Work Text:
The two demon lords crouched low in the grass surrounding them. Any one of their subjects would have gaped at how the two lords were hiding in the tall grass.
‘Mobei Jun move over, I can't see.’
‘My Lord, there is nothing to see.’
‘If there is nothing to see then you can move over- ‘
The shoving of the two demons increased until the sound of footsteps broke their impromptu fight and they both quickly ducked out of the way.
‘As you can see Immortal Masters, the Gate Way of the Gods has been standing unaffected by the elements since the first generation of cultivators and are the only example of the Heavenly Script in the moral realm.’ A older looking man said to the two cultivators walking behind him. The two of them were well dressed and listening intently to the guide leading them.
‘When did the script start to fade?’ The taller one asked, waving his fan idly as he gracefully glided behind the guide.
‘About a month ago, Immortal Master Shen.’ The man stated as they reached the black slab imbedded on the side of a cliff face, the golden words reaching high into the air and as the man said starting to fade at the top of the script.
‘Mn’ Shen Qingqiu hummed as he approached the wall, his fan hiding the expression on his face but not the furrowing of his brows as he analysed the writing.
‘Ahh- sir, did anything happen before the script started to disappear?’ The stuttering voice of the other cultivator asked hurrying to stay in step with the taller man.
‘Immortal Master Shang might not be aware but the last few winters we have had increasing encounters with demons which our cultivators have said to be interfering with the sanctity of the script.’ The guide looked nervous as an aura of irritation increased around him, unaware of the two demon lords mere metres from him.
‘It’s a possible explanation however it is also quite possible that the fading of the script has allowed demons to gain closer proximity.’ Shen Qingqiu muttered as he gazed at the writing. There was a pause before he turned to face the guide fully. ‘Do you mind leaving us to investigate? We have artefacts which might negatively affect non-cultivators.’
‘Of course, Immortal Masters, please don’t hesitate to return to the village when you’re done. We would be honoured to host you!’ And with that the guide turned and left the two by the Heavenly gate and the two demon lords in the bush.
There was a sustained silence and whilst the demon lords were lost in thought looking back to the guide before a sudden crack in the air and thud of fan hitting skin rang throughout the clearing.
‘You hack of an author!’ Lips curled up in a snarl and his hand raised to deal another blow.
‘OW bro what did I do now?!’ hands rubbing at the arm hit by the fan.
‘Heavenly script? Language of the Gods??!’ The anger in Shen Qingqiu's face grew ‘That!’ he pointed up to the great stone slab ‘Is English!’
The demon lords looked at each other in confusion as Shang Qinghua laughed nervously and rubbed the back of his neck.
‘Oh yeah, I forgot about that.’
‘You forget about everything!’
Another wacked echoed through the clearing and Mobei Jun suppressed a snarl.
‘Bro!’
A pinch to his brow as Shen Qingqiu evened his breath.
‘Wait bro does that mean you can read that?’ Shang Qinghua's eyes widened.
‘Surely you can read it too!’
‘Bro, you know my English sucks! I’ve been here so long, why would I need to remember?!’ The whining voice of Shang Qinghua echoed the clearing and the demon lords looked at each other in disbelief…. Their husbands not only know the name of the heavenly script… but they could read it too?
‘Why would you make English the heavenly script anyway?’ Shen Qingqiu looked away from Shang Qinghua and approached the wall again, this time reaching to a hand forward to trace the characters.
‘Bro, English is the most bullshit hard language of course I made it the ‘Heavenly tongue’ no one would be able to read it.’ A flippant hand followed this statement as Shang Qinghua also approached the wall.
Luo Binghe was desperate to know what was going on, they had inadvertently arrived at the same place as their husbands when investigating demons invading a human village, the same one which Shen Qingqiu and Shang Qinghua were also attempting to help.
Mobei Jun was intently staring at the two cultivators talking, although his face didn’t reveal much Luo Binghe could see the slight furrow in his brows indicating he was incredibly focused on this confusing situation.
They stood in silence for a while as Shen Qingqiu reached out with his Qi to analyse the stone.
‘There is nothing. It appears to be an ordinary stone face, there is no trace of anything let alone anything heavenly.’
‘….I mean you could just try and read the words on the wall’ rubbing the side of his nose as he gazed up into the height of the wall. ‘The words haven’t faded completely so I think you could read them all…. If you remember how to read English’
Shen Qingqiu gave him a look so dry he felt the moisture leaving his throat.
‘Un-like you Airplane-Bro I was actually fluent in English before I came here.’
Muttering under his breath about ‘rich second-gen kids’ which Luo Binghe had no idea about, they both stepped back to get a full look at the whole stone surface as Shen Qingqiu began to presumably recite the script in front of him.
Luo Binghe took a sharp breath as the words started to glow as his Shizun read them out and Mobei Jun stiffened in surprise as well.
The script of the God’s should only be known to Gods. How could their husbands know it? How could they read it and recite it??
Mobei Jun’s thoughts ran similarly. What did Shang Qinghua mean that he had been here so long that he had forgotten the script?
Both Mobei Jun and Luo Binghe came to the same conclusion as each other and looked at each other through the bushes in astonishment at the same time. Which for Mobei Jun was the slightest widening of his eyes and the raising of his eyebrows.
A sudden fierce wind blew past their hiding stop disturbing the grass they hid in. Shen Qingqiu had reached the end of the script and the rock face was crumbling!
No, it was opening! The Gates of Heaven were just that, a Gate to Heaven as it appeared both cultivators were staring into the opening vortex with unreadable expressions on their faces whilst their demon husbands fought to not be blown away.
‘Ahhhh bro what do we do now??’ A nervous chuckled left Shang Qinghua as they stared into the gate.
Shen Qingqiu stoically looked on face, not revealing a single emotion. His fan was still gently waving in front of his face before his eyebrow twitched and he reached for the stone slab which had cracked open like a door and started to manually shut the door.
Luo Binghe’s eyebrows had nearly escaped into his hairline and Mobei Jun wasn’t much better with the wind suddenly stopped he could stare at his Shizun as he started to force the doors to heaven itself back together. Surely their God husbands would want to go back home? Obviously, they didn’t want them to leave, and they were prepared to fight the very heavenly gate which threatened to push them out of their hiding spot but before they could gather their strength they were struck stone still by the immediate rejection of Shen Qingqiu.
‘This is wife plot #538 where a literal deity joins the Harem, I’m not dealing with this when I haven’t seen my husband in 2 weeks.’ And with one final shove the gates of heaven shut with a heavy thud. Shen Qingqiu glances up at the shining complete words and sighs ‘At least we can say we ‘fixed’ the words before we go back.’
Shang Qinghua stares with his mouth hung open and unseen in the bush so do the two demon lords before he chokes and suddenly breaks into chortles.
‘Bro, I can’t believe you just noped this situation!’ Shang Qinghua was grasping his stomach ignoring the glare and reddening face of Shen Qingqiu.
‘Whatever let’s head back!’ With a dramatic flick of his sleeve Shen Qingqiu gracefully walked back towards the village ignoring the still giggling Shang Qinghua begging him to slow down as he followed.
In the bushes the two demon lords gaped at the situation they had accidently seen. They once last time made eye contact.
‘Mobei Jun… are our husbands former Gods?’
‘….. I think so, my Lord.’
‘…..’
Both quickly jumped out of the bushes rushing back towards the town and their husbands, intent not necessarily on answers but to satisfy the hunger that had been sparked at this reveal.
