Blue Rain Quarterly Team Memo: From the Desk of Yu Wenzhou
I’m excited and honored to be chosen as your new captain this year. I can’t hope to replace Captain Wei or Captain Fang, but together I hope we can be the best Blue Rain possible.
A few housekeeping items:
- The cafeteria will be closed for repairs for the next four weekends. An additional stipend will be provided to all team members to purchase their meals outside.
- A new feedback box is now installed in the team lounge. Please send me your suggestions. The box is open to all members of the main and reserve teams!
- Starting next week we’ll be having a bi-weekly board game night. Prepare to be trounced by your new vice-captain, he’ll beat you every week because he’s so good at games, he’s the best there ever was!!!
Please join me in welcoming Vice-captain Huang Shaotian and Spitfire Zheng Xuan to the team. Looking forward to many summers of Blue Rain with you.

Spotlight on Dual Core Tactics Featuring Team Blue Rain
Season 4 is in full swing, and what a season it’s been. No one anticipated the staggering number of high-profile players who would debut into the professional scene. Their unique approach to the game is already rippling through the Alliance.
Speaking of fresh perspectives, we’re in the midst of another sweeping revolution. Dual-core tactics are on the rise. It’s an arrangement first popularized in Season 2 by Hundred Blossoms’ Sun Zheping and Zhang Jiale, two powerful players joining forces to fight as one. On the field, Blood and Blossoms are as ruthless as they are visually stunning. And while they weren’t enough to stop the rampage of Excellent Era’s One Autumn Leaf, no one can deny the effectiveness of their teamwork.
Now, teams across the Alliance are racing to form their own dual cores. But not every pair is following in Hundred Blossom’s footsteps. At Tyranny, Zhang Xinjie and Han Wenqing showcase a unique style of give-and-take by passing the mantle of shot caller between them. Immovable Rock cuts off all avenues of escape while Desert Dust pummels their enemies into the dirt. Even Excellent Era isn’t immune to the dual core bug. The debut of beauty Su Mucheng has provided Ye Qiu with a steady and dependable supporting partner.
And then there’s Team Blue Rain. Rather than fighting side-by-side, Troubling Rain and Swoksaar prefer to keep their distance on the field. This is most likely due to Captain Yu Wenzhou’s severely below-average hand speed making it difficult—if not impossible—for him to keep up with Huang Shaotian. Yet these two very different players have proven they can work together.

Don’t let their unique style fool you. It might not seem like they’re actively teaming up when their avatars are on opposite ends of the battlefield, but looks can be deceiving. Opponents of Blue Rain have experienced the devastating effectiveness of their dual-core tactics. Huang Shaotian's talent for seizing any opportunity is already razor-sharp, and Yu Wenzhou’s ability to actively create openings kicks it into overdrive. It’s no wonder they’re becoming known as Sword and Curse.
While Blue Rain has stumbled in recent matches, that’s more to do with the other teams adjusting to their tactics than any hiccups in their teamwork. It will be interesting to see how Blue Rain compensates. Despite recent defeats, they’re slated to make it to the playoffs.
The season is far from over but one thing is for sure. One plus one is truly greater than two.

Dear Sword and Curse, my parents won’t let me get a pet but I really want one! I read all the books and know how to care for one. How can I convince them? How did you convince your parents to let you join Blue Rain?
Sword: When I first wanted to be a pro player, my parents said no! No way, you have to go to school. You have to go to college. But I asked them every single day and told them how great Blue Rain is and wrote them a list of one hundred reasons why I was so good. And then Captain Wei came to my house and talked to them. Just keep asking until they say yes.
Curse: My parents were also skeptical. I signed up for Blue Rain on my own and paid the application fee with the money I made tutoring my classmates. I’m not recommending you come home with a surprise pet, but if you save up enough money to buy food and toys, you can show your parents that you’re ready to accept this responsibility.

Dear Sword and Curse, I have a hobby I love but I’m not very good at it. Everyone makes fun of me no matter how hard I try so I’m thinking of quitting to try something else. Any advice?
Sword: Don’t quit because of them!!! They’re stupid, they’re so stupid if they can’t see what’s right in front of them. I bet you're great, they just haven’t figured it out yet. Let me tell you a secret. I’m not proud of it but I’ll tell you. I once said some not great things to a person who I didn’t think was very good. And I apologized later, I apologized so much. If I could go back, I’d tell that person every day how great they are. I’d tell them they’re the best player I ever met except for Old Ye. The best! Don’t let anyone tell you you’re no good. Stay and fight!
Curse: It’s hard to leave behind a hobby you enjoy. Ask yourself if you’re quitting because you truly don’t enjoy it or because of the people around you. If it’s the latter, consider going elsewhere before leaving behind what you love. If you can, try ignoring the taunts and focusing on what you love about your hobby. Sometimes all it takes is the right time and place to change everything, including the opinions of those around you. But if you’re truly unhappy, there’s no shame in leaving.

Dear Sword and Curse, I need to win an argument. what’s the best thing to wear for a massage
Sword: Wear? Why would I wear anything that’s so weird, stuff would just get in the way.
Curse: Shaotian is right. Skin-to-skin contact is the most effective method. It also allows you to more easily tell if your partner is in pain or distress. Remember, it’s okay to be sore, but there shouldn’t be intense pain.

Blue Rain Quarterly Team Memo: From the Desk of Yu Wenzhou
Good afternoon, team. While we prepare for the upcoming playoffs, a few items of note.
After last week’s incident, we will no longer be playing monopoly at team game nights. I expect the tiny plastic hotel pieces to be removed from the ceiling before this evening’s practice.
To whoever put the “permanently unneeded 😭” sign on the door to the women’s bathroom, let me remind you that there are plenty of people in the staff and the training camp who use those facilities.
Starting tomorrow, we will be ordering new keyboards and mouses for the team. Please let me know your preferred brand and model.
We evaluated all the suggestions in the feedback box, and after discussion with Manager Liu, we are upgrading the team common area:
- Expect a new couch in the lounge soon.
- Free earplugs (For rest and relaxation. They are not for ignoring your vice-captain.)
- Despite popular demand, phones remain forbidden in the training room and will be confiscated.
Unfortunately, we could not accommodate the request to replace afternoon training with team naps. Please continue to work hard!

Sword: I like to PKPKPK, it always makes me feel better. And by watching the team train at the gym!
Curse: I decompress by lifting weights at the gym and soaking my feet in a hot bath.
Bullet Rain: The best way is to tell everyone. Try it, you’ll feel better.
Additional note from Captain Yu: Even if you don’t have asthma like me, keeping stress under control is important for health. In addition to relaxing activities, I talk about my problems with the team’s counselor. Zheng Xuan’s strategy of talking to friends is also a good idea.

Tiny Herb: The Rise and Fall of the Magician
With the conclusion of Season 5, everyone’s talking about Team Tiny Herb. Captain Wang Jiexi led his team in an explosive match against Hundred Blossoms and clinched their first championship win.
Yet we have to wonder: Where is the Magician?
During his debut in Season 3, Wang Jiexi shocked the pro circle with his erratic and unpredictable playstyle, earning him the name of the Magician. Yet we’ve been seeing less and less of this unique style as time goes by. Gone are the days when opponents were left baffled and bloody by this incomprehensible combination of seemingly random maneuvers.
Perhaps Wang Jiexi is simply tired of maintaining such an exhausting style, or perhaps something deeper is at play. Clearly, it isn’t affecting the team’s performance. If anything, Tiny Herb’s cohesiveness has improved dramatically this season. Even Blue Rain’s famed dual-core, a partnership well-known for teamwork, couldn’t break past their offensive.
Still, it begs the question: What is the future of the Magician? Is its disappearance only temporary, or has Wang Jiexi sealed it away forever?

Sword: 20/10. It’s like learning new skills in Glory. You don’t know if you can do it unless you try. It’s okay that it doesn’t always work out, that’s why the captain assigns us so much practice. Dear Sword and Curse, I’m having a bad day. Tell me something funny?
To help cheer you up, we invited a few more team members to chime in!
Bullet Rain: One time a cockroach invaded our training room and Yu Feng screamed so loud. I was more scared of him than the roach. The best part was that instead of running away, the cockroach ran toward the screaming. We had to cancel practice. Every day I hope for more bugs.
Receding Tides: That time Huang Shao inhaled a helium balloon during the captain’s birthday celebration and trash-talked like a chipmunk. It was the absolute funniest thing I’ve ever heard in my life. I wish I’d recorded it.
Brilliant Edge: Zheng Xuan tried to pet a stray cat and it pissed on him. Turns out Fang Rui isn’t the only one with a golden right hand.
Sword: Right after Yu Wenzhou got his wisdom teeth taken out, he sent me a picture of a cute squirrel he saw from the car window. Which isn’t funny at all and you asked for something funny. But what’s funny is that the captain was still woozy from the medicine and he didn’t know he took the picture with the front camera. He sent me a photo right up his nose! It was so great, I used it as my lock screen for the whole summer.
Curse: In the prep room before our first match against Tyranny, Shaotian tripped and fell into Captain Han’s arms like a swooning maiden. I don’t know which of them had the funnier expression on their face. I keep waiting for Captain Han to return the favor but so far no luck.
Desert Dust: Be grateful. If I fell into Huang Shaotian’s arms, I’d crush him like a pancake
Swoksaar: You might be surprised. Shaotian is quite spry
Desert Dust: Oh. I didn’t realize the rumors were true.

Desert Dust: Never mind.

Dear Sword and Curse. How does it feel to be THE BEST TEAM!!!
Sword: The best, the best, the best, we were always the best and now everyone knows it. We couldn’t have done it without the best team and the best captain! And our Spitfire who always comes through when it matters. Our Berserker who never quits. The best (but not according to his sister) Qi Master. And the fastest most handsome Blade Master in the world! Blue Rain forever!
Curse: It was a team effort. Thank you to the Blue Rain team for fulfilling my dream this summer. None of us could have done it alone.

Dear Sword and Curse, do you ever get nervous before a game? How do you handle it? I want to try out for my school basketball team but I know I’m going to look like an idiot. Please help.
We’re excited to welcome special guest Receding Tides, operated by Song Xiao, to help answer today’s question.
Sword: It’s okay to be nervous but don’t let what people think hold you back! When I first debuted, I read all the articles people wrote about me. The good ones and the bad ones. A lot of the things they said were really mean. But the only way to make it stop would be to retire and wait for them to forget. So I’d rather do what I want to do, and ignore everyone else.
Curse: I used to be far more nervous before matches than I am today, but I do still get nervous. What if my tactics aren’t the right ones? What if I didn’t choose the correct lineup? What if we lose because I didn’t make the right choice? I get nervous about all of these things, and that hasn’t gone away even after winning a championship. But when I start thinking about that too much, I remind myself that all I can do is try my best. Sometimes it will work out, and sometimes I’ll make big mistakes, but I would rather make a mistake than do nothing. Anyone who says they never get nervous is lying to you. Go try out for your team. You might make it or you might not, but either way, you will have tried your best.
Receding Tides: Everyone knows I play better in the playoffs than in the regular season. What they don’t know is that it made my first year at Blue Rain difficult. I was constantly worried I would be kicked off the team for not being good enough. My first playoff game was such a relief because it was the first time all season that I played the way I knew I was capable of. I still get scared before every playoff game because what if this is the time I stop playing my best? But my team trusts me and I’ve learned to trust myself. I hope you can learn to trust yourself, too.

Sword: I’ll go first! What a good question, a great question. Listen up because I have the best story for you about our captain. If you ever watched our Blue Rain interviews, you would know that there’s a curfew when we travel. It’s the worst rule ever and it’s only there to torture us.
Curse: The rule is so no one stays out too late before the match.
Sword: The very good rule is because we might stay out too late before the match and get tired. It’s a very strict curfew, didn’t I say the captain is so strict. I mean, responsible. One time Song Xiao had to clean the bathroom for a week because he bought dill pickle potato chips and got back five minutes after curfew. He still says that pickles remind him of toilet water. Ew, gross. But wait I was talking about the captain.
Curse: Oh, were you?
Sword: I was! And I was saying that hypothetically, if someone on the team who was the captain ever broke the team curfew, then he definitely wouldn’t be punished for it. He certainly wouldn’t have to stay late after training every day and tidy up the practice room.
Curse: I do that anyway.
Sword: He wouldn’t have to write a one-page apology letter to the team for setting a bad example. He would never have to read the letter out loud and promise to be more obedient in the future. And the letter would never be framed and hanging up in the lounge behind the captain’s favorite chair.
Curse: I think the vice-captain’s imagination is so good. Perhaps he needs extra training to burn off his excess energy.
Sword: The captain never breaks the rules ever.

My friend is a great guy but he’s never dated anyone before. At least, not that I know about. No, he’s definitely never dated anyone, he’s way too busy and important for that. But lately he’s been going on blind dates. I think maybe his parents are pressuring him to get married. How can I stop him from making a terrible mistake?
Sword: Don’t think of it as losing a friend, think of it as your friend gaining someone else. Don’t you want him to be happy, even if it’s with someone you think is a mistake? Isn’t it worth it if it means he can be happy?
Curse: It’s good that you’re concerned about your friend, but this is a decision he has to make on his own. Be careful that you don’t cling too hard to the way things used to be, or you may end up pushing him away instead.

Dear Sword and Curse. Do you ever get into fights?
Sword: Of course we do! Everyone fights. We just got done with a fight the other day. And I'll tell you about a different fight we had before that one. I like to get up early and the captain always sleeps in. It's because tactician brains work so hard, so he has to get enough sleep to come up with all his great ideas. Anyway, I guess I woke him up too early, because he lost his temper and snapped at me. It was actually pretty funny because he had terrible bedhead. I knew he wasn't really angry, just tired and cranky. And I was right. Later after practice, he brought me my favorite strawberry ginger matcha boba with cheese foam, and then he apologized.
Curse: Shaotian's right. We have our share of fights, but we always make up afterwards. It helps to talk about it so we can understand why the other one got upset. To add onto Shaotian’s story, after we talked, we agreed that he would make more of an effort to let me sleep in. And in return, I'm extra conscious about not snapping at him on the occasions when something truly needs my attention that early. (Or when Shaotian forgets.) Even when I'm grumpy and tired.
And for the record, I don't sleep late, it's just that Shaotian springs awake at the crack of dawn.

Training Camp Scandal at Blue Rain
The esports world was rocked to its core last week when an anonymous source claimed that Blue Rain Captain Yu Wenzhou was once the victim of bullying by his current partner, Huang Shaotian. Yu Wenzhou was quick to address the allegations with a press conference that included both himself and Huang Shaotian.
Fans were shocked and dismayed when Huang Shaotian personally confirmed the rumors to be true. Yu Wenzhou was quick to jump to his defense, stating that the incident occurred a long time ago and he considered the matter settled. He went on to tell a heart-wrenching story about how Huang Shaotian sincerely apologized to him before their shared debut in Season 4. Both Yu Wenzhou and Huang Shaotian were adamant that Blue Rain does not tolerate bullying of any sort.
We at Esports Weekly had the chance to speak with several current members of Blue Rain’s training camp under the cover of anonymity. The interview corroborated what Captain Yu and Vice-captain Huang claimed. All of the trainees we spoke to said that Blue Rain is a place where everyone feels welcome, regardless of skill level.
The press conference ended the same way it started: With Yu Wenzhou and Huang Shaotian standing shoulder-to-shoulder.

Dear Sword and Curse, what’s your favorite part about working with each other?
Sword: I used to think speed was the most important thing. Sure, you need to be smart and sneaky and memorize so many things about all the different classes if you want to take your enemies by surprise, but what good is all that if you aren’t quick enough to use it before you get killed? But then I met Yu Wenzhou. He doesn’t let his slow hands stop him. He’s so good at outsmarting his enemies and guiding them into his traps until he wins. And he’s proof that when you have a good team, you’re stronger together than you are apart. I’m a better Glory player because Yu Wenzhou is my teammate.
Curse: Every day, Huang Shaotian reminds me why I love to play Glory. It isn't just about the excitement of creating new tactics. Glory is fun. No matter how much pressure is placed on the team or on myself, listening to him talk while we practice together is a reminder that I came here because I love to play Glory. I love playing Glory and I love playing with Huang Shaotian. I hope to do so for many more years.

Ask Sword and Curse
Dear Sword and Curse, I have an important presentation at work soon and I never sleep well before stressful events. Any tips you can share?
Sword: I have so many tips! Did you know that I couldn’t sleep at all the night before my first match? I tossed and turned so much but nothing worked. Finally, in the middle of the night, I went to the training room to blow off steam but I was so keyed up I couldn’t even play. All I could do was walk in circles over and over and over again. I was afraid the captain would be mad if he knew because we all had instructions to get good sleep before the game. So you can imagine how surprised I was when the training room door opened and it was the captain who walked in! I think he was almost as surprised as me. We just kind of stared at each other, and then we were laughing. We ended up talking on the couch behind the computers until we both fell asleep. So yeah, talk about it to someone you trust! It helps a lot.
Curse: I remember that night. I ended up sleeping very well in the end. It can be hard to force yourself to relax when your mind is too active. Finding a good distraction is an excellent way to calm your mind and prepare for sleep. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a partner with Huang Shaotian’s unmatched verbal skills, so I would recommend playing music or reading a book or doing a word puzzle before bed. Another tactic I like is going to the gym after dinner so I’m physically tired before sleeping.

Dear Sword and Curse. My work has a feedback box set up by our boss. Normally our deputy leader checks the box but on this day the leader delegated it to me. One of the items in the box was a, umm. a private suggestion from the deputy leader to the leader. I don’t even know why the deputy leader would put a suggestion into the box that he himself checks but whatever. I need to bleach my eyeballs ten times. What am I supposed to do?
Sword: That was ONE TIME, Zheng Xuan!!! One time!
Curse: From now on, only the vice-captain is allowed to check the feedback box.
