Work Text:
Law has been swamped with work.
Recent events at the hospital caused him to have to work extra hours and take patients files home to do paperwork and plan surgeries in his limited free time. He's the obvious choice to complete such tasks efficiently since he's arguably the best surgeon in the country and never says no to extra work, but it's tedious and unnecessary and Law hates it nonetheless.
He's working on his desk with a light illuminating the papers cluttering the workspace when he glances at the clock on his bedside table and realizes how late it is. Luffy has probably been hungry for a while, but ignored his stomach so he doesn't bother Law. Poor guy missed a couple meals. The fridge and pantry are getting empty, too, so he doesn't have a lot of snacks or easy meals to make.
Normally, either Law cooks for the two of them or they order from one of their favourite restaurants, but Law hasn't had time to cook since he's been busy with work the last few days. Luffy has tried to cook for them a few times during their relationship, but it always inevitably ends in disaster, so that's off the table. He now opts to sit still and look pretty while keeping Law company as he cooks.
Law is no prodigy in the kitchen, and his cooking pales in comparison to Sanjis, but it's healthier than most restaurants, and much better than Luffy's cooking. It's not like his partner complains about it, never being picky when it comes to food.
With a sigh, Law removes his glasses from his nose and pushes his chair away from his desk. He gets up and grabs a few things from his nightstand and closet before going out of the room towards the front door.
On the way, he spots Luffy playing video games on the TV upside down with his feet in the air and head dangling off the couch. Law ignores the adorable sight before him and throws Luffy's hoodie on his face, earning him an agitated "Hey."
"Get up. We're going to McDonalds."
Luffy's annoyed expression as he removes the red piece of clothing from his face instantly morphs into an excited one and he jumps off the couch and screams in excitement.
"McDonalds!!!!!!!!! Are we really going, Torao? For real?"
Law chuckles at his adorable husband for a moment before replying "Yeah, for real. But don't order the whole menu like last time." Law isn't the biggest fan of the fast food chain, but it's Luffys favourite and they deserve a break.
Luffy practically teleports to the front door while pulling on his favourite sweater with a strawhat-wearing jolly roger on the back, repeating, "I won't! I won't!" and simultaneously throwing on his shoes. By the time Law finishes getting ready, Luffy is vibrating by the front door, ready to explode.
Law chuckles and turns off the lights in their apartment before heading out and locking the door. Law obviously waits for the elevator down like a normal person, but Luffy, suddenly having way too much energy at his disposal, decides its a good idea to sprint down 6 flights of stairs to their car. Law deliberately takes more time than necessary to unlock the car to tease an out-of-breath Luffy, who is screaming at Law to hurry up while aggressively pulling on the door handle.
As soon as they're in the car, Luffy starts talking about what he did while Law was working--which was mostly going in-depth about the current level he's stuck on in the new game he's hyper-fixated on--and what he'll be ordering from his favourite fast food place. Law listens intently while driving and occasionally asks a few questions to egg Luffy on and keep him talking.
God, Law missed this more than he wanted to admit. Being stuck working from home all day really did a number on him. How much he would give to be next to Luffy, even just reading, as he plays a game or they watch a show together instead of having to listen to him explain it hours later.
Well, this'll be enough for now. Being around Luffy and hearing his voice is comforting in and of itself, something Luffy knows, which is why he gives extra attention to never stop talking. It allows Law a break to unwind and relax.
Arriving to the McDonalds drive-thru, they're relieved to see its relatively empty. They'll need all hands on deck to get Luffy's order done in a timely matter, after all.
"Hello and welcome to McDonalds, how can I help you?"
"Hi. Can we get 3 McDoubles, 6 Big Macs, 4 McCrispys, 3 Chicken and Bacon McWraps with Crispy Chicken, 3 large fries, 2 packs of 20 chicken McNuggets, and..."
"A happy meal!!" Luffy adds.
"A happy meal. With a toy."
The lady on the other side goes silent for a moment before hesitantly asking, "Is that all?"
"Nope. Can I get..." Law pauses for a second to survey the menu and see what he wants, "a Quarter Pounder BLT. And for drinks, can we get apple juice, a large strawberry triple thick milkshake, a large hot chocolate, a large diet coke, and..." Law pauses again to decide his own drink. Luffy whines at the addition of 'diet' next to his 'coke,' but instantly lights up again at something on the menu and leans in to whisper in Laws ear "a medium Sprite. Oh, and 2 McFlurrys. Actually, your ice cream machine is always broken. Then, 2 baked apple pies. That's all, thank you so much."
The silence is loud on the other end. "Um, okay, yeah. Please pull up to the next window."
"Great. Thank you again." Is all Law says before looking straight ahead and driving forward. Next to him, he can hear Luffy try to suppress an excited squeal, and Law smirks at his immature partner.
"Are you happy?"
"Yes. Yes! Thank you so much, Torao. I'm soooo hungry!" Luffy would be bouncing off of his seat if it were't for the seatbelt wrapped around him.
"Yeah, I could tell. You didn't have to wait for me, you know. You could've eaten something yourself."
"Nonsense!" Luffy huffs, "I always wait for you, Torao. Even if you come home super duper late from the hospital."
Law smiles as he stops the car in front of the small drive-thru window. "I know, love." He turns to Luffy, who was staring at him with nothing but adoration and gratitude, and gives him a quick peck on the lips, which Luffy decides for the both of them isn't enough, and forcefully grabs the back of Laws neck and chases his lips for more.
They're still like this when the window opens to begin their outpour of food. "Sorry for the wait," is the only thing the teen manages to say before Luffy breaks the kiss and leans over Law to grab the first bag of food while screaming, their intimate moment being long forgotten. It's not like Law wants to stop him when Luffy's stomach keeps growling loudly and his eyes are sparkling like this is the best meal he's ever seen in his life, or that he even can be stopped, for that matter.
Luffy shoves a hand into the bag and grabs the first item he feels, not even checking to see if it was Laws. Luffy knows Law doesn't really mind, even if he tries to look annoyed every time he accidentally eats his food.
By the time they get all of their food and Law pays, Luffy already devoured the first bag, and was reaching for the second when Law smacks his hand.
"At least wait until we get back home before eating everything." Law reprimands with a chuckle.
"But Toraooooooooo I'm so hungry! I've been waiting all day!"
"It's just a few minutes, darling. I think your stomach can handle it."
Luffy pouts, but controls himself nonetheless. From the corner of his eye, Law sees Luffy fighting with himself over the food oh-so-close to his hands, and therefore his mouth and stomach. In the end, he listens to Law, and they manage to get inside the apartment and to their dining room table before Luffy devours 3 more bags in Laws one burger.
When they both finish dinner, Luffy takes out the pies they got while Law gets up to grab ice cream from the freezer he secretly picked up last time they went grocery shopping, to Luffy's excitement. Law grabs two bowls and two spoons, but only ends up using one of each, since Luffy becomes adamant of feeding Law his dessert. He even makes sure the ice cream is of Laws preferred consistency, something Law is extremely picky about for some reason.
As they clean up the small mess they made from dinner, Luffy attempts to convince Law to ditch his work and hang out with him yet again, which, to his dismay, fails. As he dramatically flops back onto the couch to continue lounging around by himself, Law cups his cheeks, kisses him on the forehead, and whispers "I love you" in the space between them. Luffy smiles softly and says it back with just as much care before Law straightens up and heads back to his desk, leaving a giggling Luffy in his wake.
Returning to his desk, Law realizes he's actually not at all prepared to go back to work, and in reality just wants to spend more time with his husband. He sighs and pushes that to the back of his brain the same moment he pushes his glasses to the bridge of his nose and continues dejectedly reading meaningless medical files.
The passing of time is only marked by the occasional yelp, laugh, or frustrated scream from Luffy just outside his bedroom door, clearly still stuck on the level he had told Law about earlier. Every sound that leaks through the door attempts to persuade Law to forget his responsibilities and focus on Luffy, a thought he stubbornly ignores.
It's only when he hears the hallway lights turn off and the bedroom door creak open that Law glances away from his desk to see a sleepy Luffy at the doorway. He mumbles something about Torao never coming to see him as he waddles over and hugs Laws neck from behind. Law places a reassuring hand on Luffys arm while saying "Sorry, love. I still have work. Go to sleep without me, hm?"
"But the bed will be cold!" Luffy whines, "And I miss you!! Damn hospital. Give. Me. Back. My. Husband!" Luffy frustratedly huffs, shaking Laws shoulders with every word. He sighs and rests his forehead on the back of Law's head, breathing in the scent of his shampoo. He stays like that until Law feels him slumping over and snoring slightly, which is when he gives him a quick shake, along with a "Go to bed, Luffy-ya," that startles him awake. He grumbles the whole time he's getting ready for bed, but quickly dozes off as soon as he's under the covers.
Before Luffy can fall asleep completely, Law gets up and walks over the give Luffy another kiss on the forehead.
"Goodnight. I love you."
Luffy struggles to open his eyes, but once he does, he whispers, "I love you more." And reaches up to caress Law's face. Law chuckles, and they stay like that for a moment longer before he leaves again to continue working at the desk next to Luffy.
When he finishes working, it's nearing 2:00 am. He has other things to do, but he finished the most time-consuming task, and unfortunately, Luffy taught him healthy sleeping habits, so he resigns for the night and decides its finally time to spend some well deserved time with his husband.
Law enters the bathroom to brush his teeth, changes into more comfortable clothes for sleeping, and gets into bed to cuddle next to Luffy.
As he winds down under the covers and attempts to hold Luffy as close as possible, he feels the headache he had been ignored subside. Luffy stirs in his sleep and Law quietly asks "Did I wake you?" To which Luffy stubbornly replies "Hm, no. I was waiting for you," which earns a puff of amusement from Law.
Luffy turns to face Law and attempts to kiss him on the lips through closed eyes, which fails with a giggle, so Law leans in to fix that mistake.
The kiss is nothing special, just a peck that lasts a few seconds, but it does wonders for Laws stress. When he pulls back, he can see Luffy with a somber expression on his face. He knows Luffy doesn't like falling asleep by himself, as he finds it lonely, but it couldn't be helped today.
"I missed you."
"I know, darling. I'm sorry."
"Do you have to keep working tomorrow?"
"Yeah. I think I might finish before the end of the day, though. We can do something together in the evening."
Luffy lights up at those words and flashes his million dollar smile. Law swears that for a split second the whole room glows brighter.
"I'm excited then! For tomorrow!" Luffy beams. "Thank you for everything, Torao. Especially the McDonalds. I love you so much." It's said with so much sincerity and love that Law doesn't doubt it for a second.
Luffy kisses Law in every bit of his face, stealing a few from his lips and wherever he can reach. Law all but melts at the gesture, and kisses back when he can. He pulls Luffy closer and sighs, wishing the moment could last forever.
As the kissing grows slower and further apart, Law allows himself to close his eyes and truly rest for the first time since he woke up. They fall asleep holding each other close, content and relaxed. There's nothing either of them could want more in that moment but to be together.
The following day will no doubt bring frustrations and annoyances, but being able to be in each others company at the end of the day makes it all worth while.
