Akumatization
This article is about the Paris phenomena. For specific key players, see Hawkmoth (Paris villain), Ladybug (Paris hero), Cat Noir (Paris hero), or List of known Miraculous
One artist's render of what an Akuma may look like, before merging with an object
Akumatization refers to the process by which an akuma transforms a civilian into a superpowered being – complete with costumed accessories and an alias. Akumatized people are typically considered ‘villains’ who are brainwashed into the service of Hawkmoth[1]. The only way to free a person from akumatization is to break the object where the akuma entered[2], and for the akuma to be purified by Ladybug[3]. A person can be akumatized for as short as a few minutes, or as long as several days (citation needed). Akumatized people have reported missing memories during their time brainwashed – due to this, and the fact that property damage is typically undone with the help of Ladybug, any crimes committed by an akumatized person is not punishable by law[4]. Many formerly akumatized people remember having psychic conversations with Hawkmoth.
History
While akumas have only become more well known to the public thanks to social media, it is speculated that people have been akumatized many a times in the past. It is known that akumas are created thanks to the power of the Butterfly miraculous. Ladybug, the holder of the Ladybug miraculous, and Cat Noir, the holder of the Cat miraculous, are frequent targets of akumatized person’s. It is believed this is because Hawkmoth desires their miraculous. In the modern day, akumatization has been geographically limited to Paris. Archeologists speculate that the Ladybug and Cat miraculouses have been used by notable revolutionaries through out history (citation needed).

Last Halloween was probably the scariest in Paris -- instead of dressing up as goblins or werewolves or other monsters,
people dressed up as akumatized villains! It sure made some costume contests extremely difficult to judge,
especially when some contestants went into character.
Many people speculate that an akuma's costume isn't designed by them, but by Hawkmoth, via a psychic connection.

I'm a member of
a network of heroes in The United States
and the superhero activity of the city of Paris has only recently come to my attention.
Despite the social media activity, the akumatization phenomenon
is limited to Paris, and not very well known or understood to those of us outside.
Why? And what can we do to support?

Hi Red Robin,
I'm Alya from the Ladyblog.
We've had foreign superheroes visit us to help with the akuma problem in the past -- including Wonder Woman and Green Lantern! --
but after a couple of them got akumatized, Paris has stopped asking foreign superheroes for aid.
Luckily, we are self sufficient with the comeptency of Ladybug and
various other Miraculous holders who aid from time to time.
Strangely enough, while the akuma problem has deterred foreign aid, it's increased tourism to the city
-- perhaps the thrill of witnessing an akuma attack is more alluring than expected
thanks to social media and Ladybug's success rate.
Just because Paris can handle akuma attacks doesn't mean it isn't a problem
-- our city could really do with developing ways to gain immunity to akumatization, or figuring out who or where Hawkmoth is.
At any rate, if you plan to visit Paris, I advise you do so as a civilian on vacation,
instead of as an official hero! You can follow the guides I posted to the Ladyblog, such as

I can't promise you'll meet Ladybug though.

Hi, I don't know who you are, but I think you've made a mistake.
In response to your previous email: I am not who you think I am, despite what your evidence may suggest.
You do not have a complete picture of what goes on in Paris.
Here's a video of my friends' dress rehearsal for their band Kitty Section, which I also participated in. I come in the video frequently,
adjusting their costumes and taking measurements. I am present through out the video multiple times
before, during, and after the akuma attack, was taking place in Paris 2 days ago. Multiple times through out the video,
Ladybug and Cat Noir can be seen fighting an akuma, while my friends and I took shelter and recorded from the boat.
