Who would’ve thought the goddess of luck wouldn’t be on Niki’s side today.
Sure it was just an average work shift at the cafe today, nothing extraordinary or awful happened either. There had been far less customers that day due to the weather forecast looking terrible near the late afternoon, with the sky casting awfully dark clouds all day.
And to Niki’s dismay… he had a closing shift.
Now currently he’s sprinting back as fast as he can to his apartment as heavy rain covered the streets and thunder blaring in his ears. The umbrella he had brought with him was definitely not keeping him dry, his long hair looked like a sopping mess as it flew everywhere thanks to the wind, and his work clothes were an utter disaster.
Niki finally reached his apartment, closing the door behind him as fast as he could. “Guh…dear lord I shouldn’t have doubted the news when it said the storm was going to be bad…”
Niki flicked on the light switch… or tried to at least.. it was no good… the storm must’ve taken out the power. “Ah shoot.. looks like i’m not cooking dinner tonight…” He mumbled, very much disappointed.
He took a moment to catch his breath before ringing out his hair and work clothes then changing into much comfier, drier clothing.
“I need to start cooking something for Rinne-kun and I. Ah….. Rinne-kun?” Right… Rinne had to be somewhere in the apartment. It didn’t hit Niki until now just how unusual if was that his way too clingy boyfriend wasn’t waiting for Niki from behind the door like a pet waiting for it’s owner to return home so he could greet him in a bear hug as soon as he could. There was no way Rinne had to be out wasting his or Niki’s money away on pachinko either…. so where was that idiot?
“Rinne-kun? Are you home~?” Niki called out, he began searching the apartment for his boyfriend. I mean how hard could it even be to find him? His loud annoying hyena laugh could be heard from a mile away, his vibrant red hair had always caught the eyes of many, and well he was so tall it made Niki look short.
Yet before Niki made it to his final destination to where Rinne may be, their shared bedroom…. Niki could hear something from inside it he didn’t particularly want to hear, causing his smile to fade into a much concerned frown immediately.
He had heard whimpering, shaky sobs from behind the door.
Opening the door, Niki spotted a Rinne shaped lump on the bed and under the covers.
How could Niki forget? Rinne was always afraid of the sound of thunder ever since he picked him up off the streets. The first time Niki had found this out when they were younger was heart breaking to him, seeing someone so strong and intimidating as Rinne easily shaken up by some thunder was a little silly but nonetheless Niki wanted to be there for Rinne.
“Hey Rinne-kun? I’m home, you okay?” Niki cautiously lifted the blankets to see his boyfriend, being greeted with the sight of a Rinne only Niki has seen. His sharp aquamarine blue eyes were replaced by teary blue orbs and his shit eating grin was no where to be found as he gasped with relief seeing Niki come to his rescue.
“N-Niki! Niki…. Niki..” Rinne quickly pulled the other into a tight hug, resting his head on Niki’s chest.
“I’m here now, okay? You’re safe, honeybun…” Niki cooed, gently combing his hands through Rinne’s messy thick hair. Niki could feel his shirt being stained with tears but that didn’t matter right now.
Niki pulled away from the hug to cup Rinne’s tear stained cheeks, carefully wiping the tears threatening to fall away. Niki smiled, a bright smile that could dry up all the rain.
“I’m sorry i couldn’t get here sooner.. I should’ve known that if there’s a storm, there will surely be thunder as well.” Niki laughed under his breath, it was almost out of guilt.
Rinne shook his head. “Nah It’s okay honeybee, ya didn’t have an option. Ya had work, I understand.. honestly it’s my own fault for being a grown ass man who is still afraid of something so childish like a little thunderstorm..”
“Hey it’s not something you should put yourself down for, you know? A lot of people are scared of thunder even people your age, I promise i’ll always be here for yo-“
Another clap of thunder strikes causing Rinne to yelp and hug onto Niki for dear life as more tears began to drench Niki’s shirt. Though Rinne was practically crushing Niki in his arms, Niki could care less.
He continued to rub circles into his boyfriend’s back, whispering sweet nothings to him and Rinne continued to silently cry in his chest while listening to the rhythm of Niki’s heartbeat.
If Rinne was willing to do whatever it takes to make Niki happy, then Niki will do the same for Rinne.
