Chapter Text
Kim lounged in the hotel lobby in Vancouver. She was there on a two month business trip, where she was negotiating opening a branch of No-Account Video there. Of course, all expenses had been paid for by her employer. Seeing as it was a particularly nice day, she had decided to go to the beach to kill some time after eating her breakfast.
Once she finished her breakfast, she grabbed her bag, left the hotel and hopped on the bus to English Bay Beach. Putting on her headphones and listening to her iPod, she rested for a few minutes until she arrived. Once she got off the bus, she grabbed an ice cream along the way to keep cool in the heat. Eventually, she arrived at the beach. Noticing a deck chair, she decided to rest and watch the waves crashing. “This is relaxing, I could be here for hours.” she thought to herself.
A few minutes later, however, she noticed a sea lion come crashing onto the beach. Since sea lions don’t normally come to this beach, she decided to keep a safe distance. She was about to call marine rescue until the sea lion took off her fur coat and revealed a human body with bright blue hair. She was a species rarely seen by humans - a selkie!
Kim decided to take a closer look. The selkie didn’t seem too well.
“Who are you? What happened?” Kim said to her.
“I’m… Ramona. I was out in the deep sea hunting for fish when all of a sudden… *sneeze* I became ill and washed up here. Who are you, human?” she muttered.
“I’m Kim Pine. I’ll help you out. I’ll just call marine rescue.” Once she had backed up to a safe distance, she whipped out her phone and dialled the phone number. “Hello? Is this the marine rescue service? Yes, I’ve spotted a sea lion that appears gravely ill. Can you come ASAP?”
Within minutes, a specially-outfitted ambulance pulled up on the beach. A team of marine mammal specialists came out and grabbed a stretcher.
“Stand back, we’ll take care of this.” one of the specialists said.
They put poor Ramona onto the stretcher and loaded her onto the truck.
“Where are you taking her?” Kim asked one of the rescuers.
“To Vancouver Aquaworld. We’ll ensure round-the-clock care for her.” she replied.
On the stretcher, Ramona glanced at Kim, to which she glanced back. Both seemed worried about the whole situation. Kim gave her a wave as the door shut and the ambulance drove off.
She glanced at the sky, wondering how she could help her newfound friend…
