The canary

Summary:

After Jimmy dies he thinks about his role in the life series and his curse.

Work Text:

The canary has fallen once again.

Everyone makes jokes about the Canary. An omen of bad luck. Always first to get out, first to leave first to die. It started with 3rd life. Then last life, double life and now limited life. How was that possible? That’s all they were, jokes.

But the fact is, Jimmy was a favorite of the watchers. They found his screams of panic fun. They wanted to mess with him. And so they did so. He was one of the few who stood up to the watchers and he paid for it with his life. Many different times over.

Every time the life games hit, people wished him good luck. It’s not to say he didn’t appreciate the caring they showed him, even in a death game. Unfortunately it was all for not. He would try and break his curse of course, anyone would. However time that passes shows that no matter what he will not make it.

He could never break his curse. Jimmy was cursed by the watchers, beings sworn not to interfere and yet they did with him and his friends from EVO. Not that it matters about the past anyways. Not when he was bodiless in wait of a member to die after.

His curse meant two very important things. He would die first in every death game. Second, his death foreshadowed the end of the game. That his friends had reached their breaking point and would end up dying soon. Usually in the next time they were sent back. And he would have no choice but to watch his friends die in the games.

His curse was one of madness. Just like the canary in the mines, it showed the end was near. He had no choice in this curse. No one would willingly choose his fate, and he would never choose this fate for his friends either. Although after all this time they had seemingly picked up on his role.

“It’s sad he’s out first but the cycle continues….. I had so much faith he wouldn’t go out first this time…”

Cold words of comfort spoken as he spectated the world in front of him once his life was lost. His body gone and the thunder that showed his life was over gone from the sky, back to a wonderfully sunny day.

If Jimmy had a physical body he would sigh. The others didn’t know much other than his tendency to die first and in bad situations. The watchers preferred it that way. More fun for them if the others aren’t aware. Well that’s partially wrong. Four are.

Martyn was one who knew. All who did came from EVO. He was a listener just like Jimmy was. Martyn didn’t mind the curse that Jimmy was placed under. He seems to enjoy it. Not for evil reasons but the truth was, generally there was no harm in dying first. Grian and Pearl since the two of them are watchers.

The last was a man not on EVO. Scott known by so many to do as he wishes. To defy the Watchers and to live to see the next day. He once told the man about his curse. The other man had laughed on that beautiful day and promised that it wasn’t true. Even if it was, he would save the other.

So much good that promise did. Not that he ever believed it. The other man will likely be feeling that guilt of a broken promise now. Maybe that was his own type of curse….

It’s true he isn’t the greatest at pvp or surviving but the watchers make it impossible for him to live to the end. Always the first out. To make sure he stays in line.

The canary, the sacrifice for the watchers enjoyment. He watched as Joel went crazy. He sighed. It was amazing the other had held back the curse of the Mad King so long. But as always, the Mad King strikes again. Many have a curse that causes them to act in the life games.

Grian will always betray the one closest to him. This time Jimmy was that person. He felt honored honestly, the effect of another’s curse made his own not so bad. Joel will lose his mind in the games than swiftly die. If the man had a body he would have chuckled. It was funny that those with curses all teamed up for a game. His bad boys….

The canary fell once again. This time falling off a cliff, pushed and suggested by Grian. He knew better, of course he did. Frankly if he wanted to stay safe he would never team up with anyone.

But his heart can’t take it. He already has to wait until everyone dies to leave. A part of his curse is that the first person they see after death is him. Who better than the canary to welcome them into the after life after all. He takes this role with a smile.

It’s nice to see his friends. He holds them close as they sob into his arms, apologizing that he was the first one out. Or still on the hills of their madness, laughing at their own fate. Regardless he meets them with a friendly grin.

This time it was Skizz who died next. Skizz… he had no history with that man really. It didn’t matter either way. Those in life games understand the need for comfort after. Time meant nothing to the canary it mattered not how long time had passed. It was hard to understand what was going on when everything was happening at once.

He watched as his friends gave a hasty funeral. He watched people die. He watched Joel lose his mind. Did it really matter?

The canary has fallen once again. There was no hope. Was there any in the first place?
