Chapter 1: A forgotten detail

Chapter Text

Coco smirked to herself as she made another note in her notebook. Sure computers were the best option but there was something about writing down her conquests, and victories that made them all the sweeter.

Coco Adel 'Master Matchmaker' had a great ring to it after all. She was the Mistress of love, or rather she excelled at finding would-be couples and setting them up.

The first few had just been out of boredom, but after her first few went off without a hitch she noticed she started getting people asking for help. Human and Faunus alike.

Of course rules had to be established. The first being if Coco, or Velvet didn’t have a good feeling about the pairing she didn’t do it. If she said no that was it. She wanted to set up couples that could last a lifetime, not ticking time bombs after all.

While her expertise was of more value to the baby gays on campus she’d still helped a few of the straight folk find a good partner. No reason to turn ‘em down after all.

Besides it’s not like Ren and Nora even really needed a push, well not really.

Ren had merely wanted advice on making sure he cherished her properly. Coco had to admit that from what she’d seen and observed they were honestly a pretty cute couple.

The fact that Ren cared enough to ask for her opinion spoke well of him, and the way he listened with rapt attention even more so. Honestly? She hoped Nora appreciated him because if she didn’t there’d be plenty of others who could and would take him off her hands.

Of course setting herself up with the greatest bunbun in the world was a simple task. Velvet was putty in her hand when she’d asked.

“You actually almost fainted and had to sit down and breathe for a couple minutes,” Velvet corrected her girlfriend from the bed in their shared dorm room.

“Velvet what did I say about correcting my monologue?” Coco whined to her girlfriend.

“To just make sure it was factual…and it was,” Velvet smirked at her with a wink. “Besides, while you deserve a lot of credit I’m here to make sure you’re accurate and stay humble.”

Velvet was far spunkier than her initial appearance would indicate, but she was adorable and on lockdown. Coco knew a good thing when she saw it. While there would never be a better match than her own there were others she was proud of.

Sun and Neptune had been an amusing pair. Neptune had to have it pointed out to him that normal bros didn’t sleep in the same bed, and make out with their friends. Sun had asked for help in making him realize he wasn’t exactly straight.

That had taken two weeks longer than it should have.

“It was kinda cute how devoted Sun was to letting him figure it out at his own pace, though,” Velvet put in her own two lien as she turned the page in her book.

Coco privately agreed.

Most recently she’d gotten Yang Xiao Long and Blake Belladonna to finally get together. That one…that one had been nearly an entire year of making progress and backpedaling.

There were times she was almost tempted to throw them in a closet but that would have been more of problem than a solution with that pair.

Blake was so skittish about committing and Yang’s own past had left her with issues of her own that she honestly wondered if they would get together at all.

Still, in the end it had been worth it to see them shyly confess their feelings, and agree to a date.

“Except for one really minor thing,” Velvet interrupted seriously as she walked over to their window which overlooked the quad.

“What’s that bunbun?” Coco asked as she mentally reviewed everything she’d done recently to see if she’d done something to upset Velvet.

Velvet pointed out the window and Coco took a glance following her beloved's finger.

Oh...shit. She’d forgotten all about Ilia. Ilia Amitola was a lot of things, but the one almost everyone knew was that she had the worst kept ‘secret’ crush on Blake.

The same Blake she’d just set up.

“You’re not going to leave her all alone are you?” Velvet asked with her arms crossed as she began tapping her foot on the floor. Her face and countenance screamed that there was only one acceptable answer. Velvet was all heart honestly.

“Wouldn’t dream of it Velvs,” Coco assured her as she tried to think of a way to fix this.

Clearly Ilia had just moved to the top of her list of cases to work on.

Thankfully most of her professors had given her a syllabus at the start of the semester and she was nearly done with it all. Granted she had to show up to class to do tests, but the homework she’d handed in ahead of time.

Sure that had been a sucky three weeks but the free time was unrivaled. Except for Port who made her go to class anyway or he’d fail her. God she hated that class. Who even wanted to listen to his war stories anyway?

“Did you have someone in mind already?” Velvet asked, her chocolate brown eyes searching her for any sign of deceit.

What did she know about Ilia? Shy, actually kind of adorable when you got her excited about something, liked cloud watching, ate way more chocolate than you'd think possible. Was exceedingly gay. Like, just wow amounts of gay.

Her parents had at one point been in a lucrative career until some sort of accident forced them to work paycheck to paycheck.

Luckily that had qualified her for a full scholarship and she was making the most of it.

She’d like to have more, but she’d worked with less.

Of course with those traits who would be a good match for her? Someone kind, genuine, could make her laugh and feel at ease. Although she needed a bit of a stern hand to make sure she stayed on the right path.

Shouting drew her attention to the side where an angry Weiss Schnee was busy yelling at one Ruby Rose, prodigy extraordinaire.

Or so they said. Rumor had it she'd was supposed to be a freshman but had actually tested out of two and a half years of credit and had as a result gotten most of her general studies already completed.

Coco had only exchanged a few words with the girl but she was remarkably kind and genuine. Like the kind of person you were told it was good to emulate that seemed to effortlessly make friends with anyone. Probably why Weiss was her friend when she refused to make others.

Then again Coco had been sure there was, or could be something between them, but trying to ask Weiss had only gotten dry retorts that she was straight.

Coco was pretty sure that was a straight up lie, or she’d just never thought of it before. Straight friends did not look at their gay friends the way Weiss did when she thought nobody was looking at her.

Actually…now that she thought about it. This could be her greatest work yet!

Maybe Weiss just needed a little push to realize things. If it turned out she really was straight then Ruby and Ilia were a cute enough couple, but if she was as gay as Coco’s gaydar was saying…well Ilia had two hands.

Yes, this could be exactly what she needed to make it up to Ilia, and liven up the semester.

She just needed to get their schedules and the work could begin.

“That could work,” Velvet agreed as she gently bit her bottom lip.

Coco wondered if she knew how attractive that look was when she did it? Probably.

“Stop talking out loud and I won’t,” Velvet joked before her face turned serious. “Just promise me none of them get hurt. Ruby is as nice as Pyrrha and doesn’t deserve to get hurt.”

“No, you’re right. I’ll make sure Little Red ends up with a girl that matches her well. Whether that’s just Ilia, Weiss, or both?” Coco shrugged. “We’ll see.”

“You’re the master aren’t you?” Velvet teased. “All of them, or you lose.”

“What do I win though?” Coco asked.

“You’ll find out if you manage it.”

When I manage it,” Coco corrected.

“Mhm,” Velvet said, clearly teasing her.

“Come on babe, do you really think Weiss isn’t at least a little gay for Little Red?”

Velvet merely shook her head not arguing that point. “That doesn’t mean she’ll go for it. What if she doesn’t want to be poly, or let’s Ilia have her to make her happy. Weiss does seem the type to give up what would make her happy. Especially for her one actual friend.”

That…Coco didn’t have an answer to. Mostly because she knew it was true. Damn.

“See,” Velvet countered smugly.

“I can do it. By the end of the semester. There’s a dance. I’ll get ‘em to go as dates to that!” Coco assured Velvet as she snapped her fingers.

Velvet held out her hand for a shake which Coco agreed to without a moment’s notice.

“I’m glad you’re so confident because until I see them kissing each other you’re not getting any kisses from me,” Velvet said.

Coco felt her eyes widen in horror. “Bunbun?”

“I told you about Ilia almost a dozen times but you blew me off. I don’t enjoy being ignored, and Ilia didn’t deserve to feel like she is. Besides it’s helpful motivation,” Velvet explained as she sat back down on the bed.

“C-can it start tomorrow?” Coco tried to fish for anything.

Velvet rolled her eyes. “You can have three used whenever you want, and if I give you any myself they don’t count. I believe in you,” Velvet finished as she fished out her pajamas to change into with a bit of sway to her hips.

The little temptress…

She chanced another look outside at her three targets.

She was Coco Adel. Master Matchmaker! She had this. She HAD to!
