Chapter 1: Prologue | Sunshine

Chapter Text

_______

You loved the sunshine. As a child, you'd venture out of your tiny home every morning, nuzzled in a cozy spot between the large trees covered in pale summer lichen, and go to a spot up the path to lay in the fuzzy grass that tickled your skin. You would stare into the blue sky, watching the fluffy clouds pass by for hours just taking in the serenity. The mountains were mossy and round, creating a soft shawl around the rocky shoulders that held up the blue ocean above. Sometimes other children would join you, giggling mindlessly to themselves about what cloud looked like cucco, or maybe a beetle that crawled up their legs. The sunshine felt like a warm hug.

One day, you went about your normal routine. It was a particularly overcast day, but that didn't stop you. You skipped on the rocks leading up the hill to your usual place near the pond. You laid on your back, getting cozy against the lush grass. It was strangely quiet in Kakariko Village; no bustling of your neighbors and villagers, no clucks of the cuccos, no singing of the birds, and an absence of your mother's voice calling for you to come back home as the hours went by. For such a popular village, it was nothing more than a ghost town. But you would learn soon, the peace did not last forever.

A breeze blew a chill through your body. Clopping of hooves hitting pavement grew louder, and as you sat up, you saw two men in full armor sitting on two horses approaching the entrance of your village. You got up and began to moving towards your home quickly. The two men got off their horses, which stood adjacent of the inn. You opened your door and slipped into the doorway. As you looked behind your shoulder, the men were following you briskly. You tried to close the door, but one man with dark hair kept it open with a strong arm.

Your mother, sitting in her chair near the dining room table, froze as her eyes set on the doorway. She looked down with her face glazed in grief. She stood and stepped towards the man, who pulled a rolled parchment from his satchel and showed it to her. "King Rhoam of Hyrule is to take your hand in marriage. You will move to the castle tomorrow. There will be no grounds for quarrel nor reasoning." He announced, staring her in the eye.

She nodded, her face screwing up in a pained expression. She bit back a sob. The knight put back the scroll and marched out of the house. You looked at your mother, she did not look back. She just cried and cried. You kept your mouth shut and turned away to follow the path back to the hill. The clouds were thicker and dark, threatening below with cold rain.

On the hill, you sat back down and stared at the sky, trying to remembering the sunshine.
