When Annalise woke up, it was to the sound of her mother, venting at a man in white.
"--induced coma, but with trauma this severe--"
"I don't care. We'll make it work."
"...you have every right to exercise that option, as her parent. But I can't stress enough how slim her chances are. Are you sure--"
"We'll make it work. I can call my Uncle in Westchester, he can call in favors, we could keep her alive for a hundred years. I am NOT just giving up on her!"
"OK. OK. If you're sure."
"Goddamn right I'm sure. Put her under. She's getting through this."
The words didn't really mean a lot. She'd heard her mother yelling at someone so many times, it was soothingly familiar. The closest she'd ever gotten to singing a lullaby.
She closed her eyes and drifted off.
