Work Text:

The Death of a Variant.

After the hellacious battle with Kang, Sylvie and the TVA agents were victorious, Mobius and Ravonna aid to the wounded as Sylvie's eyes dart around the ruins of the TVA, its walls reduced to rubble as shards of broken glass lay scattered on the cold, hard ground. “Where is Loki?” Sylvie asks, her mind racing as her body maneuvers through the destruction to find him. Amongst the mess of rubble and decimated tables lays a body, curly black hair and a… “Oh, no.” Sylvie panics, rushing over as she turns over the body, Loki’s body. Tears begin to fall as Sylvie shakes Loki, pleading for him to wake. “Loki… It’s, it’s Sylvie, we won…. LOKI?” She screams, her magic bursting from the ground as the floor begins to tremble, Mobius hears the scream and barrels his way to her side, he audibly gasps as he sees who lays lifeless in her arms, Sylvie cradles Loki’s body, his head pressed tightly against her chest as her hands take his. “Wake up, please….” Sylvie sobs, her tears falling like a rainstorm, a gentle kiss to his forehead, his body is cold.. His eyes, no longer the bright and shimmering blue that she had lost herself in, his eyes were unmoving. The light has gone from his eyes, replaced by any empty void of what Sylvie used to take comfort in. Mobius kneels next to Sylvie, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder, Sylvie visibly flinches, unable to control her grief. She looks to Mobius, her eyes desperately seeking comfort from their friend. Sylvie sees the same heartbreak in the eyes of Mobius. His eyes drop, taking in the image of his only true friend, dead. “Mobius, please.. is there anything we can do to fix this? We-“ Her words are cut short by a burst of sadness and rage as she screams out in anguish, free flowing tears adorn her cheeks, she rests her forehead against the top of Loki’s head, her nose buried deeply in his hair, another gentle kiss. “Is there any way…?” She asks, Mobius sighs, he does not need to hear the rest of the question, he knows the answer albeit, one that will break Sylvie's heart again, and again, he composes himself, a deep exhale, he needs the right words, and she needs them.

“Sylvie…” He begins shakily, fighting back his own tears, wiping away a single teat that escaped. “There’s no way to bring him back… Even if we found a variant who shares some memories, it won’t be him. There is something I do know, though.” Mobius reaches into his pocket, pulling an ornate black dagger with a green centre jewel in the handle. He hands it to Sylvie, who looks confusedly at it, Mobius takes another deep breath. “Before we found you, Loki searched everywhere, every planet in every universe… he found several Variants but, never you. Each time I saw his heart break when he learned the truth, I had never seen Loki more at a loss than when he was without you, Sylvie.” Mobius admits, his voice kind and compassionate, holding back his own grief for her comfort. “We had a job tracking a variant who interfered with the work being done to rebuild Niðavellir after Thanos, as thanks, the dwarves crafted this.” Sylvie grips the dagger, the jewel glowing brightly in her hand. “It was specifically for Loki, and as such, because you were his variant-“ He explains before Sylvie cuts him off.

“It would work for me.” She whispers, Mobius nods slowly.

“It can be summoned to you, like Mjolnir, but in the hands of anybody else, it is just a dagger but…,” Mobius pauses as the jewel glows brighter, “It can be used with your magic, creating duplicates, and even allowing you to draw on the jewel’s energy when you need it. Loki told me that if anything were to happen to him, he would gift it to you.” Mobius looks down at his friend’s body, being held tightly by Sylvie. Her eyes look deep into Loki’s.

“I loved him, Mobius.” Sylvie admits through a choked sob. “Shit, I… I loved him.” Her emotions show freely now, the onslaught of tears never stopping, tears dropping onto Loki’s white shirt, leaving small stains upon it. “I need time alone with him, please.” Sylvie begs desperately, Mobius nods quietly and walks away, Ravonna taking him into her arms in a tearful embrace. His oldest friend allowed him to mourn the death of his closest. “Loki? I don’t know if you can hear me somehow, but I have the dagger you wanted me to have…” Her heart yearns for a breath, one single breath, but it never comes. She pleads to anyone who would listen to allow one more chance to bring him back to her. “Loki.. There is something I need to tell you, okay?” She pauses, a shaking breath before she can continue. “I love you… I will continue to love you forever. Since the day we met, you have been on my mind, I wanted to hate you at first, but I couldn’t. I lied when I told you that love was hate, because… to me, love is you.” She cries, barely able to finish what she had said, Sylvie places one final kiss atop his forehead, gently laying his body on the ground. “I love you, Loki Laufeyson. I always will, I promise. You were the love of my long, long life. I will never forget you. One day, I will see you again… ” Sylvie tearfully walks away.
