sign that Edgeworth knew far too well.

“Awkward sibling hug?”

Edgeworth nodded. “Awkward sibling hug…”

The two hugged each other. They had no idea what they were doing, they never did whenever they hugged, but it was the thought that counted. They both cried into each other as they hugged, not caring about how undeniably ridiculous they looked as they did. Franziska even whipped at Edgeworth’s back as they hugged, though at this point Edgeworth was used to it.

Just as the two were hugging, that was when Gumshoe walked in.

“Hey sirs! I was just gonna ask you about-“ Gumshoe said, stopping himself midway as he saw Edgeworth and Franziska on the floor, hugging each other and crying. “Uh…is everything alright?”

The two didn’t respond, instead they continued crying.

“What, is someone you love leaving and never coming back?” Gumshoe said jokingly, unaware of how right he was.

Edgeworth and Franziska sobbed.

“Uh…sirs…?”

“WRIGHT DOESN’T LOVE ME ANYMORE!” Edgeworth wailed.

“MAYA FEY IS LEAVING FOREVER!” Franziska sobbed.

Gumshoe stood back, concerned and confused, and watched the two hug and cry.

“What in the hell…?”

Notes:
