Work Text:
Genji grunted as Zenyatta opened up the panel on his forearm. Zenyatta hovered his hands waiting for confirmation that he was okay to proceed. With no other response he began to tinker within the open forearm. Genji watched as Zenyatta began grabbing his tools to work on the delicate wiring. Genji hoped this would be a fast process of just plugging wires back in but by the way he sees his friend look at all damage he has gained from the last battle this would probably not be the case.
"Do we need to learn the lesson of patience again?"
Genji rolled his eyes, "No, I am well aware of the importance of patience and how it is my greatest weapon." He remembers the amount of times he's been taught that one, he probably still has the dents of all the times he's been caught not being patient. His master is a thorough teacher when it comes to his most important lessons. Zenyatta hums as he pulls out a shuriken from his arm, he stared at it seeing how it was broken, "Your injuries show otherwise, you must stop rushing into the enemy without your team, you can only do so much after all". Genji feels a tinge of shame being berated like this. "I know but the light within me calls in the heat of battle and the cyber demon as well!"
"I don't care if your mother told you to rush in, you mustn't go in without proper support." Zenyatta chided as he took out a wire. "Your team looks up to you for guidance if you are lost then they are as well." Genji stares as Zenyatta takes out another wire, he pries his eyes away to stare at him instead. "My team is capable of handling themselves, plus the mission was a success despite my own setback." Zenyatta looks up at them before putting down their tools. Genji stares back at them wondering what Zenyatta will preach to him about the importance of teamwork.
Zenyatta gently held onto Genji's face, admiring the mask that hid away his real face. Or the face that replaced his old self before he came into contact with the cyber demon. He wonders if Zenyatta would've preferred his old face rather than this one. "Please do not mistake my worry Genji, I am glad that the mission was a success and that the team was able to handle it. I simply worry over you and your recklessness as of late." Genji then felt ashamed that he is worrying Zenyatta like this. He gently grabbed Zenyatta's hand that rests on his face leaning into the touch, "My apologies, I am simply…bothered by the cyber demon, it has been too much lately." He doesn't know why he doesn't confide in Zenyatta more with his troubles, he knows he's understanding, he knows him better than anyone else could.
"It wishes to claim more lives, I wish to claim more lives, it does not stop at my enemies and sometimes I begin to think of what would happen if there are no more enemies." Zenyatta shushes him while applying his healing orb onto him. "Let this soothe you and clear your mind." Genji breathes out feeling the healing properties of the orb. "Genji you must remember you are more than your augmentations, more than the light and more than the cyber demon. You are you, you are Genji." Genji felt his heart squeeze at his words. Zenyatta always knew what to say, he always knew how to help him even if he felt he was beyond help. He would be there to pull him back to his senses. To his humanity.
"Thank you Zen, I always appreciate you being there for me." Zenyatta pulled his hands away and grabbed his tools, "I will always be here for you Genji as I know you would for me." Genji misses the touch but he knows they'll soon return once his repairs are done.
"I love you Zen."
"I love you too, Genji. Now please tell me how you managed to jam your shuriken dispenser." Genji laughed, recalling how he was left with no shuriken so he began kicking his enemies away until his team came to his rescue. He wished Zenyatta was there to see it but this was just as good.
